S4 Front Camera Not Working

Problem: Hello. My camera stopped working one day and showed the camera failed message I did the factory reset and cleared the cache forced stop and now my camera works but now the front screen camera won’t do anything. It won’t even switch to front camera. It sure would make taking mommy and baby selfies much easier. My newborn is quite a wiggle worm. Could you help me please?? Thanks in advance.

Solution: Is there an error message that is displayed on the screen when you try to switch from the rear camera to the front camera? If no message is displayed and pressing on the camera switch icon does nothing then you should try starting your phone in Safe Mode. Once in Safe Mode try switching the camera again.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key.
  • When ‘Samsung Galaxy S4’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

When in Safe Mode your phone third party apps are disabled. This means that if your front camera works in this mode then the issue may be caused by a certain third party app. Find out what that app is and uninstall it.

If the issue still persists in Safe Mode then you should consider doing another round of factory reset. Make sure to back up your data first.

S4 Widgets/Fonts Not Displaying Properly

Problem: Hi, I have an Samsung Galaxy S4 LTE-4G (GT- 19506). My phone has been updated to android 4.2.2 and I’ve had some problems with my phone. The AccuWeather, S travel and my other widgets go completely black or they disappear most of the times. For fixing it, I either have to restart my device or delete the widget from the page. I thought by resetting the problem will be solved and I’ve rested my phone 3 times but it didn’t change anything. And also, sometimes all the fonts of my pages turn into little white squares and I have no way except restarting my device. I’ve sent email to the seller and they said it might be LCD problem. So I’ve returned it back to kogan and I waited for three weeks. Two days ago I got my fixed phone and I charged it for 24 hours but same things happened again.

Solution: By resetting the phone do you mean a factory reset? If you just performed a soft reset then I suggest doing a factory reset. Make sure to back up your phone data first before proceeding.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key.
  • When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the issue persists then you should consider reflashing the firmware of your phone. You will need the exact firmware version for your phone model and the latest Odin software installed in your computer. Instruction on how to do this are available at most of the popular Android forums online.

S4 Phone Storage Issue

Problem: Good evening sir, I saw your article -How To Fix Common Samsung Galaxy S4 Problems and Errors- online. It’s very informative. But I was not able to find solution to my problem. I am using a samsung galaxy s4 mini. I just bought it. The phone has internal storage of 32Gig and RAM of 1.5Gig. The issue am having with it is that whenever am trying to use camera or receive files it will say “The phone storage does not have enough space.” I was surprised and confused. When I checked the “storage” under “settings” it showed “Total internal storage: 32.00GB.” “Available 31.99GB.” So I don’t know why it is saying not enough space when I still have 31.99GB free in the internal storage. But, I discovered something when I checked under “My Files” it showed “Phone Storage” as “Total Space: 12.15MB” and “Available: 1.7MB.” This shows that truly “The phone storage does not have enough space.” My further check made me to realise that all of my few media are under “My Files” which is a folder inside “RAM”. My problem is that how can I move my files to the “Internal Storage” of 32GB, that is still 31.99GB free. I anticipate your informative response sir. Please try to understand and help me to fix my issue.

Solution: The Galaxy S4 Mini has an internal storage capacity of 8 GB of which 5GB is available for the user. The 32GB storage space you are seeing may come from a microSD card that is inserted in your phone.

If you are getting a “The phone storage does not have enough space” message when taking a picture then you can set the camera to store photos to the Memory Card instead of the Device. To do this just open your camera then click on settings. From settings go to storage location and make the necessary changes.

To free up more internal storage space of your phone you should consider moving your files (music, videos, documents, etc.) to the external storage. Just cut and paste the data using a file explorer program.

S4 Mobile Data Turns Off When Using WhatsApp

Problem: Hi there please help me, when I go into WhatsApp it turns my mobile data of and I have to manually switch it back on. I have a Samsung S4. The problem comes and goes but now it’s persisting. I tried to delete and reinstall WhatsApp, resolved for a few hours only. Tried to take it battery and stuff, so persisting.

