S4 Acting On Its Own

Problem: Hello, I have Samsung galaxy s4 active I have been using is it for about a year and half now . my phone was very ok  the first year but it start to have a lot of problem after that the phone is freezing and the space bar is typing any word  when I press the button to make space  .sometimes it is opening any application and closing …. and taking a picture and send to any one on the contact weird ha?  I am afraid to give to the service . maybe they will touch the hard ware and damage it more .how can I know if this is some kind of software problem or the hard ware problem.

Solution: This issue could either be software related (caused by certain apps or the system software itself) or it could be a hardware related problem. The fastest way to check if this is a software related issue is to perform a factory reset of your phone.  This brings it back to its original condition when it was new. Before performing this procedure you should backup your data first as this will be deleted in the process.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key.
  • When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the issue still persists at this point then it’s most likely caused by a faulty hardware component. You should bring your phone to an authorized service center for checking.

S4 Unresponsive Keys

Problem: Hello. Recently my s4 soft keys stopped working properly. They`ll work fine and suddenly won’t respond. If I lock my phone and unlock they`ll respond again and after a while unresponsive. Can you please tell what the problem is?

Solution: This issue might either be caused by corrupt temporary data or third party apps installed in your phone.

To check if it is caused by a corrupt temporary data you should wipe the cache partition of your phone. Your personal data will not be deleted in this process.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key
  • When the phone vibrates, let go of the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  • Press the Power key to select. The phone will automatically restart after the cache is wiped.

If the issue still persists then the next move is to check if certain third party apps are causing this problem. You can do this by starting your phone in Safe Mode. Only the default apps are loaded in this mode while those apps you downloaded from the Google Play Store are disabled.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key.
  • When ‘Samsung Galaxy S4’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

If the issue does not occur in this mode then its most likely caused by an app you installed. You should find out what that app is and uninstall it.

S4 Not Receiving Emails

Problem: My email on my s4 is not receiving any new mail. My refresh button keeps going around in circles. How can I correct this?

Solution: There are two things that can cause this issue assuming that all of your email settings are correct and that you have previously received emails using the app. The first is the Internet connection and the second is the email app itself. Before proceeding with the troubleshooting process try restarting your phone first as this may help resolve the issue.

To check for Internet related concerns you should try switching between modes of connection. If you are using a Wi-Fi connection try switching to your mobile data connection and vice versa. If you can receive emails with the second mode of connection then your first connection has a problem.

If this is an app related issue then I suggest clearing the cache of your email app.

  • From the home screen, tap Apps.
  • Scroll to and tap Settings.
  • Tap More.
  • Tap Application manager.
  • Swipe left to view the All tab.
  • Scroll to and tap the Email application.
  • Tap Clear cache.
  • You’ve now cleared the application cache.

S4 Signal Loss

Problem: Hi, I recently purchased an unlocked S4. I had an O2 contract sim in for a while and have now changed to giffgaff. The phone generally works fine however numerous times during the day it will lose signal. I still receive calls and texts whilst it’s showing a circle with a line through it instead of signal. If I try to make a call it shows Not Registered On Network. This happened before I changed sim so I know it’s not the sim card. I’ve tried to search for an update but the phone is up to date. I can get the signal back by switching to flight mode briefly but as you can understand this is a bit of a pain. Any help will be much appreciated.

Solution: In issues like this where the network signal returns after activating/deactivating flight mode the most probable cause is a software glitch. Have you tried doing a factory reset on your phone? This brings your phone back to its original condition when it was new. Just make sure to backup your data before performing this procedure.

If the issue still exists after a factory reset then this may be caused by a faulty hardware component. You will have to bring your phone to an authorized service center for checking.

S4 Freezes When Inactive

Problem: Hey Droid Guy, I am experiencing several issues with my phone; all of which may be stimulating from one problem. Here’s a run down: My phone spontaneously stops playing music and playing videos when it’s not active for a few minutes. The speaker I assume works fine because after I restart it everything is functioning the way it should. However after a few minutes it kicks back out. A prompt came up before in the past and often, now not so much. I can’t hear when calls are coming through either because of the speaker. Videos slow down and sometimes don’t play at all after the speaker has been inactive also. The sound is still a factor with all the media processes, it even freezes up and restarts at times. I have also tried a factory reset, but to no avail. Can you assist me? I would greatly appreciate it.

Solution: Have you tried checking if there are any new software update available for your phone? These updates come with improvements and bug fixes that may help resolve this issue.

