We’ve heard reports of Samsung’s ChatOn service shutting down before, but here’s official confirmation coming straight from the horse’s mouth. The company has announced the closure of this service, at least in the global markets starting February 2015. However, customers in the U.S. will be able to use this service as usual, although we’re not sure for how long.
Samsung makes it clear that users will be able to store all their personal data before the service goes off. Here’s what the company had to say in its official statement – “Under changes in the services operation policy, ChatOn will be closed as of 9 a.m. on Feb. 1, 2015. The move came in line with efforts to meet the changing demands in the market and provide differentiated services to users, focusing on other areas such as health and mobile commerce.”
This move hasn’t taken anybody by surprise given the rough period Samsung is seeing over the past few months. ChatOn has barely seen an increase in marketshare as the likes of WhatsApp, WeChat and Line continue to dominate the instant messaging market.
