Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Problems, Questions, Errors and Solutions [Part 43]

Welcome to the 43rd part in our series of troubleshooting articles dedicated to the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. We’ve been getting quite a lot of emails from our readers lately regarding this particular model which is quite a surprise since this is a 2012 model and Samsung has already released the Note 4. In terms of hardware specs, this phone is still very capable and can even surpass some of the new mid-range models out in the market today. The planned Lollipop software update will breathe new life to this device and will make it more attractive to its owners.

Note 2 Unlocking Procedure

Problem: Hi, I just bought a second hand galaxy Note II that’s locked to the Rogers network and running 4.4.2. I’m having a hell of a time trying to unlock it so I can use my Virgin sim card with it. Any advice?

Solution: You should test if the method listed below still works.

  • Insert the desired SIM card you want to use unlocked into your device, and restart the phone.
  • Enter the code *#197328640# into the keypad and press send.
  • Go to Main Menu -> [1] UMTS -> [1] Debug Screen -> [8] Phone Control -> [6] Network Lock -> Options [3] Perso SHA256 OFF (after choosing this option, wait for at least 30 seconds)
  • Go back one step by pressing the Menu button, select back, which should bring you to [6] Network Lock, then choose [4] NW Lock NV Data INITIALLIZ.

If that procedure still works then your phone should now be working with your new SIM.

If it doesn’t work then you might want to buy an unlock code for your device. There are several websites online that offer this service. Once you get the unlock code you just have to input it in your phone to instantly use it on another network.

Note 2 Backup Error

Problem: Hi there tdg, I have a Galaxy Note 2 GT -N7100 which I have auto done all software upgrades. But just lately I have been getting a notification message saying ‘failed to backup an unknown error has occurred’ there is a pic of a cloud in notifications. I have scoured the web to find the answer and I came across ur magnificent site. I’m not a techy person but can use the Internet and phone successfully. I see on some site it mentions Kies, do I HAVE to backup to my Mac? As I have never had to do this before and this is the first time I have ever received this unknown error message. It’s difficult as usually they give codes or numbers so you techy guys can see the number and that helps with rectifying the problem, but when it just says an unknown error has occurred, how is the lil ole lady supposed to know how to fix the problem. I just keep getting the cloud pic on my notifications on the note 2. Please could you tell me what the remedy could please?

Solution: The picture of the cloud in your notifications means that there is a problem synchronizing the data of your phone to an online storage service. The first thing to check is whether your phone has a stable Wi-Fi connection. If the connection is spotty then the sync process may be interrupted resulting in the error message. You should try connecting to another Wi-Fi network and see if the error message still occurs.

If after connecting to a different Wi-Fi network the issue still persists then the next thing to do is to wipe the cache partition of your phone. This process clears out the temporary data in your device which may be causing the problem. This does not delete any of your data such as photos, videos, or messages.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key
  • When ‘GALAXY Note II’ appears on the screen, let go of the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  • Press the Power key to select and wipe the cache.
  • With ‘reboot system now’ highlighted, press the Power key to restart the device.

It is also possible that the remote online storage service is down making it impossible to perform any backups.

One other way to perform a backup is by using a software called Kies. This allows you to save your phone data to your Mac. All you need to do is download and install the software to your Mac. The software is quite intuitive and has onscreen instructions on how to perform a backup.

Note 2 Can’t Type On Google Search Bar

Problem: My note 2 suddenly stop allowing me to type text into my Google search bar on my home page.

Solution: Restarting your phone usually resolves this type of issue.

  • Turn off your phone
  • Remove the battery
  • Press and hold the power button for at least 3 minutes
  • Reinsert the battery
  • Turn on your phone.

If the issue persists then try clearing the cache of the Google Search app.

  • From the home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  • Tap Settings.
  • On the More tab, tap Application manager.
  • Tap the All tab.
  • Scroll to and tap the Google Search application.
  • Tap Clear cache.
  • The application cache is now cleared.

Note 2 Does Not Boot

Problem: I am having difficulties with my Samsung Note 2. All the sudden it wouldn’t light up when I tried to get in my phone or it would just freeze a lot… Then this morning had to take the battery out and when I put it back in it would only show the black screen with the Samsung Note 2 on it… Well then after doing that it won’t come on at all now. I don’t know what happened over the past 2 days. But it’s just dead now!! Please please help me?? Thank you very much for your time! 😉

Solution: Most cases the concerns a phone that does not boot up are usually caused by a glitch in the software. Follow the troubleshooting steps listed below to resolve the issue. Proceed to the next steps if the issue still persists.

Reboot your phone

  • Turn off your phone
  • Take out the battery and microSD card (if you have one installed)
  • Press and hold the power button for at least 3 minutes
  • Reinsert the battery (leave the microSD out)
  • Turn on your phone.

If your phone turns on normally then you can reinsert the microSD card.

Wipe your phone cache partition

Do a factory reset (Make sure you have previously backed up your phone data)

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key.
  • When ‘GALAXY Note II’ appears on the screen, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘delete all user data.’
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to turn the restart the device.

