S5 screen goes all black
Problem: Hello. So I have an international version of the new Samsung Galaxy S5. I plugged it in to charge, mix way through charging, I unplugged it and stayed playing a game. A few minutes later, the screen went black. I tried a variety of things to remedy this, but no luck. I removed the battery, tried going into reset mode with volume up, home button, and power, removed SIM and SD, then I followed a video on you tube that had me remove the battery, hold the power button for one minute, and then leave the battery out for 5 minutes. The phone vibrates, the blue led turns on, the two lights on the bottom flash, and then all is dark. But I am able to raise and lower the volume with the buttons. Please help. Troubleshooting: Hi Richard. A powerful device like Samsung Galaxy S5 is not supposed to encounter this problem but apparently, there are some users out there with the same symptoms. We did some research on our own because we have not catalogued this issue yet under our S5 troubleshooting guide. A black screen on an S5 can be caused by a few things including a faulty battery. Have you tried using another battery? There’s no telling when a smartphone battery can go bad so it’s best if we can try to use another one as this step can effectively help us isolate the root cause.
If the battery is okay though, we may be looking at a defective phone in the least. While we’ve heard of some rogue apps that cause black screen on a smartphone, it looks like that’s not the case here. The thing is, you will also be unable to determine if an app is the culprit as you cannot perform a Safe mode on your phone.
Our preferred solution should be to get this phone checked by a Samsung-certified technician so the screen assembly can be checked for damage or loose circuits.
Have you considered getting a replacement phone instead? While not convenient, a new phone can obviously give you the desired phone condition you so deserve. Try calling your provider or Samsung to demand for a new unit.
S5 cannot install game to an SD card

Troubleshooting: Hi Esther. Are you trying to download a game from Google Play Store? Assuming that you are logged in to your Google account and the game is compatible with your phone, we cannot see any logic why you are receiving this error message. As far as we know, Samsung no longer allows games to be installed in a microSD card so there is no logical connection why your phone is receiving this message. If users want to move their game files to an SD card, they must root their S5 first and install Xposed Framework. We have a tutorial page on how to move large game files to an SD card but I don’t think this can help you at this point.
Can you give us more details on what game you are trying to download in a separate email? We will update this post once we receive your response or even create a new post so other readers will be enlightened as well.
Photos becoming “unsupported files” when using Camera and Gallery apps
Problem: Hi. I have a problem. Every time I use the “Camera” and “Gallery” apps, the photos and videos become “unsupported files” and the thumbnails turn into an unsupported image/graphic. I lost a bunch of images I took already due to this problem. However, downloaded images/videos are fine, just the ones I take using the “Camera” app. Is there any way you can help me resolve this problem? Currently using: a no-name 64Gb micro SD. Troubleshooting: Hi Mark. When you say “Camera”, are you referring to the built-in camera app from Samsung and not any third party camera apps? If you are, then there’s no reason why the photos get corrupted unless there’s an issue with the storage device you are using. Since you seem to be using a 64GB SD card as the default storage every time you take a picture, can you try to isolate the issue by switching to the internal memory? Doing so help us determine if you have a bad SD card.
Questions regarding S5’s fingerprint scanner, camera app, and Bluetooth
Problem: Hi. I find the S5 has a few shortcomings with regards to standard items.
The camera ends up with many blurred pictures compared with the 3Gs I had for years. Would have thought it would be much more advanced than the original iPhone.
The fingerprint reader I already know is crap but where does it read the print from? The button or the screen?
Also how come I can’t have the camera available on the unlock screen like in my 3Gs. It says it can do it but there is no menu choice to turn it on.
I have a Bluetooth speaker/microphone which uses some app to do handsfree calling. It is crap at understanding what I say. Yet the Google Voice understands any voice I use. How can I get Bluetooth device to use Google Voice instead of its own default? — John

We’re glad to know that you had a wonderful time using your older iPhones before but to compare them to the capabilities of a Samsung S5 is like comparing a propeller-driven plane to a more advanced jet fighters of the day. Don’t get us wrong. We definitely agree that older iPhones were the best a few years back but to compare them to a Samsung Galaxy S5 now is unfair.
The S5 packs one of the best camera technology for a smartphone today. The reason why you may be getting blurred pictures when using the camera app may be due to the settings of the app itself. We admit that some of the settings may not be that intuitive and requires more advanced understanding and lingo of photography world, but in general, the camera default settings should already be a good starting point. We suggest that you check out our tutorial page on how to tweak your S5 camera settings for a more enjoyable experience.
As regards your question on how the S5’s fingerprint scanner work, it is best to start on what the scanner really does. Like Apple’s iPhone 5S which houses a fingerprint reader within the home button, Samsung’s S5 has the scanner located in the home button although it works differently. An S5 requires a user to swipe vertically across the home button while Apple’s iPhone unlocks the device by pressing and holding the home button.
Users can additionally use the fingerprint scanner to act as passwords to open apps like PayPal. Thus, it’s function is not just limited to unlocking the phone like what the iPhone’s scanner does.
Now, for your third point regarding a Bluetooth headset using Google Voice to detect what you’re saying, we’re not sure if that’s even possible. All we know is that after KitKat 4.4.2 was released, any Bluetooth headset will now use Google Voice Dialer to, say, dial a number.
One user from a forum we visited suggested to uninstall the update for Google Search under installed apps section of the application manager then disable the automatic update feature for it to prevent it from updating again in the future. This allows S-Voice to take the place of Google Voice Dialer however, so depending on your preference, you may want to do that.