Since you already performed a factory reset on your phone to no avail then this may already be a hardware related issue. Have you dropped your phone, got it wet, or exposed it to moisture? These are the three most common reasons why the hardware of your phone gets damaged. The best option you have right now is to bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.

S4 Can’t Download/Consumes Mobile Data

Problem: Hi, wondering if you could help please! im having 2 problems with my samsung galaxy s4. the first is i can’t seem to download anything at all… i used to and haven’t altered anything but over the last 6month can’t even download a restaurant menu! it says download started but then says unsuccessful. the next is that i appear to use all my data within like a wk where before i never had this issue. i browse the internet but close the screen when done and also fbook but how do i check if im leaving something running without realising? many thanks.

Solution: Regarding the download issue of your phone the first thing you should check is the Internet connection. Try switching between a Wi-Fi and your mobile data connection and check if the issue exists for both modes. If it does then your next step is to wipe the cache partition of your phone as this may be caused by some form of corrupt temporary data.

The second issue of your data getting consumed is most likely caused by an app or apps that is syncing in the background. Some apps that you should check are your social media apps such as Facebook, email apps, and Google Photos (if you have enabled it) just to name a few.

To make sure that you have closed an app follow the steps outlined below.

  • Press the Home key for a few seconds.
  • The list of the recently opened applications is displayed.
  • Tap on the Task Manager.
  • Tap on the Finish button next to the application you want to close.

S4 Turns On When Charger Is Connected

Problem: Hello, I manually upgraded my galaxy S4 to kitkat since it was rooted, upgrade couldn’t be done automatically. It was successfully done but thereafter my phone turns on automatically whenever a charger is connected. How can i solve this problem. I sometimes prefer turning off my phone while charging which has been impossible now. Any help plz?

Solution: Is the KitKat version you installed the stock firmware version for your device? Several other owners of this model who have also experienced this same issue have their phones running on stock ROM.

If the power saving mode of your phone is enabled it may also cause this issue. Try switching it off.

  • Go to the home screen of your Samsung Galaxy S4.
  • Press the “Menu” button
  • Tap on “Settings”
  • Tap on “My Device”
  • From your My device tab, scroll your way down to the “Power Saving” option
  • Tap the switch to toggle to Off

S4 Heat Up On Charging

Problem: Hello, I have a t-mobile s4. I purchased the phone used and it was working perfectly for the past six months. I also had it inside an otterbox case. Then last night I had the phone charge over night as I usually do. I did use a charger that I typically don’t use. Anyways upon awaking up I found my phone to be the hottest it has ever been and removed it from the otterbox case. Upon further inspection the phone would not turn on at all. I have tried using a different charger, swapping another battery, all the reset methods such as hard, soft, etc. I have yet to be able to show any signs of life from the phone. Not even the red charging indicator led. I then decided to open the phone up for examination. What I noticed was that if I have the battery in as well as the phone plugged in I notice a great amount of heat buildup near the four connection prongs that make contact to the battery. Therefore this portion of the logic board greatly heats up. Does this mean that the logic board has gone bad or what do you think would cause for this intense heating at this location. Thank you.

Solution: Have you tried using the original wall charger of the phone and check if the heat is still present? Try doing this first and use another battery.

Since this issue occurred right after using another charger then it may be caused by the charger you used. The charger may be supplying an incorrect voltage or there may be a shorted circuit that has affected the hardware of your phone.

To get an accurate assessment of the issue you should bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.

S4 Stuck In Easy Mode

Problem: I have downloaded an app to root my s4. Start rooted and stop. And now my phone is stuck on easymode and won’t come off no matter how much time I try putting it on standard mode.

Solution: To change to standard mode follow the steps listed below.

  • From the home screen hit the menu button
  • From the menu select Easy Settings and from the new screen select More Settings.
  • You should now be in the full settings menu, take note to the tabs at the top of the screen which can be selected, select the second tab that says: My Device.
  • From the new menu look for: Home screen mode and select Standard mode.
  • Apply and select OK

If the issue still persists then you should do a factory reset. Just make sure to backup your data first.

S4 Unresponsive After Being Dropped

Problem: Hi. I’m currently having trouble with my Samsung s4. Was wondering if I could have some help or advice please? Earlier today I dropped my phone and smashed the front screen & also the little metal thing that holds the sim in place became loose. It would not clip the sim in. All day I had “no sim inserted emergency calls only” apart from that the phone worked. I had about 70% charge. While fiddling about with the loose sim holder I dropped my phone again & the battery fell out, When I put the battery back in it did not vibrate like it usually does as soon as inserted. When I tried to power it on I had no response. I have tried holding down the volume keys at the same time, I’ve taken the battery in & out countless times and still nothing. My phone Is not recognising the battery at all (from the lack of vibration once inserted) My phone seems to be completely unresponsive. I don’t know wether it could be the phone or the battery. I don’t know what I do next but I do need to know IF it’s possible to repair either way as I’m desperate, I have so much vital stuff stored on my phone, I don’t want to just give up and bin it. I assume my first step would be to buy a new battery and see if it works? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank You.

