Sony was expected to announce the Xperia Z4 flagship at the MWC 2015 event in March. However, new reports are suggesting that Sony might hold off the launch of the smartphone until May this year. Hints of this were dropped by a product placement pitch made by the company’s mobile wing to makers of the upcoming Bond flick. This suggested that Sony’s upcoming flagships will be shown off in May/November respectively.
This is a change from the company’s usual March launch time frame, which also means that they will be missing from this year’s MWC which officially begins in March. This could be a positive for the company as MWC is usually crowded with a lot of new smartphones and Sony’s flagship might not get the attention it deserves.
However, launching a smartphone during a standalone event might make sure the entire world is watching with no other announcements happening at the time. The company is also expected to announce another flagship in time for the release of the Bond film (Spectre) in November. So the company’s strategy of launching two flagship phones in a calendar year hasn’t changed.
