To our readers who emailed us and asked if Samsung Galaxy S3 would receive Android 5.0 Lollipop, the answer is NO. There won’t be a lollipop update for the phone, at least, not officially. If you want to take the risk, you may download and install custom ROM based on Android 5.0 on your phone but you can’t expect Samsung or your service provider to roll out the update.

This is the 63rd part of our Galaxy S3 problems troubleshooting series. I addressed 10 problems in this post so for those who already emailed us, try to skim through this page to see if your concerns are among ones I addressed here.

Galaxy S3 Can’t Boot Up Completely

Problem: Hello, my Samsung wouldn’t turn on today and I found this: How To Fix A Galaxy S3 That Won’t Turn On [Troubleshooting Guide].

I followed the instructions right up to re-booting. Attached is a picture of the phone after trying to wipe the cache. I don’t know of anyone that has the same phone as I do to try their battery. With the information on the screen of the phone in the picture, are you able to tell me what I should do next.

Troubleshooting: Hi Samantha! Apparently, your phone can boot in recovery mode, so there’s a chance the problem can be fixed. You’ve already tried wiping the cache partition to no avail. The next procedure is to perform a full hard reset, which will delete all data saved in the phone’s internal storage. But the thing is, there’s no guarantee the phone will successfully boot up after doing so.

The error prompt you’re getting (E:failed to mount /cache) means there’s a sector in the phone’s memory that can’t be read and most of the time this is caused by a firmware problem. Re-flashing the firmware will definitely fix this but let’s try to exhaust all possible troubleshooting guides. After all, the tech that may handle your phone will reset it as the first step in knowing what the problem is. Once reset won’t work, he would reflash the firmware, so all your data would still be lost.

  1. Turn the phone off completely.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home, and Power
  3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power button but continue holding the other two until Android System Recovery screen appears.
  4. Use the Volume Down button to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’ and press the Power button to select it.
  5. When finished, use the Volume Down button to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’ and press the Power button to select it.
  6. Still use the Volume Down button to highlight ‘delete all user data’ and press the Power button to select the option.
  7. Once the master reset is finished, highlight ‘reboot system now’ and hit the Power button one more time.

If this procedure failed, let the tech handle the problem for you.

Galaxy S3 Screen Turned White

Problem: I have a question. my Samsung Galaxy S3 was hanging and i wait it for awhile and hope it can works normally but its still hanging, so I dropped off the battery then dropped in again and i try to power it in, but the LCD turned into white blank and just liked it until now. what should i do? what is the solution, please answer. Thank you. — Hegar

Troubleshooting: I was hoping you’d include some information how this problem started. Problems like this just happen out of the blue, there must be a cause. But anyway, the first logical thing to do is to boot the phone in safe mode just to know if it could.

  1. Turn the phone off completely.
  2. Press and hold the Power button.
  3. When the Galaxy S3 screen appears, release the Power button.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume Down key until the phone finished restarting.
  5. “Safe Mode” will be displayed on the lower left corner of the screen.

If it could successfully boot in safe mode, it means there’s a third-party app that caused the problem. Find the app and uninstall it. However, if the screen remained white, then try booting it in recovery mode to find out if the display will still display dark colors–recovery mode has a black background.

  1. Turn the phone off completely.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home, and Power
  3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power button but continue holding the other two until Android System Recovery screen appears.

If the screen stayed white, it’s a hardware issue. You need to have the phone checked by a technician, otherwise, factory reset will save it.

Galaxy S3 Can’t Use Mobile Data

Problem: Hello, I found you on the internet here in Sweden. I have a Samsung Galaxy s3 unlocked from Verizon in the U.S.,

I put in a SIM card for a telephone company here named Telia and it calls out and receives just fine but no data mobile. Why can’t I use the internet? What do I need to do to fix this problem? Thank you so much for any input on the matter. — Wendy

Troubleshooting: Hi Wendy. To be able to connect to the Internet without having to use WiFi, you need to connect to a mobile data network. I am not acquainted with Telia but mobile technology is the same all over the world. That said, you need to have the APN settings provided by your service provider. Call them and ask for the correct one and have the rep walk you through setting it up in your phone. After that, make sure mobile data is enabled and you’re good to go!

Galaxy S3 Randomly Turns On and Off

Problem: My phone has been acting funny all day. it has been starting and turning off all on its own. i have backed it up and restored everything back on it and it seems to work just fine as long as i leave it on the table and use it but the minute i pick it up it starts to glitch. HELP!!!!! This is my only phone as i no longer have a house phone as i cannot afford both. Sincerely, Jamie.

Troubleshooting: Hi Jamie. It seems like the battery is loose or something. So, please secure it. You may insert a small of paper just to keep it in place. Another possibility is that the Power button may have been stuck or damaged. Try pressing it multiple times just to see if it can still be fixed by such a simple procedure. If the problem persists, seek help from a technician.

