According to a report from The Information, Amazon is in final stages of talks with the makers of Twitch for a potential acquisition. This comes a few weeks after Google was believed to have offered $1 billion to acquire the popular gaming service. But for some reason which is yet unknown, talks seem to have fallen apart. There is no disclosure on how close Amazon and Twitch are to inking this deal but it is said that it’s at a “late stage“. And given Amazon’s continued interest in entering the gaming segment, this move seems logical.
The recently launched Fire TV had a gaming element to it with multiple big ticket developers expected to be supporting the console. So the acquisition of a game streaming and broadcast service like Twitch would go a long way in making Amazon a serious player in the video streaming arena. We’ll keep a keen eye on this and update you with any new developments on the potential acquisition. At the moment though, it seems like Google is out of the running to acquire Twitch.
Update: Amazon has officially signed the deal to acquire Twitch for an estimated $970 million according to reports from The Wall Street Journal. The two companies expect the deal to be completed sometime during the second half of the year.
Do you think Amazon will be better suited for the acquisition of Twitch or was Google a better candidate? Let us know below.
