Samsung unveiled the Gear VR in September, based on the Oculus Rift. LG now has its very own head mounted virtual reality headset made specifically for the LG G3 smartphone. LG has worked on this project with Google and has kept it under the wraps for the most part. It is based on the Google Cardboard platform, which was a simplistic virtual reality headset shown off a few months.
The device has slots for the rear buttons and speaker grille as well. The plastic case also has a neodymium ring magnet which can pair with the sensors on the smartphone and let you use it without having to touch the display. This is a cool feature to have on a virtual reality headset.
LG has merely announced this device but has failed to divulge details on pricing or availability. Given that the LG G4 is also on the horizon for sometime later this year, it’s likely that LG will have a special headset for the smartphone too.
Pricing could be crucial for the success of this wearable. And since it’s being developed in partnership with Google, we don’t think it will go too heavy on the customers’ wallets.
As of now, virtual reality headsets have been limited to a handful of devices (mostly Samsung), but it’s good to know that LG is working on something for users of its smartphones.
