Sony Xperia Z4 series could feature an all new design and improved hardware

Sony Xperia Z3

The Sony Xperia Z4 is under four months away from launch if rumors are anything to go by. We’re now hearing reports about this alleged successor of the Xperia Z3 indicating that it will feature a new display and an refreshed design. Sony has been using 1080p panels since the Xperia Z, so it was only a matter of time before the display was bumped up. Although there’s no mention of the display resolution being increased, it’s natural to expect the upcoming flagship to sport a 2K resolution display, going by the competition.

There is also word on the Xperia Z4 Compact and the Xperia Z4 Tablet which will reportedly receive display resolutions upgrades to 1080p and 2K respectively. Sony is also rumored to be launching the Xperia Z4 Ultra after a gap of 18 months, which will allegedly have the same 6.4 inch display. I’m personally curious to see how Sony changes the design of the smartphones which have remained practically identical over the past three or four iterations. The Xperia Z3 tried to change it somewhat with its slightly re-positioned front facing speakers, but it follows the same Sony design philosophy that we’ve seen over the past couple of years.

  1. Sticking to a design philosophy (here: prominent rectangles, form follows function, valuable materials, circular power button as the distinguishing highlight, brand recognition) and functional quality beyond doubt helps building customer satisfaction and brand awareness. I am quite happy that my Xperia Z still looks up to date after years, I also bought a Z Ultra a year after the Z. Sony is exactly on the right track here. Note that I am normally a die hard brand agnostic and not a Sony fan at all.