Galaxy S3 Can’t Send/Receive MMS On Straight Talk Network

Problem: I’ve been dealing with one of the issues covered in part 62 of your troubleshooting guide, “Can’t Send / Receive MMS Under Straight Talk Network” (wich I’ve included at the end of this email) for several months.

The answer you give is exactly what I’ve done to try to fix the problem. I’ve called several times. Customer service claims they cannot help because there are no APN settings on a CDMA network. If you continue to try to get help they make you call back from a different phone to go thru their troubleshooting steps. After that doesn’t work (because they clearly have no idea what the problem is) they claim a tech will call back. They never do.

Do you have any other suggestions to try or things to ask/say to customer service? I appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you, Sam.

Troubleshooting: Hi, Sam! I am sorry to hear Straight Talk reps didn’t exhaust all troubleshooting procedures in a bid to get this problem sorted out. At least, now, you already have an idea how they treat their subscribers. If you want to proceed using their services, try these procedures:

  1. Update Profile (Settings > About Phone/System Updates > Update Profile)
  2. Update PRL (Settings > About Phone/System Updates > Update PRL)
  3. If first two procedures didn’t work, full hard reset (via recovery mode).
  4. Reprovision network services (dial ##72786#).

If all these failed, transfer to another carrier that cares about their subscribers.

Apps Icons Greyed Out on Galaxy S3

Problem: Hey guys. I have an ongoing issue that I don’t know if you have covered before or not. Random app icons don’t appear as they normally would, they appear ghosted. They work fine it’s just their appearance. Some times they all appear normal but as of late, not so much. Thanks for your time. — Scott

Troubleshooting: Hey, Scott! It looks like these apps were moved to the microSD card, which is malfunctioning now. When apps are moved to the SD card, all data will be transferred to the new location and what’s left in the phone’s internal storage are few files including caches and icons. If data are inaccessible, the icon will still be viewed but it’s greyed out. In this case, you need to fix the microSD card first to fix the real problem here. Or, you can simply uninstall these apps via Google Play Store and just re-download them.

Disable Stock Email App on Galaxy S3

Problem: Hi, I use a Samsung S3 and use the gmail app to sync all my email accounts. Everytime I get a email I get a notification from gmail but I also get a notification from the email sync program that came with the phone. Is there a safe way to either delete or disable the email system that came installed on the phone without disabling the gmail app? Thanks for any info you can provide. — Michael

Troubleshooting: Hi Michael. The Gmail app, while developed by Google, isn’t the native Email app in Android. In your Galaxy S3, Email is the default client. You cannot disable it without rooting your phone but you can clear any account you’ve setup for it without compromising Gmail. Follow this procedure:

  1. Go back to the Home screen.
  2. Tap the Menu key. (The key on the left side of the Home button.)
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. Tap on the More tab.
  5. Find and tap Application Manager.
  6. Swipe the screen going to the left until contents of the All tab are displayed.
  7. Scroll to and tap the browser you’re using.
  8. Tap the Clear Cache button.
  9. Tap the Clear Data button, and then OK.

Galaxy S3 Firmware Update Failed

Problem: Hi, so my S3 has just been giving me problems lately. Over a week ago i had to do two factory resets as it just kept giving me an adroid.processs.com error message. Yesterday i woke up to it giving me a clock and google play has stopped error message. I did an master reset last night. I have managed to get it to start working and no error message but now i cannot update software. When i confirm that i have read and accept the terms it starts registering my phone and gives me a process failed message. How can i fix this? Is it fixable at all? Please help. Troubleshooting: Hi Vanessa. The ultimate solution to this problem is to re-flash the firmware, however, there’s always a chance that pulling down the update via Kies and install it on the phone will fix the problem. So, please try that first before you let the tech sort this one out for you.

I don’t know what kind of update you were trying to download but I don’t know of any update available for the S3 as of late. Samsung may have also stopped seeding updates, so it’s possible that the update your phone is seeing has long been removed.

Galaxy S3 Reset After Battery Drained

Problem: Hi, I have a Samsung s3. I was driving and using the GPS on my mobile. After an hour of driving the batter drained completely and my mobile was switched off. When I came back home and recharged my phone, it was up and running but all the data (text, call logs, photos) and downloaded were lost. Even my phone settings were restored to default. Is there a way I can recover it?

Troubleshooting: Yes, there were instances when the phone would run in it defaults after the battery got drained and the most common solution was to just reboot the phone, so please try that. If that failed, then there’s nothing you can do to recover data that were deleted, apps that were uninstalled, or settings that were reset to default.

Galaxy S3 Can’t Detect SIM Card

Problem: Hi, my Galaxy S3 all of a sudden showed a message “Not detecting Sim Card, restart” then my phone would restart. The message would go away and then come back. Now it is on constantly. The phone will work however the message still pops up and the phone will restart by itself. Why is this going on? — Carole

Troubleshooting: If the phone didn’t suffer any liquid or physical damage, then the problem is with the SIM card itself. You need to call your service provider and have the SIM card replaced. However, if the phone had liquid or physical damage, then have it checked by a technician as soon as possible.
