Samsung Galaxy S5 won’t boot up / black screen issue
Problem: Hello. I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S5 and a problem suddenly occurred. I am guessing it is due to a bug — the screen just went black and won’t come back on. Everything works fine but I just can’t see the screen. is there any way that I can get it to come back on again? Thanks. — Tashalyn
Troubleshooting: Hi Tashalyn. A Samsung Galaxy S5 not loading the screen can be a by-product of a rogue app installed on the device, or a faulty hardware normally related to the phone’s display. Since you did not provide more details other than the one you mentioned, we can begin our troubleshooting by identifying a possible software cause. The first step is to bring the phone in Safe Mode so you can uninstall the troublesome app, assuming that you installed something prior to this problem. Safe Mode is basically an alternate “mode” in your phone’s operation that forces it to run factory-provided apps only. This means that any after-market apps you installed before will not run, helping your phone to boot up normally. We have a short tutorial on how to enable Safe Mode in your Samsung Galaxy S5 in this link.
Once you’re in Safe Mode, try to remember what was the app that you installed before this problem happened. If you are not sure, just uninstall any or all of the third party apps that you have. We suggest that you do this systematically by uninstalling one app after another. Make sure to test your phone after you uninstall every app so as not to remove others that are not causing the issue.
Just follow these steps on how to uninstall your apps:
- Go to Home screen then tap Apps
- Select Settings.
- Scroll to APPLICATIONS and tap Application manager
- Swipe right to the DOWNLOADED screen
- Tap the desired application
- Tap Uninstall
- Tap Uninstall again to confirm
We resolve an issue like you have by following these steps, 95% of the time. However, if the problem remains, this is a clear indicator that your phone suffers from hardware failure, most probably, on the display part. Unfortunately, we don’t recommend any user-initiated hardware fixes because they usually demand advanced electronics knowledge and experience. We suggest that you allow a technician to check your phone or request for a replacement from your carrier or retailer.
Samsung Galaxy S5 mobile data stops working
Problem: Dear Droid Guy. So I’ve been in college since August, and my phone has had great signal and connection to data, but I randomly woke up today to my phone being in “roaming” and no data connection whatsoever. At first i was just like OK maybe it’s just a temporary problem and my phones signal and data connection will go back to normal. It has been like that all day; I can barely ever send text messages. Only after it fails multiple times, and I can’t connect to the Internet at all. I was just wondering if you had any idea what’s going on with my phone, because I’ve visited the same spots everyday with no signal or connection problems up to today and it is really annoying not being able to make contact with anyone. Troubleshooting: Hi Jake. Have you considered checking if your phone’s roaming mode had been unwittingly enabled? To find this out, just follow our steps below:
- Go to Home screen and to Apps
- Select Settings
- Scroll to and tap More networks
- Tap Mobile networks
- Tap Data roaming
- Tap OK if prompted
You can enable or disable data roaming mode by tapping on Data roaming again.
Once roaming mode has been disabled, your phone should normally connect to its home network without problems. If it’s otherwise, then we must continue our troubleshooting to try to isolate why the device continues to fail to establish data connection to your carrier.
Before we proceed with our connectivity troubleshooting, make sure that your phone’s mobile data is enabled. Also, if you have a special app from your carrier that handles network connection like the Sprint Zone make sure to turn on prior to troubleshooting. There’s a chance that a simple misconfiguration of that app may be causing the problem. If you are not sure on this, kindly call your carrier and ask them about it.
Performing a soft reset, however simple, can sometimes works wonders. To do this, simply turn off your phone, wait for 30 seconds after the shut down, and remove the battery. After another 30 seconds, reinsert the battery and try to connect.
Because this is a data connection problem, it would be wise to call your carrier as they can offer more extensive support. We can never eliminate the chance that there might also be a network side problem so talking to your carrier is the safest way to go in this situation.
Other troubleshooting steps involve updating your software and connecting to Wi-Fi temporarily (as a remedy).
You may also want to find someone who can better diagnose the issue if you suspect that hardware failure is the root cause.
Samsung Galaxy S5 vibrator does not work
Problem: So I purchased my Galaxy S5 about a month ago and today it just decided it didn’t want to vibrate anymore. I don’t know how to fix it; I’ve tried taking the battery out and restarting but neither have worked. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you. — Paige
Troubleshooting: While a known issue, a vibrator problem can be usually resolved by a user by checking and changing some settings on the phone. But because this is such a rare problem on an S5, we are not clear on the fact if majority of the reported cases are being caused by hardware failure; we normally don’t get feedback from our readers in our site (or even from other websites) on how exactly they were able to resolve this problem. Nonetheless, below are some steps that you can do to try to fix the problem.
