Huawei took us all by surprise when it announced that American units of the Ascend Mate 2 smartphone will not receive the Android 4.4 update. This obviously led to a massive outcry from the owners. However, it seems like Huawei has had a change of heart with regards to its update policy. The company has now announced that it will start rolling out the Android 5.0 Lollipop update to American units of the Ascend Mate 2 before the first half of 2015.
This means that the smartphone will be making the jump from Android 4.3 Jelly Bean to Android 5.0, leapfrogging Android 4.4 altogether. We’re not sure what led to the sudden change of heart, but it seems like the public outrage from device owners had a part to play.
The Ascend Mate 2 made its entry in the U.S. this June carrying a price tag of $299.99. It was touted as a budget LTE handset with a not so flattering hardware specs sheet. However, the company’s decision to issue the KitKat update to the global version but leave out the American public did not go down well with users. This new announcement will certainly make up for it, although we think there’s a lot of waiting to do before we get to see the latest version of Android reach devices.
