Sony Xperia Z1 does not display email texts properly

Problem: Good afternoon. I recently upgraded to KIT KAT and am very happy with the upgrade. The only problem I’m experiencing is that some of my e-mails do not display any text. I have to read the text using my computer. Don’t know if you have any suggestions. Thanks. — Richard

Troubleshooting: Hi Richard. It’s hard to pinpoint the exact cause of your issue to the KitKat upgrade as your case appears to be unique to your device at this point.

We tried checking with other readers by going over their reported issues but we can’t find a similar problem like the one you’re having. The only possible reason for the problem may be due to the email app you’re using. If you are using a third party email app like Gmail or Hotmail, try tweaking their settings to see if they will make any difference. You also want to try re-installing the app to make sure that it runs the most stable version.

However, if you are using the default email app, try to simply reset the phone to its factory settings. Remember, this will delete everything on your phone so make sure to make a copy of your personal files before proceeding. Here are the steps on how to reset your Xperia Z1 to factory defaults:

  • Pull down the notification bar on top of the screen with your finger.
  • Press Settings.
  • Press Backup and reset.
  • Tap Factory data reset.
  • Tap Restore factory default settings.
  • Touch Reset phone.
  • Press Erase everything.
  • Wait for a few seconds while the factory default settings are restored.
  • Read and follow instructions on the display to set up your phone and prepare it for use.

Sony Xperia Z1 cannot access Facebook

Problem: Hello. My name is Zi from Indonesia. I bought my Sony Xperia Z1 5 months ago. Recently, I cannot access Facebook site using my Xperia Z1. I even cannot access FB by google searching. But I can access it with other device. Can you give me solutions about this problem? Thank you. — Zi

Troubleshooting: Hi Zi. There can be a few reasons why a device like your Z1 fails to access a site like Facebook. If this is the only website you are having trouble accessing, try to check with your service provider if Facebook is blocked in their network or in your phone. This suggestion may seem odd but it’s important to check because we don’t want you wasting your time tweaking your phone settings over a network issue you have no control over. After checking with your service provider, you want to proceed checking if any of your phone settings are preventing you from doing so.

Because you did not mention if you are having trouble connecting to Facebook via a browser or app, we will try to cover both in trying to troubleshoot the issue. If you cannot access Facebook through a browser, try clearing the cache and cookies and history. Sometimes, these temporary files known as cache get corrupted and may prevent a user from opening a site. Here are the steps on how to clear the cache and cookies of your Sony Xperia Z1:

  • Go to the Home screen.
  • Tap All applications.
  • Tap Menu.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Tap Privacy.
  • Tap Clear Browsing Data.

These steps also deletes your browsing history so they should cover everything as far as clearing your browser data is concerned. After doing clearing the browser data, try to connect to Facebook again. If that doesn’t work still, try using another browser like Google’s Chrome or Mozilla’s Firefox for Android.

Now, if you are using the Facebook app, try to delete its cache and data to hopefully resolve the issue. While not a sure-fire thing, doing this step is a proven solution most of the time. Keep in mind that clearing an app’s data will wipe out the settings and log-in information so may have to reconfigure it afterwards later on. If you don’t to clear an app’s data, just do the cache first and see if that will work. You can delete the data later on. Here’s how:

  • Go to the Home screen.
  • Touch Applications.
  • Go to Settings and tap it.
  • Scroll to Device and tap Apps.
  • Select from any of the options (Downloaded, Running, and All) to find your preferred app.
  • Tap your Facebook app.
  • Tap Clear data.
  • Tap OK.
  • Tap Clear cache.

If clearing the cache won’t help, you also want to uninstall it, then re-install it later on.

  • Go to the Home screen.
  • Touch Applications.
  • Go to Settings and tap it.
  • Scroll to Device and tap Apps
  • Select from any of the options (Downloaded, Running, and All) to find your preferred app.
  • Tap your Facebook app.
  • Tap Uninstall.
  • Hit OK.

Because we are dealing with a software problem here, your last solution would be to do a factory reset. The steps are discussed above.

