Problem: Hello. Today I started getting a pop-up on my Galaxy S5 that says “connection unavailable”. I can connect to the internet fine but this error pops-up regardless. I click the “OK” button but it keeps coming up for no reason. I have restarted, taken the battery out, cleared all the cache, but the error keeps popping up. I ran my Norton fire movie and it found no malware. I’m attaching a screenshot. Please help! It’s driving me crazy! — Jamie
Troubleshooting: Hi Jamie. This is a generic error when the phone detects that you are trying to access the web either through an app or browser. That it keeps on popping up even when the device is already connected only means one thing– the operating system has been corrupted. As we have mentioned countless times, there are many reasons why an Android operating system messes up and it can be a pain to try to trace its cause. Fortunately, you can skip such tedious process by simply resetting the phone to its factory defaults. You can check how it’s done by following this tutorial.
Samsung Galaxy S5 screen flickers from white to black
Problem: Hi. My name is Kathy. I got a Samsung Galaxy S5 last year around October.
It was working fine for a while and then it began to perform weirdly.
It freezes often, turns itself off majority of the time, and when i try to turn it on 4/5 times, comes up with a fuzzy white screen before going to black. I can hear the screen functioning and the only way to turn it off is to take out the battery and put back in and hope it doesn’t do any of the things I mentioned above.
I’ve gone to mobile tech guys and asked them what their thought on was and they said it was a system faulting and i had to reset my phone to factory and it should perform fine. I had done that and it is still acting up. Could this have been caused by accidentally dropping the phone? Is it internal damage or system error?

Troubleshooting: Hi Kathy. Dropping your phone or any electronic gadget can lead to serious problems. If your S5 was accidentally dropped before, there’s a chance that the reason why the screen cycles between white and black from time to time is a malfunctioning LED or screen. The LED or an S5’s screen assembly is not shock-proof so dropping the phone may have damaged it or some of its components. If you can manage to make the phone work next time, try to access your phone’s service mode by typing the code “*#0*#” (without the quotation marks) on the dial pad. After typing the code, you will see options on what tests to perform. Try to check everything to give you hints if there’s an on-going hardware trouble.
Since you have already tried to factory reset the phone, your next solution here is to call Samsung or your service provider to get a replacement device.
Samsung Galaxy S5 keeps on saying it’s overheating
Problem: Hello. I am having serious problems with my S5. Yesterday it stopped charging, and had a temperature symbol on the screen. It will turn on and tell me that it’s overheating and i can only use the phone and contacts application. I tried rebooting it and nothing happened. It was off all day and it still says it is overheating. Is there anything I can do to fix it? — Jordan
Troubleshooting: Hi Jordan. An overheating phone is usually a sign of an ongoing hardware problem. Most cases of overheating are due to the processor going beyond the temperature threshold it’s supposed to operate in. While there is no official word from Samsung on the maximum heat tolerance of an S5’s processor, anything higher than 70°C is no longer normal and may lead to the phone rebooting itself or showing notifications that it’s overheating.
An S5’s processor or CPU can only handle so much so it’s wise to tone down playing high definition games or multi-tasking if this problem remains. Under normal operation, an S5’s CPU can handle multi-tasking quite handily but if your phone is exposed to direct sunlight or heat source while powered on, it’s heat tolerance may become significantly low. You mentioned that your phone overheated even after it had been shut down for a day. That’s not normal.
If you are not the type who plays loads of HD games, uses mobile hotspot, and let the phone perform other resource-hungry tasks all at the same time, then it’s safe to say that something’s up with the hardware.
Malware or rogue apps can sometimes cause the phone to overheat by forcing it to run things in the background at a stretch so you may want to reset the phone to factory defaults first. This ensures that no possible software cause is the culprit.
If resetting the phone to its defaults won’t help, please call your service provider or Samsung and secure a replacement.
Questions about Samsung Galaxy S5 battery
Problem: Hi guys. I read your posts regularly and really like them. You are doing a wonderful job here helping people do tech stuff at home so they don’t have to rush to a technician and pay couple of hundreds for nitty gritty stuff. I have some questions that are pestering me for a couple of months now. It seems like my Samsung Galaxy S5’s battery is not working at its 100%. Is there a software to check this like windows have CMD command “powercfg -energy” which gives battery’s original and current capacity.
Also, I bought my phone in May 2014 and now I’m in Jan 2015 so will my warranty cover this replacement (I’m in Toronto, Canada)? Believe me when I say that I’ve checked for all the other stuff like bad app or phone reset or switching off all functions and all. My battery barely lasts 5 hours. I tried calling Samsung customer desk. Firstly, the walk in service center is too far from my place, and next, they say that they will check the phone and stuff even when I told them everything else is fine and I just need a replacement battery.
