Known for its Tegra series of chipsets, NVIDIA has filed a patent infringement suit against Qualcomm and Samsung over issues related to the GPU. NVIDIA is including the freshly announced Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge to the list of infringing products.
Speaking on the matter, the CEO of NVIDIA Jen-Hsun Huang said – “They’re using our technology for free in their devices today and they’re shipping an enormous number of devices.” The company has filed separate complaints through the U.S. International Trade Commission and the U.S. District Court in Delaware, so this is quite a serious allegation against the two manufacturers. Samsung has mentioned that it will contest the allegations leveled by NVIDIA while Qualcomm is yet to comment on the matter. The allegations are pertaining to Samsung’s Exynos chipsets and Qualcomm’s popular Snapdragon SoCs.
NVIDIA was expected to be licensing certain GPU related patents to manufacturers, but neither Samsung nor Qualcomm have officially inked an agreement with the company. It could take months or even years for this courtroom battle to reach its conclusion while the internet has a front row seat.
