Samsung Galaxy S3 Problems, Errors, Questions and Solutions [Part 38]

Hey guys, welcome to this week’s edition of our Samsung Galaxy S3 Problems series. It is one of the longest running support series on our site and this post is the 38th part. I addressed 5 problems, answered 4 questions and provided fixes to 4 errors, so feel free to skim through it to find out if your issues were addressed.

Problems

Galaxy S3 Refuses to Lock and Randomly Shuts Down

Problem: Hi there! I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 and have recently encountered some issues. A day ago my phone starting refusing to lock and randomly shutting down. I thought this may be because the phone overheated or something and I let everything cool down but no such luck.

Everything is up to date on my phone and I have found no rouge apps. I do have cyanogen mod on my phone but no one else in my family is experiencing these problems even though they all have the mod too. I am in college and really not trying to go home for the weekend to get a new phone so is there any solutions you can think of? Thanks! — Nikki

Solution: Hi Nikki. I, myself, am a fan of CyanogenMod as two of phones run on it. While I’m confident that mods being released for public use are stable, there is always a possibility that they have bugs. So, try to check if the team released a new version of the mod and install it. If there’s no update, then I suggest you clear the dalvik cache. If that didn’t work, proceed with factory reset.

Clearing Dalvik Cache

  1. Turn off the Samsung Galaxy S3.
  2. Enter Recovery Mode by holding down the Power, Volume Down and Home buttons altogether.
  3. When you get the black screen with the Recovery Mode message, let go off the keys.
  4. Use the Volume key to navigate your way on the options. Use it to highlight Advanced in the given choices. Press the Home key to select it.
  5. Choose Wipe Dalvik Cache using the same method in the previous step.
  6. When the confirmation message appears, just scroll down until you reach the option that says, “Yes – Wipe Dalvik Cache”. Then select it.
  7. After that, select the “Go Back” option.
  8. Choose Wipe Data/ Factory Reset.
  9. Again, you will encounter a confirmation message wherein you have to select “Yes”.
  10. Upon seeing the “Data Wipe Complete” message on the bottom of your screen, choose “Wipe Cache Partition” and confirm your action by selecting “Yes”.
  11. When you see the message that says “Complete”, choose Reboot and wait until your phone starts normally.

Galaxy S3 Won’t Turn On

Problem: Hey, so I tried all the steps you mentioned in you helpful blog—even tried a friend’s battery. No luck. How To Fix A Galaxy S3 That Won’t Turn On [Troubleshooting Guide]

Here’s the issue. Obviously the phone won’t start, no matter how long I hold the power button. What does get it to light up is when I remove the battery and put it back into place. Then the phone will light up with SAMSUNG then move to the Galaxy S3 logo but only for a brief time—then it goes dead. That’s all I can get out of the phone. Does this sounds common to you? — Kim

Solution: If the phone refused to boot up in Safe Mode and Recovery Mode and still won’t boot up completely with different battery, it’s time you had it checked by a technician. There is a possibility that the USB charge port was damaged interrupting the normal flow of current from the battery. My point is, if you’ve already exhausted every possible troubleshooting procedure and the phone still refuses to boot up, then there’s nothing you can do about it already unless you know how to fix a smartphone with possible hardware issue.

Boost Mobile Galaxy S3 APN Settings

Problem: Can’t receive MMS from different carriers. Just says “download”. Tried to change “APN” but no such option exists in my phone, only “VPN”. How do I fix this?

Solution: I don’t think you’re at the right screen. Try this:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap the Connections tab.
  4. Tap More networks.
  5. Tap Mobile networks.
  6. Tap Access Point Names.

I’m not sure if these data are still correct but try using the following as your APN:

  • APN: Boost_Mobile
  • Proxy:
  • Port:
  • User Name: Boost_Mobile
  • Password:
  • Server:
  • MMSC: http://mm.myboostmobile.com
  • MMS Proxy: 68.28.31.7
  • MMS Port: 80
  • MCC: 310
  • MNC: 00
  • APN Type:

In case you can’t still receive MMS after making changes, call Boost Mobile and ask for the correct APN for your phone.