Solution: Does this issue only occur when you use WhatsApp? If it does then try clearing the cache and data of your WhatsApp app before uninstalling it.

  • From the home screen, tap Apps.
  • Scroll to and tap Settings.
  • Tap More.
  • Tap Application manager.
  • Swipe left to view the All tab.
  • Scroll to and tap the WhatsApp application.
  • Tap Clear cache.
  • Tap Clear data.

Uninstall the app.

Before downloading the app again from the Google Play Store make sure to check first if your phone is running on the latest software version. Manually check for any updates and if there are any available then install them first.

Once you have checked that your phone is running on the latest software version then download and install WhatsApp.

If the issue persists then wipe your phone cache partition.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key
  • When the phone vibrates, let go of the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  • Press the Power key to select. The phone will automatically restart after the cache is wiped.

S4 SIM Card Not Detected

Problem: Hello, At 11 months old, my  Samsung Galaxy S4 started displaying: sim card not detected….need to restart. I had to restart about five times a day, till it no longer read my sim card. I got a new sim card, but it was still not reading it.  A local phone technician said this is common in the M919 models, and  to replace my sim card reader with one that is made for the i9500 or i9505 models.  I did  replace my sim card reader, twice,  and with both new sim readers it works fine for about 20-30 mins….then it shows sim card removed, unable  to  detect sim ….need to restart.  And when I restart it, it just says sim not detected, now phone is unable to use with texting or calls. When I turn it off for a few minutes and turn it back on, it works fine again for only about 20-30 minutes, then it will show that message again of: Sim removed….unable to detect sim….restart. Any suggestions will help.

Solution: The only thing you haven’t done yet is a factory reset. Try doing it but make sure to backup your phone data first.

If the issue persists then the problem may be hardware related. The SIM controller on the motherboard may be faulty. You should bring your phone to an authorized service center for checking.

S4 Overheating After Lollipop Update

Problem: Hey buddy I’m facing  a great issue of overheating  with my Samsung  galaxy  s4 after  the android  lollipop  update  5.0.1 from the day of update  the phone heats  up a lot even if nothing  is running  and screen  is off what should  I do?

Solution: When a phone overheats it usually means that there is something running in the background. You should first check if the problem is caused by an app or a group of apps syncing by turning off the sync feature. Try also to turn off the Internet (Wi-Fi, mobile data) then observe if your phone still overheats.

Because Lollipop is a new update there may be third party apps that are not yet optimized to run on this software. To check if this is the case try starting your phone in Safe Mode.

If your phone does not overheat in this mode then the issue is most likely caused by a third party app. Find out what that app is and uninstall it. Once you boot your phone normally try to download the latest version of the app that you uninstalled.

S4 Unfortunately S Health Has Stopped Error

Problem: Hi. My s4 has been working fine all day then all of a sudden a message popped up saying unfortunately S Health has stopped. I clicked ok but the message instantly reappeared. My phone is running in the background but because this message is on the screen I can’t use anything as the ok button won’t clear the message. Please advise.

Solution: If you can’t do anything with your phone because the error message keeps popping up then you should first try restarting it.

  • Turn off the phone
  • Take out the battery
  • Press and hold the power button for 3 minutes
  • Reinsert the battery

Before turning on your phone be sure to wipe its cache partition first.

If the issue persists then clear the cache and data of the S Health app.

