A new leak has revealed the existence of the Sony Xperia Z2a smartphone which appears to be a plastic variant of the recently launched Xperia Z2. Apart from the change in body construction, the smartphone is also going to be slightly smaller than the Xperia Z2, although most of the other hardware will remain unchanged. It is said that the device will break cover in Taiwan next month with no word on availability elsewhere at the moment.
Hardware wise, the Xperia Z2a is expected to pack the same 20.7-megapixel Sony Exmor RS sensor on the back, 3GB of RAM as well as the Snapdragon 801 SoC. However, the display is slightly smaller at 5 inches although the resolution is unchanged at 1080p. Also different is the front facing camera which is a 0.3-megapixel sensor here while the Xperia Z2 utilized a 2.2-megapixel sensor. The device is water and dust resistant just like its bigger sibling.
The battery on the Xperia Z2a is 3,000 mAh in comparison to the 3,200 mAh unit on the Xperia Z2 which shouldn’t make much of a difference as there’s less screen area to cover on this smartphone given the shrink in size. Android 4.4.2 KitKat is expected to be running by default here, along with the usual suite of Sony features that we saw on the Xperia Z2.
