S4 Can’t Make/Receive Calls After KitKat Upgrade

Problem: Hi, got Samsung s4, upgraded from KitKat 4.2 to 4.4, I can send / receive txt messages , but cannot make or receive any calls. any idea, whats wrong ?

Solution: If this issue only occurred right after you upgraded the software of your phone then this may just be a software glitch that usually occurs whenever a major upgrade is done on a phone. This is usually cause by data from the old software version that should have been removed during the upgrade process but is still present in your phone.

To completely take out this data you need to perform a factory reset. Make sure to backup your data first before doing this.

  • Turn off the device.

  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key.

  • When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.

  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.

  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’

  • Press Power button to select.

  • Press the Volume down key until ‘delete all user data’ is highlighted.

  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.

  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.

  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the issue persists then you should contact your network provider and inquire if there are any network related issues in your area that may be preventing you from making or receiving a call.

To test if it is your SIM that is causing the problem you should try to insert another SIM in your phone or use your SIM in another phone.

S4 Bookmarks Don’t Appear

Problem: Recently my s4 stopped showing any bookmarks that i add. If i add one it doesn’t appear in the list, but if i try to add it again i get a message that it already exists. I tried deleting out dated bookmarks but the problem persists. The others that appear, function aok.

Solution: Are you having problems viewing the bookmarks on the Chrome browser or with the default phone browser? Whichever browser you are using you should try clearing its cache and data to resolve the issue.

  • From the home screen, tap Apps.

  • Scroll to and tap Settings.

  • Tap More.

  • Tap Application manager.

  • Swipe left to view the All tab.

  • Scroll to and tap the browser application.

  • Tap Clear cache.

  • Tap Clear data.

S4 SD Card Data Can’t Be Accessed

Problem: Hello, i have a Samsung s4 with a 64gb lexor sd card. I never had a problem with it before but my phone rebooted itself and wait it came back on i realized all the apps i had on the sd card couldn’t be opened and all my music on it was gone. i tried restarting but nothing happened. when i checked the storage i saw the option to mount the sd card but it was already mounted. now my s4 is saying that the card is blank or have unsupported files and need formatting. how do i fix this problem?

Solution: What you should do is to turn off your phone then take out the SD card and try reinserting it again. In some cases the SD card may be misaligned with the phone contact points causing this type of scenario.

If this doesn’t resolve the issue then you should take it out again and insert it in your computer (you may need an SD card reader to do this). Check if your computer can read your card and if it can copy all of its contents to a folder in your computer. This way you create a backup of your files (photos, music, documents, etc.) that are stored in the card. Format your card using the FAT32 file system. Insert the SD card again in your phone then see if it works.

If the event that the computer does not recognize the SD card then it may already be broken.

S4 “unfortunately messaging has stopped”

Problem: I own a galaxy s4 I have had it for about 4 on the now. I have been having a problem with my messaging app. At fist when I would text someone it would freeze and when it unfroze it would type what I was typing like a studder, this started happening a few days ago and now when I send a message it will close out of the app saying “unfortunately messaging has stopped.” I have tried to delete messages by selecting the ones I want to delete and deleting them all together but when I hit the trashcan button it does the same thing, closes out and says “unfortunately messaging has stopped.” Please help me I love this phone!!

Solution: You should start with clearing the cache and data of your messaging app. Before doing so save any important messages that you have.

  • From the home screen, tap Apps.

  • Scroll to and tap Settings.

  • Tap More.

  • Tap Application manager.

  • Swipe left to view the All tab.

  • Scroll to and tap the Messaging application.

  • Tap Clear cache.

  • Tap Clear data.

If the issue still persists then you should consider doing a factory reset. Make sure to backup all your important information first before performing this procedure.

S4 Stuck In Safe Mode

Problem: My phone is a Samsung galaxy s4 from Verizon. It’s currently out of service but can still be used with WiFi. I dropped it a few weeks ago and no major damage was done, but the volume up/down button is dented in and stuck in “up mode” I didn’t really have any problems with it. I can even get it back on if it powers off by holding the volume down button in and that prevents it from going into the reboot screen. But nothing I mean absolutely nothing will get it out of safe mode. And I’ve tried it all. Removing battery. Removing Sim. Holding in buttons while powering, on wiping cache. Nothing is working and it’s driving me insane. I just want my apps back. What can I do to get it out of this dreaded safe mode.