Sony Xperia Z1 won’t power on

Problem: I have a Sony Xperia Z1 that is giving me problems. The problems started when the phone did not want to start but would operate when connected to a charger. I think it may have got hot but cannot guarantee that. It was on charge and when I picked the phone up it was very hot. It was suggested that I do a factory reset. Then the phone got worse. When I try to switch it on it starts to the Sony Logo then after 3 seconds goes off.  Touch the on and off button and it comes up with the Sony Logo and repeats. It does not go further than that. Just can’t seem to get past this point. When connected to a charger Sony comes up then Xperia and the colored logo then all off again. Have you any suggestions. Thanks. — Ian

Troubleshooting: Hi Ian. The root cause of the problem appears to be the battery not holding a charge. We hope that the battery is not damaged as this means you have to get a replacement phone either from Sony or your service provider, whichever is more convenient for you. That the phone gets hot when charging it further supports our hunch that we may have a battery problem in our hand. When a red light blinks whenever you try to turn the phone on, it means that the battery does not have enough charge to power your device. Try to charge the phone for over 30 minutes, especially if the battery is totally flat, before turning on the phone.

To identify if the battery is defective or not, we need to do a few things. The first step by pressing and holding the Power and Volume Up buttons at the simultaneously until you feel the three vibrations. After doing so, try to power on the phone the normal way and see if that makes any difference.

If the phone still fails to stay powered on normally, try to do a software repair by using PC Companion. Just click on the link, download and install the application on your computer. Connect your device to your PC using a USB cable, making sure to open PC Companion first and starting Support Zone. Now begin the repair by selecting Software update option then Repair phone. Just follow the instructions on the screen.

If the problem persists, it’s high time to contact Sony or your service provider to get a replacement or have it repaired.

Sony Xperia Z1 touchscreen stops responding

Problem: I replaced the screen on my Sony Xperia Z1. It turns on but doesn’t swipe to open the phone. I followed the steps as far as disassembling the phone just don’t know why the touch screen is not responding. Let me know if you can help. Thank You . — Nicole

Troubleshooting: Hi Nicole. We don’t provide step-by-step instructions on how to fix any hardware issues like disassembling or replacing components. We suggest that you let a professional handle it. If you have access to a local support shop, it’s best if they check your device so as to prevent any further damage on your phone. You may want to also check with Sony if they can cover the issue for you by using the warranty (although we doubt that given that you already tampered with the touchscreen).

There are many websites hosting instructions on how to deal with touchscreen issues on an Xperia Z1 so if you think  that you can handle the technical stuff, just Google it.

Sony Xperia Z1 camera glitch

Problem: Hi. I noticed that my Xperia Z1 camera is not working properly. The phone camera shows many different problems like while taking photos made using flash, they tend to have white hue in right side. I tried to take photos without cover but 80% of them are useless. I showed my phone to a Sony service centre and they said there is software problem. But after upgrading the software, there are no improvements in photo quality and I tried every setting on the phone. The problem was not resolved. Sometimes, when i open the camera app it shows an error that the camera is not available and the image quality is not at all good if we consider that it’s supposed to have 20 megapixels. Do you this a software or a hardware problem? Some photo files are attached below. Please help me in resolving this issue.

Troubleshooting: Hi Gaurav. Has it been like this after you unboxed the phone before? Right now, there is no way for us to know if the camera itself is the problem, or if it a software glitch is involved. If you have been using a third party app like Camera 360 or any other downloadable imaging app, try to see if there are settings that you can change to make a difference. You also want to reinstall the said app to remove a possible bug causing this problem. However, if you are using the default Sony app to access camera, then most probably the issue lies in the hardware. Your best course of action would be to contact Sony or your provider to have the phone repaired or replaced.

Sony Xperia Z1 getting “camera not available” error

Problem: To whom it may concern. I have been experiencing problems for the past month with my Sony Xperia. It was working fine until two weeks ago when I wanted to take a few photos and the camera screen went black and said “camera not available” error. Please advise me on how to solve this problem. — Prudence

Troubleshooting: Hello Prudence. Some readers have reported the same problem before so we can say that this error is not unique to your device. If the camera app fails randomly, chances are, a software bug is causing the problem.

Some users have noticed that when they unlock the phone and start up the camera app by pressing the icon, it usually works fine. The problem seems to surface when trying to use the camera app when the phone is on standby.

Below are solutions that we have gathered from around the web on how to resolve a camera issue on a Z1 caused by a software glitch.

