Welcome to the 53rd part in our series of troubleshooting articles dedicated to the Samsung Galaxy S4. This is one of our longest running series to date owing to the fact that a lot of owners of this phone send to us emails regarding the issues and concerns that they are facing with it. Another reason is that this particular model is one of the most popular smartphone that Samsung has released. In this latest installment we will tackle some of the recent emails our readers have sent to us.

S4 Backs Out Of Apps

Problem: In the past month my galaxy s4 backs me out of apps all by it’s self. I can feel the vibration like I am hitting the back button and I’m not. It all started after my back button quit working. I have tried to reset my phone and cleared the cache. I have tried safe mode and I also tried in is talking all apps. In safe mode it seems to work better but occasionally it still backs me out of apps. I love this phone and always wanted on, but I’m very disappointed that it has this glitch. I hope you can help me. I have only had my phone 5 months.

Solution: From the way you describe the issue it appears that this may already be a problem caused by a hardware malfunction. You already did everything that could be done to rule out this issue being caused by a software glitch.

One other thing that you could do is to check your phone for any software updates. These updates contain improvements and bug fixes that may help resolve the issue.

If your software is up to date but the issue still persists then this is most likely a hardware related problem. I suggest bringing your phone to an authorized service center for checking.

S4 Videos Randomly Stops, Minimizes After KitKat Update

Problem: Hi, I gave a minor problem since my phone upgraded to KitKat. When watching a video, either from YouTube, Facebook or the net, when I maximize it, the video will randomly stop and minimize. It doesn’t happen a lot, but enough to be annoying. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Solution: Since this problem occurred right after you upgraded the software of your phone to KitKat then there’s a big possibility that doing a factory reset will eliminate the issue. The most common cause of this is that data from the old software is still in your phone and is causing a conflict with the new software version. A factory reset will get rid of this old data. Before proceeding you should backup any of your personal data stored in the phone as this will be deleted in the process.

  • Turn off the device.

  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key.

  • When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.

  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.

  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’

  • Press Power button to select.

  • Press the Volume down key until ‘delete all user data’ is highlighted.

  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.

  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.

  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

S4 Randomly Reboots After Installing Custom Recovery

Problem: I am also experiencing random reboots on my Galaxy S4 and it’s happening for quite a while now. It happened right after I flashed PhilZ touch recovery on my phone. I had a root access before that and everything was perfectly fine then. Could PhilZ be the reason for my phone’s random rebooting problem? What should I do? I just can’t believe a well tested custom recovery tool would do this. Thanks in advance!

Solution: There’s only one way to test if it really is PhilZ that is causing the issue. You should first take it out of your phone. If your phone does not reset after this then you solved the problem. As for the reason why this is happening you should check if the version you installed on your phone is an old one. Try to get the latest version as this usually comes with improvements. It’s also a good idea to check the chagelog of the app so s to get an idea as to what bugs are present.

S4 Web Login Not Working On Wi-Fi Connection

Problem: I have a Samsung S4 on ATT. My problem is when I connect to WiFi requiring Web page log in, it will not go to the login page. With cellular connection, it would go to my web home page. I tried turning off cellular connection, it would say I have no network connection. How do it get it to work? Thanks.

Solution: This issue might not be a phone problem but a wireless router problem. Try connecting to a different wireless network first and see if the issue still occurs.

You mentioned that with a cellular connection your phone can go to your web home page but if you turn off mobile data and use Wi-Fi you get a no network connection message. This makes it more likely a router issue.

S4 Unresponsive

Problem: I am having a major issue with the screen on my galaxy s4 freezing and becoming totally unresponsive. It can occur at completely random even when I have not been using the phone for example I can leave it overnight and pick it up in the morning and I carny even unlock the screen. Sometimes taking the battery out and restarting the phone fixes the problem other times it doesn’t. This is a replacement phone after an insurance claim and the first time it happened was before I had even loaded all my apps. I regularly clear the ram usually minimum of couple of times a day. I also use clean master to clear Internet cache etc. all my apps are approved no dodgy cheat sites etc.

Solution: You should try starting your phone in Safe Mode to check if this issue is caused by a certain app that you installed in your phone. When your phone boots in Safe Mode only the default apps are loaded while those apps that you downloaded from the Google Play Store are disabled.

  • With the device powered on, press and hold the Power button (located on the right edge) until the Phone options prompt appears then release.

  • Tap and hold Power off until the Restart in Safe Mode prompt appears then release.

  • Tap Turn On Safe Mode.

  • The restart process may take up to 45 seconds to complete.

  • Upon restart, Safe mode appears in the lower-left of the unlock/home screen.

Check if the issue still persists in this mode. If it doesn’t then its most likely caused by an app that is installed in your phone. Find out what the app is and uninstall it.

In the event that the issue still persists even in Safe Mode then you’ll have to do a factory reset as this may be caused by a software glitch. Make sure to backup our data before performing the procedure.