Solution: It appears that the reason why this is happening is because the drop may have affected an internal component of your phone that is related to booting your phone to Safe Mode. Your best option right now is to bring your phone to an authorized servie center and have it repaired.

S4 Freezes/Restarts When Collage App Is Used

Problem: Hi can you help me? On my Samsung Galaxy s4 is a photo app called Collage version 1.0.245. Viewing any friends gallery online for instance on Facebook. Or while browsing the gallery of photos on my phone. Anything to do with pictures basically while using this app. The screen will go black the phone will vibrate, 10 seconds later it restarts and I’m back at my lock screen. It does not back out of the app or freeze, never goes to home screen. Restarts every time then back to lock screen. I can view photos through crome or Google but anytime this app has to be involved this problem happens. I can however take pictures or video watch and play them immediately after capturing. The pictures are saved to this app and I can access them with a photo editor without problem. Sometimes the problem doesn’t happen right away either I’ll be looking or scrolling for 60 sec to 1 min then bam. When I’m lucky enough to get a min and access a video it plays until the end no problem or if I tap on a pic I can view it forever it’s not until I go back to gallery. I can assign my photos to contacts, home, and lock screen. Even share photos or video with Facebook or email. The problem seems to be in the phones/apps use of gallery feature. I don’t really know. Can you help? I hope I’ve been descriptive enough and I think you guys are wonderful for being available to hopefully help me get to the bottom of this problem. Truly grateful.

Solution: To verify if it is really this app that is causing the issue you should try to uninstall it first. Now, try to view your gallery. If your phone does not freeze then the app may have compatibility issues with your phone software. Try checking if there is an updated version of the app at the Google Play Store and if there is download it. If no update is available then refrain from using the pap until a new version arrives.

S4 Photo Retrieval

Problem: Hi, I saw the questions and answers about android phones on It is very impressive. I think I will get a resolution to my issue only through you folks.

Here is the issue:

My phone was connected to a charger and I was listening to online radio through an App. When phone suddenly powered off. I thought it powered off because the battery was drained. I went home and connected its charger and let it charge for 30 minutes and tried to power up. It didn’t power up. I tried a different charger but the result was same.

I tried to plug another battery from my wife’s S4 (which was working). The phone did vibrate when I pressed the power button. It powered up and home screen showed up. I tried to connect it to my PC and tried to back up the pictures. But it again turned off very soon. I tried pluging out the battery a couple of times but the same result. It was charging with a message saying “your phone is overheating”. I did all this exercise after plugging out SD card and SIM card. I also turned off all the interfaces like bluetooth, wifi, mobile data, NFC but still the same result. This all happened after a Kitkat update that I recently received for my phone from Verizon. My phone is Verizon Galaxy S4.

The place next to memory card on the back of the phone gets heated up very badly which a charged battery is plugged in.

I am an electronics engineer with understanding of how these gadgets work. So if required I can disassemble the device and try doing something with it if required.

Please suggest some solution. I am OK to loose the phone. But Don’t want to loose photos of my 1 year old daughter on the phone. So I would be happy even if I can get some way to retrieve my data from the phone memory. Thanks a bunch!!

Solution: There are also other owners of this phone under the Verizon network who have experienced the same issue as soon as they upgraded their software to KitKat. One of the popular methods to resolve this issue is to take out th SD card then start the phone but apparently this does not work in your case.

Before taking your phone apart you should first do a factory reset. This will however delete all data in your phone including your photos. You should therefore try to connect your phone to a computer running Kies first. If your phone can be detected then you will be able to make a backup of your phone data. Once the backup has been made proceed to doing a factory reset.

If the factory reset fails to resolve the issue then this may already be a hardware related issue. If this is the case then there are a lot of things to consider. It’s best to bring your phone to an authorized service center as they can do a through check.

S4 Won’t Turn Off When Charging

Problem: My husband’s Galaxy S4 will not turn off while charging and I cannot figure out why. He has had it only 3 days and has only installed the Facebook app, nothing you possibly have a solution for this problem? I checked in his settings, as I’ve had the 3 forever and now a 5, but couldn’t find anything causing it to do that..thanks for taking the time to read my email! Have a happy holiday!!

Solution: Try going to your phone settings then developer options and uncheck the stay awake option.

S4 Green Light Running On Screen

Problem: Hello, I have a Samsung S4 phone and it has a green light running through the middle of the screen, what should I do? Regards.

