WhatsApp is expected to roll out a new voice calling feature on its app, letting customers talk to each other using a VoIP connection. The arrival of this feature was believed to be scheduled for somewhere around March or April, but it seems like the company is already rolling it out to some users.
The first revelation was made on Reddit by a user named pradnesh07, but has since removed the post due to unknown reasons. But he was kind enough to upload screenshots of the said feature, which gives us a better idea of how it will look. There’s even a video uploaded by the user which runs us through the functionality of voice calling on WhatsApp.
Leaked screenshots show that the new version of WhatsApp brings a separate call tab next to the chats icon, letting users place call right within the app. We must stress that this is only being spotted on some devices and there are a lot of users out there who don’t have the feature even with the latest version of the app (v 2.11.508).
It is possible that the developers are sending out the feature to beta testers at the moment, which explains why not everybody is seeing this feature yet. Either way, this is good news and could mean that the feature could be in its final stages of testing.