S4 “Unfortunately the Internet has stopped”

Problem: Just recently my S4 started giving me the message “Unfortunately the internet has stopped”. This happens every time I click on a link in Facebook that would take me to a webpage using my phones browser. I haven’t changed anything on my phone and can open the browser myself and surf to my heart’s content. Can you give me some idea why my phone suddenly doesn’t like Facebook links and how can I fix it.

Solution: There are other phone owners, not just of the S4, who have also been experiencing this problem lately. The issue appears to occur only on the Facebook app which makes me suspect that a recent update to his app is the cause.

What you need to do first is to verify if the issue only occurs on the FB app. Try to access your FB account on your phone browser and click on any link in you wall. If you can open the link without any issues then the problem is really with the FB app.

You should first try to clear the cache and data of the app. Take note that you will have to login again to your account once the procedure has finished.

  • From the home screen, tap Apps.

  • Scroll to and tap Settings.

  • Tap More.

  • Tap Application manager.

  • Swipe left to view the All tab.

  • Scroll to and tap the Facebook application.

  • Tap Clear cache.

  • Tap Clear data.

If the issue still persists then you should uninstall the app update.

S4 Voice Call Issue

Problem: Hi there, I have a galaxy s4 running kitkat 4.4.4 with many third party apps. I got a problems with this phone as under;

1. When someone calls, I hear the rings and when I pickup the phone I can’t hear calling party’s voice but when I put the phone on speaker, sounds is clear and I can talk normally.

2. In the same condition when I try to dial any number, I don’t hear the dialing tone and if connected there is no sound from called party. I tried every single thing I could find on internet but no luck. The only thing works is I dial *#0*# and touch receiver, if it starts making sound, means voice will pass both way and both parties will be able to hear each other BUT if its does not start making beep, I have to slap it on my hand and then it starts making beep.

Now you should have better idea about this and can think some hardware is loose or something but WHAT? At some forum, I found that there is a IC chip 325A or 325B which is responsible to do this for the phone and it seems to be loose at some point.

Solution: It appears that the voice call problem of your phone is already hardware related. Unfortunately, the exact reason as to why this is happening can’t be determined unless the phone is opened. This may be caused by a loose connection of your phone internal speaker or a damaged IC. I suggest you bring your phone to an authorized service center for checking and repair.

S4 Smiley Gets Converted To Question mark

Problem: Hi, When sending text I always sign off with one of the smiley faces ( not the android ones but the proper smiley faces, sorry for being non-technical!). For a while now people have said why do I send a ? at the end of a text! It seems the smileys etc are not working properly but just send a ? in place. Also just before I send a smiley a message comes up….”MESSAGE MAY BE CORRUPTED ON RECIPIENT DEVICE. CHANGE INPUT MODE TO AUTOMATIC” Any help please???

Solution: The reason why the smiley is seen as a question mark is because your message was sent as an SMS. Change the setting in your messaging app so that it will be sent as an MMS. This allows your message to be viewed properly by the recipient.

Open your messaging app then go to Settings. Click on the part that says Input Mode then set it to Automatic. Take note that messages with an emoji will be sent as a picture message. Data charges may apply depending on your network.

S4 Pauses Playing Music After Each Song

Problem: Hi,I am experiencing issues with my S4. When playing some songs from my library the music player (Samsung music player) pauses after each song. Also experiencing similar issues attempting to play YouTube videos. Videos pause immediately after pressing play. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Solution: This might be a setting related issue, specifically the Motion Gestures setting. If this is enabled you will be able to control the phone by natural movement or by moving/touching the screen. Try turning this off by going to Settings – My Device – Motions and gestures.

If the issue still persists then the next thing you should check is if whether a third party app is causing this to happen. To do this you should boot your phone in Safe Mode.

If the issue does not occur in Safe Mode then find out what third party app is causing this and uninstall it.

S4 Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Does Not Tun On

Problem: Good Day, I seem to be having issues with my device, I am unable to access my wifi and bluetooth. Each time I try to turn them up, rather then getting a bright green display on the icon showing that I have successfully turn them on, I get a dark green display which in turns goes out itself. Please assist.

Solution: Try to check first if the Airplane Mode is enabled and if it is disable it. Net, reboot your phone since in most cases simply turning your phone off then on will resolve the issue.

If the problem still persists then connect your phone to a computer running on the latest version of Kies. What you will do is to check if there are any new software updates available for your phone. If there are any available you will be automatically prompted. Install the update in your phone.

If the issue still persists then you should do a factory reset. Take note that this procedure will delete your data so better make a backup first before proceeding.

S4 Echo During Voice Calls

Problem: Hello! I just bought a Galaxy S4 and people started saying that they hear an echo of their voice every time they call me or I call them. I unchecked the noise reduction option but nothing happened. Does anyone have a solution for this?

Solution: This might be a network related issue. Try placing a call in different areas ( office, mall, home) and see if the issue is the same. Try also to use another SIM in your phone an check if the echo problem is still present.

If you have a pair of headphones then plug it in the 3.5mm jack of your phone and then place a call. If the echo issue is gone then this might be a hardware related issue. Since this is a new phone you might want to bring this back to the store where you got it from and have it checked.