Stop Gmail Messages From Coming In

Problem: Hi there hope you can help me I have a Samsung S3 mini and I want to turn off receiving gmail on it as it is too noisy through the night and keeps waking me up and I have to keep my phone on loud as I do need to receive calls if need to. Thanks, Ted.

Solution: There are two easy ways to do this. If you don’t care about emails that have been downloaded to your phone and don’t want to receive emails anymore, then I suggest you disable Gmail app from the Application Manager. If, however, you’ve setup your Gmail account on the stock email app, then clear its cache and data to remove your account. That way, no emails will come in.

But since your main concern is the noise of the notification tone when a message comes in, there is another way to address that without deleting your emails or removing your Google account–to turn off Notification. Just follow these steps:

  • From any Home screen, tap Apps.
  • Tap Gmail.
  • Tap the Menu key and then tap Settings.
  1. Tap your email address.
  2. To turn off, tap Notifications to clear the check box.

Galaxy S3 Screen Flickers

Problem: My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S3. I have the issue of a flashing screen at times. If I make a phone call to a business, put the phone on speaker, bring up the key pad, the automated voice asks that I press 1, or 2, or whatever, the screen starts flashing so fast I’m unable to make any selections. My daughter has the same phone and at times she has the problem too.

Solution: The last time I saw this issue in action it was caused by dirt corroding the proximity sensor. The corrosion was light and didn’t completely cover the sensor. When the phone is near the users face, the screen turns off but when the sensor detected some light the screen flickers. It’s because the proximity sensor is supposed to turn the screen on when the phone is nowhere near the user’s face but since there is dirt that obscures it, the sensor goes crazy.

The solution is to clean the hole where the proximity sensor is. A weak blast of compressed air may remove the dirt. There’s also a workaround; set the phone so the screen stays on while in a call.

  1. Launch the “Phone” App.
  2. Tap on Menu Key and open “Call Settings”.
  3. Find “Turn off screen during calls” and make sure it is disabled.

Galaxy S3 Battery Problem

Question: Hello The battery of my s3 inflated some week ago and my phone loses energy in a wink from 20% when I do not use it .when wifi is running at 20%. My phone hangs and when I remove the battery and I surrender and I put the charger it tells me 0%. Should I change my battery? Thank you.

Answer: Yes, buying a new battery is your best bet. I also suggest you don’t overcharge the old one because batteries explode based on my experience. So, as soon as possible buy a new one and avoid using the damaged battery.

Galaxy S3 Picture Quality

Problem: Hello sir, I have a problem with my S3. When I take a photo with flash, the photo doesn’t look that good. It feels like it was captured a bit late, after the flash has gone off. Doesn’t look bright at all. Photos taken during the day time in good sunlight are very good.

I have attached a photo which was taken when the flash was on. Please help me in fixing this problem. Thanks & regards, Ashwin.

Answer: Based on the picture you attached to your email, the problem was with the lighting–the flash reflects back that’s why the sensor adjusted its focus and picture brightness based on the amount of light it received.

I’m no photography expert so I can’t provide you tips on how to capture pictures with best quality. I thought this is a camera problem but since you said the pictures are good when you snap them with good lighting so I there’s no issue with your phone.

While your phone comes with an LED flash, it isn’t enough to capture good pictures in low-light environment.

Galaxy S3 Phone Call Issue

Question: Here’s another problem to solve and add to your great library of SGS3 issues.

I placed a call and put it on speaker phone. I then changed to another app to get some information to give the person I was calling. I got his voicemail so I left him a message (while reading information from the other app). When I was finished I changed back to the phone app…

The phone showed as “hung up” (on-hook)—you know, the green phone icon. I presume the voicemail system hung up on me when I stopped talking so I exited the phone app, turned off the screen and started to pocket my phone when it said “If you’re done with your message, press 1 to hang up, 2 to delete and re-record…” and the rest of that regular instruction spiel.

I went back to the phone app and sure enough it was showing as being disconnected, hung up.

It’s the standard phone app for Android 4.4.2. Any experienced this? Is there a fix? Thanks, Dave.

