It’s weird. We thought we knew everything there was to know about LG’s G3 prior to the big unveil on Tuesday, and now that the smartphone is official, we realize there are still variables to the equation. Not many, but big. Make-or-break kind of question marks.
Namely, exactly what markets will be getting what version of the G3, and for how much? Confused? Let me jog your memory. To appease both power users and prospective buyers on tighter budgets, LG announced two slightly distinct flavors of its latest flagship device.
One would go all-in on power and memory, with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB built-in storage, while the other would keep things a smidge more humble, thanks to only 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal space. Depending on the price gap, the former is poised to be in higher demand, as long as LG doesn’t get wild ideas and makes it exclusive to certain Asian countries, as a number of tipsters suggested.
Which thankfully isn’t the case, according to info pulled from T-Mobile USA’s website. The Uncarrier, like Sprint, AT&T and Verizon, has a placeholder page live, staying mum on shipping dates and pricing, but promising the handheld will become available “soon”.
They also list a thorough spec sheet, which includes among others, you guessed it, 3 GB RAM and 32 GB ROM. Sooo, can we assume all US carriers will offer the top config? Not so fast. Sprint, which doesn’t detail specs, pegs G3’s ARV (Approximate Retail Value) at $599.99 in its sweepstakes’ rulebook.
Sounds too good to be true for a model packing 3/32 GB, and it probably is. Ergo, I reckon the Now Network may settle for the lower-end variation. Unless the ARV isn’t to be trusted. After all, it is an approximation, and one made for tax purposes, so it’s wise to view it with caution.
Back to T-Mo, I wouldn’t get my hopes very high for a “reasonable” price tag. At best, $650. $700 is a possibility too, although it feels steep. And might hurt LG’s chances to truly challenge the likes of Samsung and HTC.
Remember, all signs point to a US commercial launch in late June, and Sprint has exclusive rights over the “Shine Gold” flavor. Pre-orders aren’t live yet, but pre-registrations to get notifications are. And yes, Sprint awards a G3 copy a day to an enthusiastic LG fan through July 11. Good luck.
