According to an executive from Karbonn, the second generation Android One smartphones will arrive sometime soon next year, possibly by the first quarter. Karbonn is one of Google’s Android One launch partners and this revelation reaffirms that Google has long term plans to take Android One further, even though the initial response for the series has been relatively lukewarm.
The executive failed to provide hardware details on this upcoming Android One handset, but needless to say it will follow the same principles as the first gen models. Android One has only been available in India up until now, so we’re hoping that the second wave will probably include other global regions as well.
With a price tag of just $100, Google wanted Android One to tap into the budget segment in India. But the availability of other low end offerings from the likes of Xiaomi and Motorola made it tougher for Google to penetrate the market. It will be interesting to see how the second generation models will fare, and if Google has learnt from its mistakes.
