Galaxy S2 Does Not Turn On, How To Retrieve Photos

Problem: Hi, I’ve been searching the web for the last 3 days looking for answers to my problem and came across your post.  I looked through several of your Q/A comments but nothing seem to fully resolve my issue. I am praying you can help me. I was on my phone with a Candy Crush running and it suddenly froze.  I gave it several minutes and it did not respond to anything.  I tried going back to the home screen, turning it off, etc… I then pulled out the battery and put it back in.  At this point the phone didn’t turn on at all.  I tried recharging it but nothing…it will not turn on.  The back was hot and it actually had been getting hot every now and then. I tried holding the power and volume buttons and nothing works.  My ONLY concern is my photos.  I thought they were being saved to the micro SD card but the card shows blank.  The folks at the Sprint store said that unless I changed some setting they were all going to the phone.  I told him I recall saving photos from text messages to the card but whatever. There are photos of my son when he was born and his first birthday and my daughter’s first day of kindergarten, etc… so I can’t tell you how desperate I am to get the photos.  At this point I could careless about the phone or the contacts I only want the photos. So my question is there a way to retrieve the photos if the phone won’t turn on.  I tried hooking it up to my computer and the phone isn’t being recognized. If you have any ideas or can direct me to someone who can work magic I would be ever so grateful.

Solution: A lot of people have been in this situation with their smartphones. The phone dies and doesn’t turn on and then a problem with retrieving data stored on the device happens. Unless data has been stored on the SD card then it will be difficult to retrieve. Connecting the S2 to a laptop is a right move on your part but since the phone isn’t recognized there’s a big chance it is a hardware problem.

What I could suggest is to try to borrow a similar battery as the one used by your device, use it on your S2 and see if it turns on.  If it does turn on then do a backup immediately.  If it doesn’t turn on then try connecting the device to your laptop and see if it is recognized. If it still doesn’t get recognized then even if you try to send it to an authorized repair center there is still no assurance that the data can be recovered.

Galaxy S2 Deletes Apps In SD Card After Reboot

Problem: Hey I read your articles about Samsung i9100 (S2) problems and their solutions and I must say you guys are doing an excellent job supporting older devices. Anyways, my issue is that my i9100 deletes all the apps after a reboot that I transfer to the internal SD card via the apps setting option. Is there any way that can stop this from happening as I constantly lose apps on my internal SD card after every reboot my device faces? I’m anxiously waiting for your reply for a solution as this problem is driving me nuts. I’ve tried numerous roms (Stock as well as custom), yet the issue remains. Thanks in advance!

Solution: We are glad that you find our solutions to common Android problems useful. Anyway, regarding your concern about apps getting deleted after a reboot this could be a problem with the SD card itself. You mentioned that you have tried numerous ROMs and still the issue remains. Try to replace your SD card and see if the issue still exists. Make sure to get an SD card from a known brand and make sure it is authentic.

Galaxy S2 Battery Issues

Problem: It takes forever to charge, tells me that it is 100%, then 5 mins later tells me it is at 25, 35, or even less percentage of full drains (on a good day)within a couple hours…i must constantly plug it in, even though i painstakingly ‘seasoned’ it when battery was new…its only 3 months old….help

Solution: A battery that takes a long time to charge then drains quickly is a sign that there’s something wrong with it or that an app in your S2 is causing this behavior.

To check if it is a third-party app causing this problem try to boot your device to safe mode. In this mode only the basic system software will be loaded.

To initiate Safe Mode

  • Power off the device.
  • Press and hold the Power/Lock key for one or two seconds to turn on the device.
  • When the Samsung logo displays, press and hold the Volume down key until the lock screen displays.
  • When the Lock screen is displayed, Safe mode is displayed in the lower-left corner of the screen.
  • To exit Safe mode, restart your device

Once in Safe Mode try to charge your device and observe its behavior. If it now operates normally then you will have to uninstall some of the third-party apps you have on your device which may be causing this problem.

If the battery still drains quickly then try replacing it with a new one. Chances are the battery that you are using right now has a problem.

Samsung Galaxy S2 Stuck In Boot

Problem: Hi there, Before I take my phone to a tech, I thought I would try my luck with you. My phone has been over heating as of late and sometimes even turning off. I have always just taken the battery out and left it off for a bit and it has always come right. Today after taking some photos, the phone switched off by itself. It had a full battery and was slightly warm. So I left it off for a couple of hours but now since turning it back on, My phone dosent get past the Samsung logo  and is just continually playing?? I have done the cache wipe and rebooted it, but it just restarts and plays the logo over again. Will I have to reset the phone and lose all my photos? Or can I take it to a tech who can save my photos and fix the phone?? Ive hooked it up to the usb and Kies and my lappy does not register with the phone. Its 2 years old and any help would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards

Solution: Basically what we have here is an S2 that is stuck on boot loop. Since you have already wiped the cache and tried connecting it to a laptop with no effect, it’s difficult to recover the photos at this point. Is the Kies software you are using the latest version? I could also suggest using a different USB cable when connecting your S2 to the laptop and see if it gets recognized. If not, then I’m afraid you will have to bring our device to an authorized service center.

