Google was expected to be unifying Hangouts and Voice in one place so as to make it easier for the users to access both apps. It has now come to light that the change is taking place already. According to Android Police, it is still a work in progress as there are reportedly some issues noticeable, which is expected as it’s still quite early in the day.
Once users have finished setting it up, the messages and other notifications will only appear on the Hangouts app, making the standalone Voice app obsolete. User voicemails and voice SMS will appear much like any other message on Hangouts, thus maintaining familiarity. Messages directed to your Google Voice account will have a GV tag at the bottom of the text. So overall, if you have Hangouts as your default SMS app, having support for Google Voice makes it even better.
The feature should be rolling out immediately on Hangouts, so make sure you keep an eye out for any changes. The update is only applicable for American customers, so you’re not in luck if you live outside the U.S.