Solution: It looks like this may already be a hardware related problem. It’s either you have a faulty display, faulty connector, or an issue with the board. Ty doing a battery pull on your device first by removing the battery while it is on then reinserting it after a couple of seconds. Turn on your phone. If the issue still persists then you should bring your phone to an authorized service center for checking.

S4 Display Randomly Turns On With All Colors

Problem: Hello, My Samsung Galaxy s4 screen suddenly without a reason start glitching and the screen looks like moving upwards in a continuous roll with all colours possible , So I remove battery , SD card and SIM and press the Power Button for a minute then try to restart it. Sometimes the screen work, sometimes I have to repeat the process many times before it start working again. This has been happening for 2 weeks now. It’s be really great if there’s a solution for that. Thanks in advance.

Solution: Most of the time when a phone acts this way it means that there is a problem with the hardware. It could be with the display itself, a loose flex cable, or a controller board. Your best option is to bring your phone to an authorized service center to pinpoint the exact cause of the problem and have it fixed.

S4 Messaging App Freezes

Problem: While trying to message a picture using the native Messaging app, the app became very slow and eventually froze. I switched to GoSMS Pro and it froze as well. Every time I opened either app, they would freeze once I attempted to send a message. This got progressively worse and both apps began freezing upon opening and locking up my phone until a notification saying the app had stopped working popped up. Attempting to remedy this, I uninstalled GoSMS Pro and cleared the cache and data from the Messaging app. The problem persisted. I then did a soft reset, but no change. I tried using Google Hangouts and it froze as well. Eventually Google Hangouts started working. However, simply opening the native Messaging app would it to freeze and stop working. I decided to live with out the native app and simply use Hangouts. Everything worked fine, until this afternoon. I sent a text from Hangouts and it did not appear to send, so tried again. Nothing. The app did not freeze or stop, it just would not recognize that I was trying to send a message. So, I opened Messaging to try and send the text. Big mistake. The freezing began all over again. Both apps would not even open. They would simply begin to open, freeze, and then after locking up my phone for about 5 minutes, I would get the notification saying that the app had stopped. Suddenly, about two hours later, Hangouts began working again. Messaging is still a death trap. Any idea what might be wrong and how I can fix this problem? Thanks in advance!

Solution: You should first try to check if there are any new software updates for your phone and apply them. These updates come with improvements and bug fixes that may help resolve the issue.

The next thing that you should do is to wipe your phone cache partition. This is usually down when your phone is not working correctly. This procedure deletes the temporary data in your phone which may be causing the problem. This does not felete any of your data such as photos, music, etc.

  • Turn off the device.

  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key

  • When the phone vibrates, let go of the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.

  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.

  • Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’

  • Press the Power key to select. The phone will automatically restart after the cache is wiped.

If the issue still persists then you should do a factory reset. Make sure to backup your data first as this will be deleted in the process.

S4 Can’t Receive Calls

Problem: Hi, hope you can help me. Bought Samsung s4 a month ago, since then struggled to receive any phone calls. I can make calls myself but anyone phoning me is referred to my voicemail. I have phoned my network provider and they took me through certain steps to try and fix it, but it would only work when I transferred my sim to a different handset. I now have a replacement phone but it does the same thing again !!! Frustrating as my job involves a lot of phone calls. Is there anything in the settings that needs to be changed? Please help.

Solution: Since the issue also occurs with your replacement phone then there’s a big possibility that this could be network related issue. The signal in your area may be weak. Try going to another area and test if you can receive calls normally.

You should also try using a different SIM in your phone to test if the problem is with the SIM itself.

S4 Can’t Open Emails

Problem: Hi, I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 and it won’t let me open my email icon, and randomly pops up on my screen that the email has stopped working! How can I fix this issue?

Solution: You should clear your email app cache and data. Take note that you will have to setup your email again after performing this procedure so you have to take note of your correct email settings first.

  • From the home screen, tap Apps.

  • Scroll to and tap Settings.

  • Tap More.

  • Tap Application manager.

  • Swipe left to view the All tab.

  • Scroll to and tap the Email application.

  • Tap Clear cache.

  • Tap Clear data.

S4 Headphone Does Not work Unless Bent

Problem: When I plug in the head phones I got with my s4 the headphones symbol doesn’t show up until I bend the tip of my headphones connecter why is that.

Solution: This problem is a connection issue caused by your headphone and 3.5mm headphone jack not connecting properly. There are three factors that couls lead to this type of issue.