Galaxy S2 Wi-Fi Issue

Problem: Hello. I saw your article on the samsung s2, and I was wondering if you could help me with an issue. Anytime I turn on my wifi it doesnt fully boot up. The icon gets half lit in the drop down status bar, and the settings wifi area just says its starting up. I have found a sort of solution. I rotate my phone sideways and bend it, as if to snap it in half, I know it sounds wierd. But it usually connects. Sometimes if I let the pressure go, it goes back to searching again.  I suapect the wifi antenna is loose. If so how do I replace it? Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Solution: Before we can rule a hardware issue lets first see if it is a software concern. I’m assuming you are running the stock ROM for the S2. I’d consider doing a hard reset on the device first. Make sure to backup all your important data first including those stored in your SD card before performing this procedure as it will return your device to its basic factory settings.

  • Turn your phone off.
  • With the phone off, press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key. You’ll see the Android recovery screen.
  • Scroll to Wipe Data/Factory Reset using the Volume Up or Down keys. Select with the power key.
  • Scroll down to Yes, Delete User Data and select it.
  • Back on the first screen, scroll down to Wipe Cache Partition and select it.
  • Your factory reset is now complete.
  • Go to Reboot System Now to restart the phone

Once the process has completed try to see if the Wi-Fi operates normally. If it doesn’t and you can still make it work by bending the device then chances are it is already a hardware concern. For this issue I don’t recommend you to open the device and fix it unless you have experience in this sort of thing. The best option right now is to send it to an authorized service center and have it looked at.

Galaxy S2 Sound Issues

Problem: Hi, I have a Samsung S4 bought in January from toronto. Its been 4 months since I am using it. The sound of the fone doesnt work and all apps which require sound hang when the app is launched. the fone doesnt ring on calls and even the alarm doesnt work. Pls help. Thanks

Solution: This could either be a software or a hardware concern. First try to attach a headphone to the device and see if the sound works. If the device sounds normally then the problem could be with the speaker of your device or it could be a problem with the headphone jack itself that is always activated even with no headphones on. Turn off your device and see if you can clean the headphone jack with a small q-tip and some isopropyl alcohol.

You can also check if it is a software issue causing this problem by doing a hard reset on the device. Make sure to do a backup on all your data first. The procedure for this is listed in one of the solutions above.

Galaxy S2 Recover Data From Dead Phone

Problem: Hi, i found your email at one of the forums…anyway, two days ago I woke up to a dead samsung galaxy s2.I have had it checked to customer service centers, but to no avail, they suggest a JTAG to deep reset/jump start the phone. Doing JTAG will surely wipe all data. My problem is that i don’t have any backup of all my contacts, email, messages, everything. everything is still inside the phone. If they are to wipe all data, how will i retrieve it?? I was hoping you would know of another way? I’m okay to wipe all date, but I have to back it up first.

Solution: One of the solutions to recover the internal data from a dead S2 is by connecting it to a computer with the latest Kies software installed and hope that it gets recognized. First download the latest Kies software from the Samsung site and install it in your computer.

  • Connect your device to your computer.
  • Open Kies and click the Back up/Restore tab.
  • If necessary, click Data backup.
  • Mark the checkbox next to the content you want to back up. You can select all content by marking the checkbox next to Select all items. Click Backup.
  • Click Complete when the backup is finished.

Galaxy S2 Charges But Won’t Turn On

Problem: Hi – I have the above phone and it will not turn on.  I have charged it overnight and now when I plug the charger into it, it shows the battery with a ¼ inch green and then a yellow diamond with an exclamation mark on it.  Can you please tell me what this means?

Solution: Are you using a stock ROM on your device or have you installed any custom ROM lately? There could be a problem with the rooting or flashing process. If you are on stock ROM try taking out the battery then place it back on the device. Also try to charge your S2 with a USB cord connected to the laptop and see if it now works. If not then you will have to make a trip to an authorized service center to have them look at your device.

Galaxy S2 Not Getting Text Messages

Problem: Im not sure you can help but since yesterday i am unable to see my sent nor recieved text messages in my message area they only show on staus bar not sure if maybe i hit something or turned something off .thank you for your time.

Solution: This could be a problem with the messaging application. First try to clear the cache of the app.

  • From the home screen, tap Applications.
  • Scroll to and tap Settings.
  • Scroll to and tap Applications.
  • Tap the All tab.
  • Scroll to and tap the Messaging application.
  • Tap Clear cache.

Also make sure that the device is set to auto retrieve messages and that notifications are turned on.

Galaxy S2 Rooting Question

Problem: Hi, I have a T-Mobile Galaxy S2 that I want to root. Is this a procedure I can do on my end? What advantages would I get once I have rooted my device? Thanks

Solution: Rooting a device gives you more control over it allowing you to personalize it even more. Some of the reasons why a lot of people root their devices include

  • Unlock hidden features and install “incompatible” apps
  • Automate everything
  • Boost your phone’s speed and battery life
  • Block ads in any app
  • Back up your device
  • Remove preinstalled crapware
  • Tweak Android
  • Flash a custom kernel
  • Flash a custom ROM

Rooting is generally an easy procedure that can be performed by anyone who has a basic working knowledge of the Android system. Try to read more about the rooting process of your particular device before performing it. Make sure to use the correct procedure intended for your particular model since different Android models have different rooting methods. A Galaxy S4 for example will have a different rooting procedure compared to a Galaxy S2.