PC Companion. This tool is mentioned above (with a link on how to download it) and is found to be effective in dealing with a camera issue on a Sony device. You need to install this program on your computer first before connecting your phone via USB. Make sure that this application is running before connecting your phone to your computer. Simply follow the on-screen instructions and select your preferred type of action like repair.

Deleting the data and cache. This is one of the commonly suggested troubleshooting step when trying to fix an app problem. Just like PC Companion, the steps on how to delete an app’s cache is provided above. Try deleting the cache first to see if it fixes the problem. You can delete the camera app’s data later on. Keep in mind that deleting an app’s data means you have to reconfigure the app’s settings again, like for the first time. It’s basically like reinstalling an app minus the download part.

Perform a Safe Mode. This solution is usually done if you suspect that a third party application installed on your phone is causing problems. When on Safe Mode, your device is forced to run only the pre-installed apps like the default camera app on your phone. While in this mode, a user can uninstall the suspected app. There are 2 methods on how to perform Safe Mode. The first one involves pressing and holding the Power button until you see the screen asking if you want to Power off the phone, go to Airplane mode, or take a screenshot. Selecting Power Off option will bring you to a screen asking if you want to Reboot to safe mode or not. Just hit OK to confirm it. You’ll know if you are already in Safe mode because there’s a line at the lower left hand side of the screen saying so.

The second method to boot in Safe mode is by turning off the phone and waiting for a few seconds. Afterwards, try pressing and holding the Power and Volume Down buttons and release then once the phone has completed the reboot process. Again, the Safe mode line will be displayed at the lower left hand side of the screen to confirm you are in your desired mode.

Restarting the phone will bring it back to normal mode.

Do a factory reset. Now this is the last solution before we can conclude that there’s an on-going hardware failure on the phone. Always keep in mind that doing this step will erase everything on your phone so make sure that your personal files are safely copied to another storage media or a computer so you can just download them later on to your device. If you want to factory reset the device, just follow the instructions provided above.

Get a replacement. If all the steps mentioned in this post fail, that means that your device encounters a hardware issue. Unfortunately, we don’t recommend that you attempt to fix a hardware problem unless you are confident with your knowledge on electronics. Even so, we don’t provide guides or tips how to repair hardware. It’s better if you let a professional handle the case to prevent further damage on your phone.

Sony Xperia Z1 won’t start after draining the battery overnight

Problem: Hi guys. Please help. Yesterday, I forgot my charger at work so I slept with a low battery phone which later went off. This morning when I get to work, I tried charging the phone but it just doesn’t respond. Can u help me? Thanks. —  Ntokozo

Troubleshooting: Hi Ntokozo. It normally takes 30 minutes to 2 hours to let a battery hold a charge if it’s been left flat out. We believe that the battery may have been drained completely overnight so just leave the phone connected to a charger for 30 minutes before trying to power it on.

It is not advisable to regularly drain the battery to zero because it will shorten its lifespan. However, you can do so once every month to recalibrate it from time to time.

Doing a regular recalibration of your phone’s battery will give it more shelf life.

Sony Xperia Z1 cannot send/receive SMS and make calls in the Philippines

Problem: Can you help me fix a common problem in my Xperia Z1? My phone given by my sister from Japan had been open-lined here in the Philippines. But last week I got confused how to use it since I could not receive/send any messages and call. It keeps on saying “QUEUED FOR SENDING” error. What is “queued for sending”? Troubleshooting: Hi Edith. The error that you are getting is an indicator that your device is having trouble registering to a network for it to send or receive SMS, MMS, and calls. Here are the things that you need to do to get this fixed:

Check the APN settings. The first thing that you need to do is to call your service provider (Smart, Globe, Sun, etc) and ask them how to configure your phone so it becomes compatible with their system. You also want to ask them to verify if your device has correct APN settings. To check the current APN settings yourself, just follow the following steps:

  • Go to Apps.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Tap More.
  • Tap Mobile Networks.
  • Tap Access Point Names.
  • Enter the information provided by your network in the fields that follow. Make sure to enter the details accurately.

Update your phone. This is the next solution that you need to do if changing the APN settings won’t help. Basically, what you need to do here is to go to the official website of Sony and avail of any available and free form of software update.

Use the PC Companion software. Lastly, you want to use PC Companion to try to fix any software or firmware issues on the phone. Instructions on how to access PC Companion are provided in the previous problems.