S4 Goes Into Silent/Vibrate Mode On Its Own

Problem: I have a galaxy S4 that will go into silent or vibrate on its own. This happens all the time now. I’ll set the ringer on hi or 75% and 10 minutes or an hour later I’ll notice that is on silent or vibrate. This started about a month ago and is really annoying, especially when I miss a call from my wife and she gets pissed at me. Thanks in advance for your help.

Solution: Does your phone have a case installed? If so try removing it as this may be the cause of the problem.

Another possibility to check is if whether a certain third party app that is installed in your phone is causing this problem. To check if this is the case you should start your phone in Safe Mode and then observe if the problem still occurs. If it doesn’t then you should find out what app is causing this and uninstall it.

You should also check the Motion Settings of your phone and disable the Palm touch to mute/pause feature.

S4 Mobile Data Missing From Notification Panel

Problem: Hi, My Samsung S4 AT&T SGH i337 was running OS 4.2.2 and in the notification panel there is a Mobile data tab you could use to switch on or off. However ,when my phone was upgraded to OS 4.4.2 , the mobile data tab was removed, is there anyway or any thing i could do to get the tab back in the notification panel? Thank you.

Solution: Here’s how to restore your mobile data toggle switch which is missing after the update. Go to the Settings option on your phone then tap on Display. Click on the option that says Notification Panel. Find the mobile data toggle switch under the Available Buttons space and drag it to the Notification Panel space. The mobile data toggle switch should now appear in the notification panel.

S4 Messages Not Sent

Problem: Hello, my galaxy s4 keep saying “message not sent” but all my messages are being sent. Please help me.

Solution: The first thing that you should do is to check if this is a network related issue. Try using another SIM in your phone or better yet try inserting your SIM in another phone then send a message. If the issue still occurs in both cases then this is a network related issue.

If the issue does not occur then your next step is to clear the cache and data of your messaging app. If you have any important messages stored in your phone you should back them up first before proceeding.

  • From the home screen, tap Apps.

  • Scroll to and tap Settings.

  • Tap More.

  • Tap Application manager.

  • Swipe left to view the All tab.

  • Scroll to and tap the Messaging application.

  • Tap Clear cache.

  • Tap Clear data.

Another factor to consider is that a certain third party app may be causing this issue. You should boot your phone in Safe Mode to check if this is the case. Try sending a text message while in Safe Mode and if you do not get the error message then the issue is most likely caused by a third party app. Find out what that app is and uninstall it.

S4 Can’t Send Text message With Picture Attachment

Problem: HELP! I just bought the above straight talk phone model SM-S975L. When I attempt to send a text to someone with an attached picture it sits there forever “sending” and never gets sent. I have no other issues when sending a text to anyone. I should advise you that the cell towers around my house are primarily Verison towers. The salesperson at Walmart advised me I may experience issues with the phone due to the fact this phone is an AT&T type phone? The old Samsung phone I had was the model SCH-S720C. I never had any problems with sending a text with attachments with this phone!

When I attempt to send the text with an attachment I get the following message “no signal found for mobile networks”. I am unclear on why the phone is looking for a network? I have tried sending the text with Wi-Fi on and off…same results. I usually have 3 bars …sometimes 2…. with my new phone. My old Samsung usually has 4 bars. I am just getting use to the phone but with the exception of the previously mentioned issue I love the phone.

I would not classify myself as a person who knows a lot about cell phones…I just want to utilize the various functions of this phone…if I can’t I have about 1 more week to return it. I really appreciate any assistance or direction you could give me regarding my issue. Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter. I should also advise you that I live in northern New York State, where various types of cell towers are limited…but straight talk does say that this phone should work where I live.

Solution: There are two requirements that must be met in order for your phone to receive and send picture messages. First, your phone should have an active data subscription. Second, your phone should have the proper APN settings.

The first requirements is easy to check since you should know what services your account has. Generally, if you can go online and check websites using a mobile data connection then you have an active data connection.

In most cases the reason why a phone can’t send a picture message is because of an incorrect APN setting. Since you mentioned that the phone is an AT&T phone and you are using it under the Straight Talk network then I think the APN settings have not been changed.

You can check the APN settings of your phone by going to Settings > Wireless Connections > More > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names. If in any field you see AT&T mentioned then these settings will not work with Straight Talk.

The best thing to do is to contact the technical support team of Straight Talk and have them assist you in getting the updated settings to your phone.

S4 Contact Number Entry Issue

Problem: Hello Droid Guy, I am hoping you can help me. I just purchased an S4, and I notice that sometimes when I am entering or editing contacts, the plus sign to add an additional telephone number vanishes. I am able to edit the existing number, but unable to add more. This happens about 75% of the time. Just to clarify, not the plus sign to add a new contact, but the plus sign next to the telephone numbers to add an additional number. Have you heard of this? And is there a fix for it? Thanks!

Solution: Have you checked if your phone is displaying the contact information stored in the SIM or in the phone memory? You can’t add phone numbers to a contact information stored in your SIM but you can if it is stored in your phone. Open Contacts, press Menu Button, then Contacts to Display, and choose Phone. Now try adding an additional phone number to a contact. It should work 100% of the time.