Solution: You are definitely right. The first thing that you should do is to get a new battery and try it on your phone. If it still does not turn on then try connecting your phone to a computer running on the latest Kies software. You can download this from the Samsung website. If the software can detect your phone then you will be able to backup your phone data.

S4 Dropping Calls

Problem: Hi:  my Samsung 4 dropped calls increasingly, until it was every other one.  At the same time, it was jumping programs rapidly and without request or reason. I took it to my Verizon office (Grossmont Center, La Mesa, California) several times;  I was told it was me, and don’t worry.  The fourth visit, and again I demanded a new phone (thinking that I had a lemon), and this time the manager ordered me a replacement phone, without comment.  It arrived, and the office person (sales? They are on commission) transferred my  address book, but did not transfer my  calendar, etc.  I was paying for the backup cloud at the time. Now, three months later, my new Samsung 4 is beginning to drop calls after about 30 seconds, as well.  It has become so bad and frequent that I am, once more, using land Lines, whenever they are available, rather than my call-dropping Samsung 4. I have just found, on the internet, comments and others complaining about the same thing.  There are also suggestions, by you, how to solve that;  I will try them.

Solution: The first thing you need to do is to eliminate any network related issues. If you have another phone under the Verizon network then try making a call with it. If you don’t experience any dropped calls then we can eliminate this being caused by your network.

Next, you will want to check if the issue occurs in a particular area (such as your home) or if it occurs anywhere you may be. Try making calls in different areas and check if the problem persists. If it does then we can proceed with troubleshooting the phone.

You will want to make sure that your phone is running no the latest software update. There have been reported cases where owners of this device experiencing dropped calls resolved the issue by updating the software of their phones.

If your phone is already running on the latest software update then the next step you can do is to perform a factory reset. Make sure to backup your data before performing this procedure.

If the factory reset fails to resolve the issue then this may already be a hardware related problem. If you can still have it replaced then do so. Otherwise, I suggest you bring the phone to an authorized service center for checking.

S4 Can’t Send/Receive text Messages

Problem: Ok so i recently got a samsung galaxy s4 and i have it activated through straight talk. Everything works on the phone asides from the texting. I can not send or recieve any text messages. This is rather worrying as im paying 45 dollars a month for unlimeted talk, text, and data and am only getting 2/3 of the deal. If you could offer any advice it would be most appreciated.

Solution: Try to restart our phone then check if you can send a text message. Restarting your phone re-establishes its connection to the Straight Talk Network and should allow you to send and receive messages.

If he issue persists try clearing the cache of your messaging app.

  • From the home screen, tap Apps.
  • Scroll to and tap Settings.
  • Tap More.
  • Tap Application manager.
  • Swipe left to view the All tab.
  • Scroll to and tap the Messges application.
  • Tap Clear cache.
  • You’ve now cleared the application cache.

You should also check your Messaging app settings if the SMS message center number is the one used by Straight Talk. You will have to contact Straight Talk to confirm the correct settings.

S4 Can’t Connect To Kies

Problem: Hello Droid Guy, I have been using Kies to sync my Samsung Galaxy S4 (Australian version) with MS outlook (calendar, contacts etc) for more than 12 months—great. But recently when I connect the phone via USB Kies tells me the ‘Device is not responding’ and hence the sync does not work. Kies is seeing my phone’s name but will not connect with the device. Any suggestion please????? Thank you in advance.

Solution: Try doing the steps listed below to resolve the issue.

  • Disconnect the device and data cable from your computer, then reconnect.
  • Try connecting the USB cable to a different port on your computer.
  • If you are connecting the USB cable to a USB hub, try connecting the cable directly to your computer.
  • If you are connecting the USB cable to a docking station, try connecting the cable directly to your computer.
  • Verify you are running the latest version of Kies 3 by clicking Information > Check for updates.
  • Close Kies 3 and reopen the application.
  • Reboot your computer and your device.

If the issue still persists then uninstall the Kies application. Download a fresh copy of the software from the Samsung website and reinstall it in your computer.