Also, please enlighten on how to first charge the battery when we purchase a new phone and also how to take care of battery after that.

Troubleshooting: Hi Shomil. It’s no secret that the battery of a Samsung Galaxy S5, just like any other battery being used by power-hungry smartphones, can only give less than a day’s worth of power. And that’s already an overstatement. Depending on how one uses the device, the battery may last between a couple of hours to less than 12 hours. Samsung’s official endorsement gives the phone’s battery endurance of 21 hours if used for calls only. But with today’s normal user routine, a powerful smartphone like your S5 is way more powerful than to be used simply for receiving or making calls. We don’t know your usage pattern but if you don’t use the device for games or constant internet connection, the battery should give you more juice than 5 hours.
Regarding your questions, we will deal with them point by point.
Software or battery app. There are many free excellent battery apps in Google Play Store that gives you information about the performance of your battery. We recommend that you pick one app for a day and see how it fits your need. Each app offers different support and detail so you want to check as many as possible so you’ll have an idea on which one is more suitable for you. We know that the top apps in this category includes Battery Doctor, Green Power, and Juice Defender but there are still many similar apps that you can download handily.
Samsung Galaxy S5 Battery warranty. An original Samsung battery bundled with your S5 is considered an integral part of the device so the one-year standard warranty should apply. As far as we know, all S5 from service carriers have a 1-year warranty in them so you can either call Samsung or your service provider about it. This applies to all S5’s in North America so we believe you can have the battery replaced for free as long as you can convince them that it’s not working properly at this time.
How to calibrate a Samsung Galaxy S5 battery. A Samsung battery is usually charged partially when you first open it so the best thing to do is to drain it before recalibrating it with your phone. To recalibrate the battery, just to the following:
- Drain the battery by using the phone until it shuts down completely. Try to turn on the phone again to double check if you have indeed drain the battery completely.
- Remove the battery from the phone, wait for a minute, then put it back on.
- Charge the battery while the phone is off. Make sure not to leave the phone charged overnight. Depending on your charger, charge time may take up to 3 hours or longer.

Samsung Galaxy S5 won’t power on after interrupting app installation
Problem: Hi there! I accidentally touched the install button to download software and to stop it, I removed the battery. Now my phone will not switch on. How can I correct this? Thank you. — Beth
Troubleshooting: Hi Beth. It’s never a good idea to interrupt a device when it’s trying to access its memory or write something on it during installation. Doing such usually leads to a corrupt operating software or memory errors. We believe this is what has happened to your phone.
Try to bring your phone in Recovery mode. This is a method to update the flash file system in your phone, recover, delete data, or provide more information about a device. Recovery mode, like factory reset, lets you wipe data or perform system updates. In your case, what you want to do now is to determine if the phone will boot up normally so you can delete the existing cache partition, which may be damaged.
Here are the steps on how to perform recovery mode in your S5:
- Turn off your S5.
- In order to shut down your Galaxy S5 you can either press the power button and select “power off” or you can press and hold the power key for more than 10 seconds.
- Wait a few seconds and then proceed to the steps below.
- Press Power, Volume Up and Home buttons at the same time, simultaneously.
- Keep pressing these keys until recovery mode is being displayed on your Galaxy S5.
- In recovery mode, use volume up and down buttons in order to scroll up and down; also use power button in order to select your option. In your case, you want to select the option that says Wipe data partition.
- You can then reboot into Android by selecting Reboot System Now.
If your phone will still not power on normally after deleting, bring the phone again to Recovery mode and select Wipe data/factory reset. This step is meant to wipe the phone clean forcing it to run the default operating system it was given when it left the factory. This will erase all your personal data so if you are unable to find a way to save them before doing a factory reset, there’s a big chance that you may no longer have access to them afterwards. Pictures, files, and videos saved in cloud services like Dropbox can still be recovered once your phone starts to work normally.
How to change Samsung Galaxy S5 system font color
Problem: Hi. I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 Model SM-G900V on the Verizon network. I am trying to find a way to change the default font color on the phone. The color is white and I have a few apps that I cannot read the text because the text is the same color as the background. I checked with Verizon with no luck and with Samsung with no help either. Is there an app that I can download to change the color of the font or a workaround that you are aware of to fix this issue. Thank you. — Paul
Troubleshooting: Hi Paul. The only way to change an S5’s system font, which means the font will persist across all functions, menus, and apps, is by selecting pre-installed fonts Settings > Display (located under Sound and Display) > Font. Unfortunately, there is no option to change the color of the system font itself.