Perform a hardware check. This is the first logical troubleshooting step that we should try. We want to cut the time you spend on checking for software settings by doing this simple step. Basically, what we want to do is to determine if the vibration motor is working or not via your phone’s service menu. To do this, just open your phone’s dialer, dial *#0842#, access Vibra Motor Test Mode, and tap on the first two options (Motor ON and Motor always IN). If the phone vibrates, then most probably, the root cause of the problem has something to do with the settings. Otherwise, it indicates a hardware failure and your only way out is either to get a replacement phone, or have it checked by a technician.
Assuming that your vibration motor still works, you want to proceed to the next steps below.
Use other vibration patterns. Some vibration patterns are so designed for minimal vibration that some user may not “feel” it from time to time for whatever reason. Some patterns though can be real intense so using them may be more preferable for you over others. We recommend that you use Zig-zig-zig pattern for better vibration intensity. To change the length of vibration and intensity, just go to Settings>select Sound>tap Vibration intensity>pick your preferred intensity for different notifications>select your desired vibration pattern. If you want to be a little bit creative, you can also try creating your own vibration pattern to suit your taste by simple tapping of create button.
Clear possible corrupted system files. Vibration function can be affected by damaged or corrupted system files so we want to make sure that the phone’s software is optimized all the time. In the context of a vibration failure issue, you want to delete some system files associated with some apps, ringtones, and wallpapers by going into the phone’s system dump. To put it simply, we want to check that the copy of the current operating system and some set of files on your device is healthy. To do this, just dial *#9900# and select Low Battery Dump.
Perform a factory reset. As a user, you can only do so much. Thankfully, you still have a chance to keep your phone and get it to run flawlessly again by restoring it to its factory state. However, this comes at some cost as this will delete everything on your device except the operating system. Should you decide to do this, do not forget to create a back up of your files and settings first. Using Helium Backup to create a copy of your files is our preferred method of copying things before doing a factory reset. This app is an efficient way to copy, store, and restore your files and settings. You can also manually copy your data to your computer if you don’t want to install Helium Backup.
Replace the phone. Obviously, this step is our final suggestion so you can continue using your S5. Replacement may be offered by Samsung or your carrier depending on your agreement.
Samsung Galaxy S5 freezes when Google account are accessed
Problem: I’ve been encountering an issue with my new S5 where anything related to my Google account freezes. When I try to refresh my inbox in Gmail, launch a game attached to my Google Play account, and others, none of them work. A reset fixes things for a little while but eventually the phone gets back into a bad state.
I’ve had the phone for just over a week and the problem is relatively new. Best guess is an app I downloaded is the culprit, but how would I figure out which one? Worst case is there a way to see what apps were added when? That way I don’t have to try and go off memory, or worse do a factory reset.

Troubleshooting: Hi Jason. If this issue did not happen before you installed a possible rogue app, the best thing that you can do is to bring your device in Soft Mode. While in soft mode, your phone will only be running the apps installed when you unboxed your phone. This means that no third party apps will be active so you can uninstall them one by one. If you suspect a specific app to be causing this problem, make sure to uninstall it first. After removing it, restart your phone to bring it to normal mode then check if the problem has been resolved. If not, do the same drill on other apps until you can eliminate the problematic one. Samsung Galaxy S5 lag or stutter problem
Problem: Hi, found your site and hope that you can help. I have had an S5 for about 6 months now and never had an issue. However, recently the phone has started to hang while typing or freeze up. I will have to wait for it to catch up and respond. Sometimes it’s hard to wake it up after it sleeps. I also have been getting a lot of message saying that xyz app is not responding. Not sure if that is the best description of what is happening.
I haven’t done anything different or downloaded any new apps. Any help you can provide would be great. Thanks. — Lance
Troubleshooting: Hi Lance. The problem you have right now can be caused by a variety of reasons so we want to make that we clearly narrow down the root cause by following a series of steps. Just follow the steps below and tell us if nothing of them works for you.
Minimize multi-tasking. The most common reason why a powerful device like an S5 lags is because of multi-tasking. If you are the type who is fond of opening apps simultaneously, there’s a big chance that the RAM is simply overwhelmed to handle all the phone’s requests. Random Access Memory or RAM is your phone’s temporary storage designed to allow the CPU or central processing unit to write to and read from, making seemingly mundane user input such as opening an app done in a more efficient manner. RAM can only handle so much so simultaneously running apps can crush it, resulting to poor performance usually manifested slow response time or lag. Although your device can handle multiple apps running at the same time, some apps may have higher demand for processing power and resources that might simply overwhelm your RAM. Heavy-graphics games and videos are resource-hungry so try not to run them concurrently.
