Corning has just announced the successor to the Gorilla Glass 3 display panel, promising double the durability and sturdiness. We can expect Gorilla Glass 4 to be used in most 2015 flagships, so it won’t take long for Gorilla Glass 3 to be forgotten.
To make us understand the durability and strength of the panel in simple terms, Corning has uploaded a video showing how a smartphone with Gorilla Glass 4 fares when being handled by a bunch of gorillas. In typical Corning fashion, the new panel is expected to best everything else in the market.
While it’s still not as durable as sapphire glass display which is rumored to be used in next year’s iPhone, the Gorilla Glass 4 is said to perform visibly better in terms of durability. Corning has already started shipping out Gorilla Glass 4 to its manufacturing partners with hope to have devices featuring the new panel by the end of this year. But since we’re already approaching the end of 2014, it seems like we might have to wait until 2015 to get a closer look at devices with the new panel.