  • Tap on the Settings icon
  • Touch the More tab.
  • Tap on the Application Manager.
  • Swipe left twice to display contents of the All tab.
  • Scroll to and tap S Health.
  • Tap Force Stop button.
  • Tap Clear Cache button.
  • Tap Clear Data button
  • Tap Uninstall updates

S4 Does Not Turn On

Problem: Hi, 2 days ago, my phone was hovering at about 20% battery, then shut off, and kept looking to restart but wouldn’t bring me to the home screen. It did not have water damage and was working just fine leading up to this. Since then, I have tried pushing all sorts of combinations of buttons to try fixing it according to what online instructions say, but I’ve been unsuccessful. Now, it won’t even turn on. I bought a new battery, thinking there was a problem with the battery that I had, and it seemed to be charging, since the screen turned on for a bit and showed the green power tube filling. However, when I tried to turn on the phone, it vibrated but didn’t turn on, and now the screen is still black. Help? I called AT&T, and they just told me to bring the phone in, but weren’t able to tell me what was wrong with it. I’d like to have some answers before I take it in, which won’t be until Monday.

Solution: Have you tried clearing out your phone RAM?

  • Turn off the phone
  • Take out the battery
  • Take out the microSD (if you have one installed)
  • Press and hold the power button for at least 3 minutes
  • Reinsert the battery (leave the microSD out)
  • Turn on the phone

If your phone does not turn on try connecting it to a different wall charger and let it charge for 15 minutes before turning it on.

If the issue persists then this may already be hardware related issue.

S4 Messaging Not Working

Problem: Hello, my Samsung gs4 recently lost its ability to message. The texting app broke immediately after sending a message with an “‘ !” In the message(‘ !). No other alternative texting app works either. They will either force close as well or just don’t allow to choose contacts. The contact app works and so does calling but messaging is broken. Thanks in advance!

Solution: Clearing the cache and data of your messaging app usually works for this type of issue.

  • From the home screen, tap Apps.
  • Scroll to and tap Settings.
  • Tap More.
  • Tap Application manager.
  • Swipe left to view the All tab.
  • Scroll to and tap the Messages application.
  • Tap Clear cache.
  • Tap Clear data.

If the issue persists then proceed with wiping the cache partition of your phone.

  • Turn off phone
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key
  • When the phone vibrates, let go of the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  • Press the Power key to select. The phone will automatically restart after the cache is wiped.

S4 Audio Stops Playing

Problem: Hello, I recently purchased a second hand Galaxy S4 that had been sent to Samsung for a screen repair after it had been damaged. As a result I do not know when the problem precisely started as I am not sure of the exact age of the phone. I do know that it is either under 1 year old or at most a little more (it was a warranty claim). As I mentioned the phone was fully restored after the manufacturing fix. For me the issue started the day I bought it, Wednesday the 11th of February. I purchased it from the U.S. Cellular store who had had it repaired, so it it had not seen any wear since its return from the repair. The issue itself is mild so I am not overly troubled. I first noticed the issue after putting a music file onto my SD card (and phone). The audio issue in question is that the file will continue to play but the audio cuts out. If I am using headphones I will hear a small electric crack, like a spark. This is followed by a period of silence, ranging from 5 seconds to 1 minute. neither the audio issue nor the small cracking sound are exclusive to headphones. It also occurs via the native speakers. The sound does not immediately work for other audio based applications during this time of silence, either (youtube etc is also silent while the video plays). I cannot tell if the files I moved are corrupted (possible as they are from a ripped cd) or if there is some other issue. I have not tried Bluetooth yet. I have already tried a factory reset as well as battery pulls. I next plan to try removing those files and see if the issue persists. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Solution: Try using the voice recorder app and record at least 3 minutes of audio. If the recorded file plays normally then the issue may be with the music files that you have. If however the issue remains then a factory reset is highly recommended. Just be sure to back up your data before performing this procedure.

S4 Water Damaged

Problem: Hi, my Galaxy S4 got a bath. I took the nine screws out and removed the back and put both pieces in brown rice for almost two days. It does not power on, not even a vibrate, when I try any of the alternate boot techniques. I tried a fully charged battery from another S4 still nothing.  I didn’t buy the insurance. Help.

Solution: Since your phone took a dive in the water its hardware components may have shorted causing the phone not to turn on. The best thing to do in this case is to bring your phone to an authorized service center and have the hardware checked.