If the issue still persist at this point then you should try using Kies and perform an emergency firmware recovery on your phone.

Note 2 Takes Too Long to Boot

Problem: When my Samsung note 2 N7100 turned off it will take long before it starts more than three minutes please help.

Solution: It’s possible that this issue may be caused by too much temporary data stored in your phone. You should try wiping the cache partition of your phone and see if this resolves the issue.

If the issue persists try starting your phone in Safe Mode. What you want to do this time is to determine if a certain app is slowing your phone down. In this mode, only the default apps are loaded while any third party app you installed from the Google Play Store are disabled.

  • Turn off the Galaxy Note 2 by pressing the Power button (positioned in the right edge of the device). Tap Power Off from the choices that will appear followed by OK.
  • Once the device successfully shuts down, press the Power button again, but this time, keep your finger pressed on it together with the Volume Down button.
  • Let go of the Power button when you see the Samsung Galaxy Note II logo but do not let go of the Volume Down key yet.
  • After that, you will see a status message telling you that your Galaxy Note 2 is now in Safe Mode. Let go of the Volume Down key and tap the OK button.

If the phone boots faster in Safe mode then a certain third party application that you installed in your phone may be the cause of the problem. Find out what that app is and uninstall it.

Another thing to consider is a faulty SD card. Try taking out the SD card and check if your phone boots faster.

Note 2 Water Damaged

Problem: hello, I’m having some phone issues I’m hoping you can help me with . I dropped my phone in a toilet last night. I took it out in less than 5 seconds. However it was wet inside. I took it apart dried off phone and battery and took out both cards. I put the phone battery and cards in rice overnight. I put phone back together in the morning and it seemed to be working fine. But when I went to charge it now it’s giving me these messages like battery disconnected and charging paused, battery temperature too low. I looked up some trouble shooting and several advised to drop the phone from one foot. I did this and now the battery percentage went from 8% to 54 %.but it is declining rapidly .and the messages are still popping up. Could the battery be damaged from the water? If I replace the battery should the phone be alright?

Solution: I’m not sure if dropping your phone will help. In fact, it may even add more damage to the device.

Regarding the charging issue you should definitely try getting a new battery. There is a possibility that your battery may have gone faulty due to water contact.

If the issue persists even if you are already using a new battery then you should have your phone checked at an authorized service center. The water may have affected some internal circuit in your phone which needs a closer inspection.

Note 2 Washed Out Screen Color

Problem: Mr. Roid guy, two or three days ago I was making some adjustments to my above cell phone. I have no idea how I did it but since then my Home wall paper color looks washed out, almost exactly like a film negative. The rest of the screens (All of them) are a changed color. They look as if the phones “Theme” has been changed. I’ve searched for several days looking at every menu choice (I think), no joy. Aside from that the phone seems to work just fine. I would appreciate it if you could give me guidance on this problem. I’ve had no luck. Looking on line to resolve this. Regards.

Solution: Since you mentioned that this issue occurred when you made some adjustments on your phone then this is most likely just a settings issue.

To bring back the old color scheme follow the steps listed below

  • Go to Settings.
  • Select Accessibility.
  • Switch off Negative Colors using the switch.

Note 2 Not Charging/Does Not Boot

Problem: I was in the hospital and was charging my Note 2 on the bedside table. A nurse moved the table and the phone fell to the floor. Now it won’t boot up; the battery will not take a charge. Your Samsung rep at the Best Buy / Samsung kiosk said I needed a new battery, which I bought. Thee phone worked fine until the battery ran out.  Now it is black again. What can I do? Thank you.

Solution: First, check the charging port of your phone and the charger and see if there are any physical defects. Try using a different wall charger and check if your phone charges normally. If it does then your old charger is defective.

If after using another charger your phone still does not charge then you should have it checked at an authorized service center. The drop may have damaged a component inside your phone that is responsible for charging the battery.

Note 2 Accelerometer/Rotate Not Working

Problem: Hey guys! I just saw your great Note 2 Q&A (http://thedroidguy.com/2015/01/samsung-galaxy-note-2-problems-questions-errors-solutions-part-41-2-101485) and thought I’d ask my own question, if you don’t mind. My accelerometer/rotate screen hasn’t worked for about a month now. The screen won’t rotate (even when rotate screen is activated), and apps that rely on screen tilt are useless (as well as viewing photos in widescreen, etc.). Any idea how to fix this, or if it is even possible to? Thanks!

Solution: If this is a software related issue then a factory reset may solve the problem. Make sure to backup your data first before performing this procedure.

If the problem still persists even after performing a factory reset then there may be a problem with the sensor of your phone. You will have to bring your phone to an authorized service center for checking.

