At this point, the possibility of Sony ever updating the Xperia SP to Android 4.4 KitKat wasn’t something owners of the device were hopeful of, but the Japanese manufacturer has now officially confirmed that the Xperia SP will stay on Android 4.3 for its life cycle. Sony didn’t make an official announcement, but the support page for the Xperia SP has been changed to mention that Android 4.3 will be the final build for the phone.
The Xperia SP was launched in May last year with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and was later updated to Android 4.3. Sony had initially said that it was considering whether the phone will be updated to KitKat, but since February, the company was mum on the matter. Given the mid-range nature of the Xperia SP, it’s not surprising it isn’t getting another major upgrade, since two or more major updates are usually reserved for flagship phones, but owners of the device are nonetheless going to be rather disappointed, if only because Sony took so long to confirm the bad news.