Answer: If it kept happening to your phone, then it might be bug. However, if it happened just once or twice, it can be considered a glitch. Bugs can be fixed by updates for as long as the problem was acknowledged by Samsung or your service provider that has control over the firmware update. For glitches, there’s no ultimate solution because there’s no pattern for us to know what really triggers it. But rest assured I will research on this issue to find out if there are other owners out there who may have experienced the same. Thanks for letting us know about this.

Errors

“Unfortunately, Internet has stopped”

Error: Hi droid guy. I got a problem with my Samsung Galaxy S3. Every time I launch the browser I get the error message “Unfortunately, Internet has stopped” and it started just a couple of days ago. I though it was just a minor glitch and could be fixed on its own but I was wrong. Now, even when I click on the link from Facebook, I keep getting the same error message. Do you know how to fix this? Thanks. — Anita

Solution: This problem is annoying but it’s not serious; it’s just a glitch in the Internet app. The procedure below can sure fix it:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Touch Settings and then Application Manager.
  3. Tap left or right to display contents of the All tab.
  4. Make sure not a single app is labeled ‘Disabled’ unless, of course, you disabled it on purpose and are pretty sure it has nothing to do with this problem.
  5. After that, scroll to and tap the Internet app.
  6. Tap the Force Close button first.
  7. Then tap the Clear Cache button.
  8. Lastly, tap the Clear Data button. (Please note you will lose your bookmarks and browsing history when you do this).
  9. Tap OK to confirm.
  10. Launch Internet again and see if you’re still getting the same error message.
  11. If so, try wiping the cache partition. If this doesn’t help and you don’t want to perform a Factory Reset, the workaround is to use other browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Galaxy S3 Can’t Get Out Of Safe Mode

Error: Hi guys. I just want to know how I can bring my phone back to normal. Yesterday, my Samsung Galaxy S3 just turned itself off and when I turned it on, there is a text in the lower left corner of the screen that says “Safe Mode.” I tried to reboot it many time but it keeps coming back to safe mode. How can I boot it out of safe mode? Thanks.

Solution: An app may have crashed and caused conflicts within the phone’s core functions. To prevent further complications, Android boots in safe mode. Since the phone can’t boot up normally, try this procedure…

  1. With your phone still on, open the back panel and remove the battery. That’s what you call power-shocking and it often helps.
  2. Without the battery removed, press and hold the Power button of your phone for about 30 seconds. This will discharge stored electricity in the components.
  3. Place the battery back, then close the back panel.
  4. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home, and Power buttons.
  5. When the phone vibrates, release the Power button but continue holding the other two until Android System Recovery screen appears.
  6. Use the Volume Down button to highlight ‘wipe cache partition’ and press the Power button to select it.
  7. The phone will reboot automatically after the cache partition was wiped out. Otherwise, highlight ‘reboot system now’ and press the Power button to initiate reboot.

“Network terminated because internet connection is slow”

Error: I received an update on the Galaxy S3 and it seems to have messed up my phone’s ability to connect to my home network as I always get “Network terminated because internet connection is slow” error message. I honestly don’t know how to fix this problem so if you have any idea what needs to be done, I would be grateful if you told me. Thanks. — Robin

Solution: First of all, make sure your home network is stable. It will be helpful if you reset your network equipment first. After that, follow this procedure:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap the Connections tab.
  4. If necessary, tap the Wi-Fi Switch to On. The Switch moves right and turns green.
  5. Tap Wi-Fi.
  6. Tap the Menu key, then choose Advanced Settings.
  7. Un-check ‘Auto network switch’ option.
  8. Now try to connect to your network.

“The process android.process.acore has stopped working”

Error: After an update my Galaxy S3 became so sluggish and I was getting errors here and there. After a couple of days all errors were gone except for this one: “The process android.process.acore has stopped working.” The phone is still very slow and there are even times when it won’t respond for a few seconds like an app would take 5 to 10 seconds to open. I’m a noob when it comes to technology, although I can follow instructions. So, if you know a way to fix this, that would be great.

Solution: There is one procedure I want you to try. It has been proven to solve this specific error message:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Touch Settings and then Application Manager.
  3. Tap the Menu key and choose Reset app preferences.
  4. Confirm your action.

Most of the time this problem is caused by a pre-installed app (usually one of the Gapps) that crashed. If the error message was gone but the phone is still sluggish, you have no other option but to perform factory reset.