Try using an alternate launcher. It is known that Samsung’s built-in TouchWiz launcher is demanding. We recommend that you switch to other similar apps like Nova Launcher or Google Now, both of which are free for download from Google Play Store, and see if any of them makes any difference.
Turn off animations. If you notice ripples or exploding colors whenever you lock your screen, it’s an indication that your animations are enabled and may be contributing to the lag your phone is showing. While designed to be enabled and not cause any performance problem, animations can still use up resources that helps drain your phone’s resources even faster. Getting rid of animations can be a useful step to resolve your phone’s stutter or lag problem. To disable animations, follow these steps:
- Disable lock screen. Go to Settings>Lock screen>Unlock effect>None
- Disable home screen transitions. Go to your phone’s home screen and long press on a blank area>Home screen settings>Transition effect>None
- Disable other animations. Go to Settings>About device>tap Build number 7 times to enable Developer mode> Developer options>Window animation scale>Animation is off. Go back to Developer options and turn off Transition animation scale and Animation duration scale.
Turn off Data sync option. If your phone downloads a big file or if having trouble doing so, one of the results is significant decrease in performance. To ensure that this does not happen, disabling Auto data sync is the safest way to go. Settings>Data usage>tap the 3-dot Menu key on the upper right hand side>Uncheck the Auto sync data option.
Remove bloat ware. Both Samsung and your service provider can add bloat ware that vary from useful productivity apps to totally useless e-commerce-linked ones. Although a majority of these apps are designed to cater to many different wants of millions of Samsung S5 users, some of them can be resource hogs that can dry your system memory very quickly. Unfortunately, not all of these bloat ware can be removed from your device so you may want to just disable them instead. This will keep them from running again unless manually opened again. To disable bloatware, go to App drawer>select Uninstall/disable apps>select an app>select your desired action whether to disable or uninstall.
Delete S5’s Cache. A phone’s cache is designed to allow for faster opening of apps Each app that you use generates a cache that can eventually clog your phone’s storage system. Regularly deleting your phone’s cache is considered a normal maintenance on any phone like your S5 to minimize instances of lag. To delete the cache of apps, just follow these instructions:
- Go to Home screen
- Open the Apps list
- Go to Settings app
- Go to Applications section
- Select Application manager
- Swipe left or right depending on what type of app you want to clear the app of — Downloaded, SD card, Running, All
- Select the app you want
- Tap Clear data
- Tap OK
- Tap Clear cache
Pedometer no longer working on Samsung Galaxy S5
Problem: The pedometer no longer displays in the front screen (lock screen ) and it also doesn’t give me any alerts. I often have to open the app to get it to update on the normal screen. Any suggestions? — delano

Samsung Galaxy S5 email not receiving messages
Problem: Hi. I have the Galaxy S5 and it has worked fine for months. However, suddenly yesterday the incoming email stopped to sync and I stopped receiving emails. I can send out emails but not receive any.
I did check the sync settings and all seemed to set correctly, so I decided to delete my existing account and reset it again. I have done this in the past and it had worked. The problem is that every time I want to delete the existing account it’ll turn for 10 minutes and then a message will pop up “Email not responding”.
I have spent many hours on this, doing it again and again but without any success.

Troubleshooting: Hi Abe. A number of factors can possibly cause this issue so our first task is to identify the most like root cause. Based on a number of email issues we encountered so far, your S5 fails to receive incoming messages because any of the following reasons are causing it to fail:
- Limited background data
- Sync option has been disabled
- Email forwarding option is being used
- Email client is downloading unusually large file
- Intermittent data/Wi-Fi connection
- Incorrect email configuration
- Hardware issues
- Provider-side outage
- On-going email server problems
- S5 runs an outdated system software
First, in order not waste your time and effort, we suggest that you call your service provider to check with them if there are any outages, particularly in your area. Depending on your email, you also want to consult the right party if there are any service-related problems that may be causing your phone to not download your messages. If you are using a free, popular email like Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Outlook, etc, try searching Google for any indications of service interactions of these products.
Second, verify is your phone has any visible hardware damage like moisture-related problems that may affect the functions of your device. If you cannot recall any incident that may cause your device to suffer from any hardware damage, simply ignore this step.
Third, do a soft reset. This can be done by turning your phone off and waiting for 30 seconds before removing the battery. After another 30 seconds, re-insert the battery then restart the phone.
Fourth, check your phone’s sync options to see if it’s properly enabled. Go to Home>tap Menu>Touch Settings>Touch Connections>Touch Data Usage>Tap Menu and ensure Auto sync data is checked>Data usage application>tap your Email app>go to the bottom part and check if Restrict background data is enabled. After doing this step, make sure to send a test email to the same account to check if your it’s now working properly.
Lastly, make sure to clear your email app cache.