You can also download additional fonts but they normally follow the default white color.
We are not aware if there font packages that will allow you to pick other font colors but you can give it a try by downloading fonts you like from Samsung App store. Be aware that downloading fonts may require you to pay for them (prices vary from $1-$4).
If you have an unreadable app because its background is in white, try to contact the app’s developer and tell them about the issue. That way, you are also helping other users who encounter the same problem. You will normally find the contact details of an app developer in Google Play Store app page.
Hotmail email not working properly on Samsung Galaxy S5
Problem: Hi. Not sure if you can help with this but i have a lot of trouble with my Samsung emails. It will not download them unless in Wi-Fi. And even then, I have a lot of trouble or have to manually do it. At the moment they haven’t downloaded for a few days and constantly says ‘checking account’. It has a lot of trouble loading old emails as well. It is with a Hotmail account. I have turned ‘automatically download attachments in Wi-Fi’ on and off many times. I have changed all the sync settings many times. Getting so frustrated! Thank you. — Kylie-Anne
Troubleshooting: Hello there Kylie-Anne. An issue like you have usually boils down to the app’s failure to perform its function normally because it or its cache has been corrupted. The first thing that you need to try here is to delete the app’s cache. Here’s how:
- Go to Settings.
- Open Application Manager.
- Search the app under All tab.
- Tap on the desired app.
- Select Force Stop, Clear Cache, and Clear Data options. Make sure to press the buttons in this order.
- Restart the phone and open the email app as normal.
Clear Data is the same as re-installing your app so choosing this over re-installation is a more efficient way. However, selecting Clear Data also means you are erasing your emails, profiles, and all other files associated with the app. Simply reconfigure your email in the app and you should be good to go.
Samsung Galaxy S5 screen problem
Problem: About 3 months ago I had my screen replaced. Over the weekend while I was listening to music on my way to work, everything seemed to be fine, but after work I pulled my phone out, the screen wouldn’t turn on and the capacitive buttons on the bottom don’t light up. When I plug it in, the red led indicator comes on and when I plug my headphones in and push play music, it plays just fine. The screen is slightly cracked in the top corner, but has been like that without a problem for a while. I can’t figure out what’s going on. — Robert
Troubleshooting: Hi Robert. The components inside your S5 are packed so tightly inside that even a hairline crack in the motherboard can potentially cause errors. If the phone has been dropped or hit by blunt force before, there’s a big chance that some of the components may no longer be as firmly soldered in place as before. Plugging in and out your headset be causing stress on the motherboard resulting to random errors on the screen. As we don’t recommend any hardware fixes on this site nor provide details how to open to check, repair, and replace phone components, it’s best if you allow the pros to handle this problem. If the phone is still covered by a warranty, it’s best if you can get a replacement for it.
A Samsung Galaxy S5 is usually covered by a one-year warranty. Try to call Samsung or your service provider and see if you can secure another unit.
Unable to log-in to Instagram using Samsung Galaxy S5
Problem: Hi there. I have been having an issue with trying to log onto Instagram with my new S5. Initially the phone allowed me to log on without a problem. Then it started telling me incorrect username/password. I know the password is correct as I save it onto my clipboard and paste it where it asks for the password. I have done this all the time with my S3.
This is what i have done so far:
- I logged on with a friends Galaxy S4, using the same user name and password, and it logged on without a hitch.
- I have changed my password several times (all different passwords each time)
- Uninstalled and re installed Instagram several times
- I have gone onto the Instagram website and log on without complications
- The only way I can log on is via Facebook. (which is a hassle as I have two Instagram accounts. Facebook only lets me log onto one of these accounts)
I assumed that if the fault were with Instagram, I shouldn’t have been able to log in on line or with a friends phone.
Have you had any queries like this before? i have been online trying to find solutions and I cannot find one! Or I am just told to uninstall and re-install (as I previously mentioned, i have done this several times without luck).
I sincerely hope you can help in anyway. I use Instagram as a marketing platform for my businesses and I am getting increasingly frustrated. Kind regards. — Deane
Troubleshooting: Hi Deane. This is actually the first time we heard of any Instagram sign-in issues. A search on the web regarding this problem yielded no similar hits so it must be a unique problem happening to your phone. Instagram’s signing-in process may have been changed by Facebook after it was acquired, requiring users to associate their Facebook account to only one Instagram account as well. If the existing signed-in Facebook account in your phone is already associated to another Instagram account, then this is probably the reason why you are unable to sign-in to a second Instagram account. Try to log-out your Facebook account first using the Facebook app and see if you can sign-in to Instagram. If you cannot, that means that you need to have another Facebook account so you can log-in to your second Instagram account.