It also appears that you’re the only one, or may be the first, to report the trouble out of thousands of readers reaching out to us every week. The cause of the problem can range from a bug in your network to a messaging app you may be using, to a phone malfunction.
It would be very helpful for us if you can provide more information about the problem like the name of your provider and providers of the numbers you are sending texts to. Telling us what third party messaging app you may be using can be helpful to give us more leads to possible cause.
At this point, all you can do is to temporarily disable your messaging app (if it’s a third party app) and delete some old long threads to help ensure that your system has enough storage space for incoming and outgoing messages.
You can also perform a Safe mode test on your S5 so you can replicate the problem while the phone runs only the first party apps provided by Android and Samsung.
S5 keeps forgetting Wi-Fi password

Troubleshooting: Hi Aamir. Are you using a third party Wi-Fi app or an app from your provider like the Sprint Connections Optimizer app or My Verizon app? If you are, then most probably the root cause is this type of app. To help you narrow down the cause, try connecting to your Wi-Fi using only the default Wi-Fi icon and observe how the phone behaves for a few hours. You may also want to perform a Safe Mode before yoiu connect to your Wi-Fi. Being in Safe Mode means the phone is only using the apps provided after it left the factory, which most of the time works fine because they have been quality checked properly.
If these steps won’t help, you can also force your phone to constantly connect to your Wi-Fi even when in sleep mode. Just follow the steps below:
- Tap the Menu key on Home screen
- On the pop up menu select Settings
- Here make sure that the slider next to the Wi-Fi option shows ON
- Tap Wi-Fi
- Tap the Menu key then select Advanced
- Tap Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep
- On the pop up menu select Always. When the dot indicator shows green means this option is selected.
- Now the phone’s Wi-Fi will remain connected to the Wi-Fi network even if your phone is asleep
S5 showing “Check Battery Cover” error
Problem: I received this S5 as an advanced gift from husband who is working abroad last week. I love the phone as it has a bigger screen compared to my old iPhone4. However, I am getting this annoying error almost every time now. I think the problem started when I inserted my 32GB microSD card. The phone started to give me “Check Battery Cover” error. Thinking that the battery cover may not be positioned properly, I applied pressure to all the sides, making sure that the cover is in place as it should be. After I turned the phone on, I received the same error immediately. It’s crazy because I’m 100% sure that the back cover is properly sealed. I’ve checked it several times but the damned phone keeps on giving me the stupid error. Obviously, I became very frustrated that I consider asking my husband to have it replaced. The thing I’m worried though is that I may have to wait for weeks to get a new one because it was purchased in Germany. Is there a way to fix this without getting a replacement? Troubleshooting: Hi Mary Kate. This looks like a known issue for Samsung S5. Based on some forums on the web, the problem can be resolved by just firmly pressing the SD card in its slot so the phone will recognize it properly. While we can’t see the connection between this error and a loose SD card, it’s probably worth giving it a try before you consider getting a replacement. Honestly, we have no idea how to resolve this error other than telling you that it might be a hardware issue. A software bug may also trigger the phone to give you the pop up message but we think getting a new phone is the best way to a solution.
S5 getting “Warning: Camera failed” error
Problem: I’ve been using my Samsung Galaxy S5 for quite some time now and this is the first time that I encountered “Warning: Camera failed” error when I try to use the camera app. I’m clueless about resolving the issue as this is my first Android phone. Troubleshooting: Hello Noreen. First off, this problem is not exclusive to an S5. The error you’re getting is just an indicator that your app won’t load either because there’s an issue with the app itself, or that there’s a hardware component failure on your phone. Others factors can come into play so we outlined a series of steps below to help you identify the real cause of the problem.
- Restarting the phone is the best solution
- If restart doesn’t help, go to the App Manager then select Force Stop, Clear Cache and tap Clear Data
- Uninstall or remove any third-party camera or flashlight app which you’ve installed earlier before the problem occurred
- Use the phone’s internal storage for camera captures instead of the microSD card as the latter may not be fast enough to support the processing speed
- Turn off the device then reboot into Recovery mode. Select Wipe Cache Partition by navigating using the volume keys and pressing the power button. After that, select Reboot System Now.
- Perform a factory reset if all of the above fails. Make sure to backup all your data files and customizations before confirming a reset.
- If the problem continues, the camera itself may be faulty. Please secure a replacement from your provider, retailer, or Samsung.
S5 touchscreen becomes unresponsive
Problem: I don’t know what happened to my phone but after leaving it connected to a charger overnight, the screen has become unresponsive. The other buttons are still working when I touch anything on the screen, nothing happens. I can no longer swipe so I think the touchscreen has become bad. Troubleshooting: Hi Jasmine. A non-responsive touchscreen is usually caused by a water damage or hardware failure especially if the phone has been dropped. Please check the steps below to help identify and resolve the underlying cause of this problem.
- If you have a screen protector on your phone, verify if it’s interfering with the touchscreen. We know you didn’t mention a screen protector in your problem description but this step applies if you have it installed. Sometimes, a thick screen protector can lessen the pressure of your fingers when touching the screen, affecting the screen’s performance. Try to remove the protector and see if this resolves the problem. The next time you want to use a screen protector, make sure to use only a Samsung Galaxy S5 compatible one. You also want to ensure that the screen protector is not dirty by cleaining it with a microfiber cloth.
- Do a soft reset. This step will delete temporary files that may be affecting how the touchscreen perform better. To do this, just do the following:
- Remove the battery. After 30 seconds, reinsert the battery.
- Press and hold the Power key to turn your Samsung Galaxy S III back on.
- Test your device to see if the issue is resolved.
- Check the settings. If you can get the touchscreen to work at some point, try to check the touch sensitivity settings under Settings>Display.