S4 Email Not Automatically Syncing

Problem: Hello, I have just purchased Samsung Galaxy S4, and for some reason my emails are not showing in the status bar at the top. The mobile syncs is turned on and I can still receive my emails, but only when I refresh within my email app. I’ve check the sync settings and they are all ticked  as well as notification settings “Notify in status bar when email arrives”, ringtone is selected and vibrate is also ticked. I have also deleted the email account from the phone and then added it again to see if that was the problem, but it wasn’t and still won’t show any incoming emails in my status bar. I’d be grateful if you could help me.

Solution: Try going to Settings > Data usage > Menu and ensure to check Auto-sync data. If it is then your next step is to clear the cache of your email app. It may have some corrupt temporary data that is preventing it from automatically syncing.

  • From the home screen, tap Apps.
  • Scroll to and tap Settings.
  • Tap More.
  • Tap Application manager.
  • Swipe left to view the All tab.
  • Scroll to and tap the Email application.
  • Tap Clear cache.

S4 Emoticons Received Only Showing As Question Mark

Problem: I’ve never had a problem seeing emoticons on my galaxy s4 that other apple users have sent to me in a text message. But yesterday every time someone sends me one it comes across as a ? on my phone. Don’t know if that’s my phone problem or their phone problem but I can’t find a setting or anything to change it. I just know when somebody tries to send me a little emoticon it comes across as a ?. Can you help me?

Solution: The input mode of your messaging app may not be set to automatic. Open your messaging app then tap on the three dots on the upper right side of the app then click on settings. Tap on text message (SMS) settings then go to input mode. Make sure the green dot is on Automatic.

S4 Alarm Widget Deleted

Problem: Hello, I have a galaxy s4 and have a problem with the alarm clock widget that came standard.  I accidently deleted the set widget from my desk top, and now I can’t turn the alarm off or change it. So every day the alarm goes off at 6 am and I can’t find the widget anymore to turn it off.  Can you help me?

Solution:   To get the alarm widget back just long press on any blank space on the home screen of your phone. You will see an option for widgets, click on it and look your alarm widget. Drag the alarm widget to the home screen.

Alternatively, you can also change your phone alarm setting by pressing on the menu and searching for the Clock app. Once you open the Clock app you will see the alarm setting option.

S4 Vibration Not Working

Problem: The vibration on my phone has stopped working randomly. I’ve tried everything to try to fix it but nothing works, is there a solution?

Solution: If you already performed a factory reset on your phone but still can’t make the vibration feature work then the vibration motor may be stuck or faulty. You will have to bring your phone to an authorized service center and have the vibration motor checked.

S4 Calls Contact When Phone Turned Over

Problem: Hi, quick question?  On my phone, Galaxy S4, while I’m texting someone.. like in a text conversation, if I turn my phone over, it will automatically call the person I’m texting? I don’t know if this is a glitch? Or if this is a feature?  If it is a feature, how do I disable it? Thank you! Any advice is appreciated! 🙂

Solution: The lift to dial feature of your phone may be activated. To turn this feature off go to Settings> my device> motions and gestures> motions> direct call (turn this off).

S4 Freezes A Lot After Update

Problem: I have a Samsung galaxy s4 android phone. I have not had any problems with the phone at all until a few months ago I updated the software and ever since then my phone freezes up while I’m trying to text message someone and makes my keyboard randomly disappear and is slow with showing my incoming messages after I open the message thread. Also my phone randomly restarts itself and randomly turns my locations on by its self. All of this started after I updated my software and it aggravates me every day. I would really like to get some answers and hopefully find out what the solution for this problem would be. Please email me back, thanks.

Solution: If this issue occurred right after updating your phone then you will have to do a factory reset. This issue may be caused by data from the previous software version that has not been completely removed and is causing a conflict with the new software version. A factory reset will clear out this old data. Just be sure to back up your personal data before proceeding.