Note 2 Keyboard Layout Question

Problem: Hi, I find your help line fantastic. I have a small matter of dissatisfaction which you may be able to help me with. I think it was after a Samsung update that my keyboard layout changed. It was a minor thing; the comma beside the space bar was removed. The comma needs to be accessed via the symbol keyboard. My usage of the comma is high enough to send me searching for a comparable Swype keyboard. I have found the Swype Dragon trial to be good, but it is a time limited version. Is there some way of returning the comma to the main keyboard? Thank.

Solution: The latest software update for this phone brought many changes to the device and one of which is that of keyboard layout. Right now, there is no way for the comma to be placed beside the space bar for the stock keyboard. Your best option is to use third party keyboards to remedy this. Swiftkey is one such keyboard available at the Google Play Store that has its comma positioned beside the spacebar. This app can be downloaded for free.

Note 2 Screen Too Sensitive

Problem: Hi guy, I’ve had a Note 2 for two years now, and am constantly annoyed at how difficult it is to create text input for this device. The screen appears to be too sensitive to finger touch, and the note stylus is not accurate on the screen.  It’s also too sensitive! Do you know of any way to correct either of these deficiencies of the Note 2?  I use the Swype + Dragon keyboard input as the best input app so far of all of the readily available options. Maybe you know something else that works. Thanks.

Solution: Does your phone have a screen protector installed? If your phone has one then it may interfere with the way you interact with your phone. Try taking it out and see if the touch sensitivity improves.

If you the screen sensitivity issue still persists then you should consider doing a factory reset on your phone to eliminate any software related causes. Make sure to backup your data first before proceeding.

If the issue persists even after a factory reset then there must be something wrong with your phone digitizer. Bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.

Note 2 Not Recognizing SIM Card

Problem: Hi I got a note 2 love it. Dropped it got a new one and it will not read my sim card so got another one will not  read my sim so what’s up with that?

Solution: The SIM card you are using may be faulty. Try using another SIM card on your phone and see if it gets recognized. If it does get recognized then it’s time to replace your SIM.

Note 2 Does Not Recognize Touch Input

Problem: I just recently purchased a note 2 from craigs list.. the glass part of the screen was missing but had a replacement. . We got it put on for some reason the phone does not recognize your finger but the s pen works just fine. . Is this gonna cost a lot to fix or is it a simple fix… I love the phone otherwise just gets a little annoying having to use the pen all the time. Thanks.

Solution: If your phone can recognize the S Pen but won’t recognize your fingers then the most likely cause is the digitizer. Try to check if the digitizer cables are properly connected. If they are then you may have to replace this component.

Note 2 Update Question

Problem: Hi guys!! Me stepdaughter has a Note 2 that I had bought for her mother. It was bought used and the seller explained that all that had been done is that the carriers bloteware had been removed. I believe it is rooted but have not run any tests. The phone will not update. It is still on 4.1. I have been recommended to flash the ROM with Odin. I downloaded Odin and found the ROM (Claro PR) for the phone that will update it to 4.4! I have rooted and installed ROMS on my own phones before but still consider myself a noob. According to my observations it is a straightforward process and the only issue would be that she would have to start from zero because doing this will bring the phone to stock and erase everything on it. What would you do? Thanks.

Solution: Android 4.4 brings with it a lot of features and benefits for this 2 year old phone. You will definitely want to bring your phone back to stock since Samsung has already planned a Lollipop update for this device. Since you already have the necessary tools and experience in installing ROMs then I suggest you continue with your plan of flashing the Claro PR ROM.

Note 2 Can’t Connect To 4G

Problem: I seen your Galaxy Note 2 trouble shooting guide on the drip and was hoping you can help. I have Sprint service and I can never connect to 4g. It started when I got my phone back from Samsung. My lcd screen had to be replaced. I tried everything. Samsung says it’s Sprint and Sprint says it’s Samsung issue. When I boot up I get this error message. Unable to establish wireless data connection.

Solution: First, make sure that your network has sufficient 4G coverage in your area.

Next, make sure that you have enabled the 4G setting of your phone.

  • From the home screen, tap Apps.
  • Scroll to and tap Settings.
  • From the Connections tab, tap More network
  • Tap Mobile networks.
  • Tap Network mode.
  • Tap the desired option. Selecting LTE/CDMA auto-enables 4G LTE when available.
  • Tap OK to apply the new setting. The device will reboot.

Finally, make sure that your phone has the correct APN settings.

  • Tap the Apps icon
  • Tap Settings
  • Tap More Settings
  • Tap Mobile Networks
  • Tap Access Point Names

Verify if you have the following settings. Make the necessary changes if there are any differences.

  • Name: Sprint
  • APN: cinet.spcs
  • Proxy: blank
  • Username: blank
  • Password: blank
  • Server: blank
  • MMSC: http://mms.sprintpcs.com/servlets/mms
  • MMS Proxy: 68.28.31.7 6
  • MMS Port: 80
  • MMC: 234
  • MNC: 15
  • Authentication type: not set
  • APN Type: internet + mms
  • APN Protocol: IPv4
  • APN enable/disable: blank

If the issue still persists then you should bring your phone to an authorized service center for checking.
