We’ve heard rumors of Samsung launching its very own Google Glass competitor, with patent filings confirming the company’s plans to venture into the segment. A new report now claims that this wearable could launch as the Gear Glass this year, possibly with the Galaxy Note 4 phablet at the annual IFA event in September.
If these rumors are true, it would essentially mean that Samsung is beating Google to the punch by launching a commercial version of a Google Glass like wearable. Until very recently, Glass was only a developer product and still costs a hefty $1,500, so maybe Samsung can try to one-up Google with its new offering. The Gear Glass will be reportedly running Tizen like the company’s new breed of Gear smartwatches.
Business Korea cites an undisclosed Samsung associate who is believed to have said the following – “The Gear Glass design combines an ear piece and display, enabling people to listen to music with the right ear while looking at the display with the right eye.” This is what the patent filing from last year indicated as well, so it could well be true.
But since it’s still too early in the day, we suggest you to take the report with a grain of salt until we have confirmation to prove its legitimacy. That said, this doesn’t seem like a long shot for a company like Samsung which has always wanted to bring unique and niche devices to the market.