First, the 3,5mm headphone jack may have dirt in it which makes it difficult for the headphone to connect properly unless it is bent. If this is the case then you should try to use a toothpick to get rid of this dirt.

Second, this may be caused by a faulty headphone. Try to use a different pair of headphones and see if the problem gets resolved.

Third, this may be caused by a loose connection of your phone headphone jack to the main board. If this is the case then you will have to bring your phone to an authorized service center for checking and repair.

S4 Changing Default Storage To SD Card

Problem: Hi there, I just want to know if there is a way i can change my default storage to SD card. I have Samsung galaxy S4 with KitKat 4.4.2.

Solution: To make the SD card your default storage for your photos follow the steps below.

  • Tap the Settings icon to view more options.

  • Tap the Settings icon to enter the settings menu

  • Tap the Settings tab.

  • Scroll down to find Storage, then tap it. You’ll see two options available

  • Select Memory Card to save photos in your SD card

Only certain apps can be moved to the SD card due to security reasons. You cn check if an app can be moved by following the steps below.

  • Select Settings.

  • Select Application Manager in More tab.

  • Flick the screen to the right and move to ON SD CARD section. – Applications stored to SD card is displayed.

  • Select the application that you would like to change storage location.

S4 Not Downloading Emails

Problem: I have spent two days on the phone with At&t, Samsung, and Windstream Tech. My phone has started not downloading the e-mails that are downloaded to computer. If the phone gets them first I get them. I have spent hours with tech personnel trying to resolve this. The last one I spoke to told me it was resolved, but it is just the same.

Solution: You should change the setting of your computer email to leave a copy of retrieved emails on the server. If this option is unchecked then the email retrieved by your computer will be deleted from the server. This allows other devices, such as your phone, to retrieve the same email.

S4 Keeps on Restarting

Problem: I just got my new s4 from us cellular on Friday the 12th. Since the day after it has been restarting intermittently 10 to 20 times a day. The screen will go black and after 15 or 20 seconds it will restart. Sometimes while playing a game or browsing the web. Others just sitting on the table idle. Already tried factory reset. Un installed all my apps and checked for a bulging battery. Really like this phone but beginning to like it less with each restart. Please help.

Solution: Does your phone have a microSD card installed? If so, try removing it and check if it still restarts. You should also check your phone while the SIM card is removed. If the issue persists then this may already be a hardware related problem. You should bring your phone to an authorized service center for checking.

S4 Stuck In Low Volume

Problem: My galaxy s4 is stuck on low media volume. My grandmother had for a few months before me until she upgraded and gave it to me. She never had any problems. I am, how ever. Whenever I want to play a video, the volume doesn’t work. I put on Pandora once to test it out and it only worked on one game. I go to the volume settings and it doesn’t let me turn it up. Help?

Solution: The volume up button of your phone may have a problem either it is not making contact with the board or if this could be a board controller issue. Before ruling this as a hardware related issue I suggest performing a factory reset on your phone first.

If after the factory reset the issue still persists then you should bring your phone to an authorized service center for checking.

S4 Can’t Send Pictures Using Default Messenger App

Problem: Hi. I recently bought a rooted s4 and put it on the h2o network with AT&T. I haven’t really had problems with it besides sending pictures through my default messenger app. I downloaded another messenger and it worked. The other problem I have is my camera, or the file. Whenever I take pictures and I access my pictures the thumbnail shows it as a broken file. Ones that actually take, when I go to viewing them multiple times those pictures end up broken or corrupted also. I tried sending one of the pictures through handcent messenger, which worked before….now I try to send a good picture through the messenger and it crashes. I just paid $300 for this phone and would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you.

Solution: You should try wiping the cache partition of your phone as this usually helps resolve this type of issue. This is usually done when your phone does not work normally. This procedure does not delete your phone data (pictures, music, apps, setting).

S4 Freezes When Opening Email

Problem: My phone has started locking up when I try to open e-mails. I use a g-mail account and the e-mail comes in fine, but when I go to open it to read it, it starts the little searching icon and the e-mail never opens. If I restart the phone then the emails will open again until I close the app. When I go back the problem is back again. The phone is not connected to a wi-fi network and is only using the 4G LTE connection. Has anyone experienced this problem?

Solution: Try clearing the cache and data of your email app as this may be the cause of the problem. Make sure to get the correct settings of your email as you will need to set this up again.
