The Google Chromecast has taken the world markets by storm since its arrival back in 2013. We have seen some competitors coming up since then in order to take on Google’s offering. And Qualcomm is the latest to join the fray with its new reference design for a HDMI media dongle.
Known simply as the 4K Streaming Adapter, the chip maker will license the design and technology of the device to manufacturers who are interested in launching a Chromecast like media streaming stick.
It features a Snapdragon 800 chipset inside and also supports LTE broadcast. The ability to stream 4K content could be a massive advantage Qualcomm has over any of the competitors that are available in the market today.
The company hasn’t detailed if there will be any manufacturers supporting the hardware, but we’re guessing there will be quite a few lining up in a matter of months. We expect more details to follow during the MWC 2015 event next month.
