Thirteen problems were addressed in this post and this is the tenth part of our Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Problems series. #1. Note 2 stuck on Factory Mode
Problem: I have a Samsung Galaxy Note II. I loved my phone until they updated the software. Now my alarm does not work but the worst thing is my phone has a message on every page of my home screen. It is in a black box with yellow lettering and I cannot remove it. I called Sprint and they worked me through a couple suggestions but nothing worked. I took it to Sprint yesterday and they said I had to take it to another store with a technician. I hope you can assist. Here is what’s listed in the box. [Hardware info withheld for privacy reasons.] — Cynthia
Solution: The black box means your phone is stuck in Factory Mode, and it’s more of a software issue than anything. And yes, the recent update could have messed up the phone. There is a couple of things I know would bring the phone out of the factory mode but they require the phone to be rooted, which means you would void your warranty when you do so. We want to help you but we don’t want to compromise the safety of your phone, so I will not walk you through that procedure. Instead, I would recommend you bring the phone to a Sprint store with a technician so that they could revert the software back to previous version and update it successfully. If the black box disappears, all other features that are currently not functioning will start to work again.
#2. Pull down Note 2 4.3 update from AT&T
Problem: I have a Galaxy Note 2 SGH-i317. It is an AT&T phone. I use it on Straight Talk. I was wondering if this could be the reason I haven’t received the jelly bean 4.3 update? Thank you for your help, Linda.
Solution: If your phone is still running AT&T stock firmware, you can actually pull the update down from AT&T servers. Have you tried calling Straight Talk about it already? Straight Talk has its own line (models) of Samsung phones, so they, too, roll out updates from time to time. However, you said that your phone was AT&T’s variant, I think you still have to get updates from AT&T provided it is running required version of Android and its respective baseband (v4.1.2, I317UCAMA4). Alternatively, try pulling the update down via KIES.
#3. Note 2 tethering issue
Problem: At times when my Note II is plugged via USB to my PC and using tethering. The phone will go blank and I cannot switch it on no matter pressing the home button or even d ‘on’ or ‘off’ switch. I need to take the battery out and reinsert. Your help on this is very much appreciated as I use a lot of Wi-Fi tethering to the internet from my PC.
Solution: You said you tether your connection a lot so I was waiting for you to tell us when this problem started because I’m pretty sure this problem didn’t exist before. Why don’t you try booting the phone to Safe Mode and tether your connection with your PC. If the problem was solved while the phone is in that state, then third-party apps or services may have caused this issue. However, if the problem still persists, then perform factory reset.
#4. Note 2 keeps playing notification sound
Problem: My phone used to make the normal one-time alert for a text message, and then of course the blue LED would flash until I checked it. All of sudden it has started making the notification sound like every 2 minutes after getting a text until I open it. This is very annoying, and I can’t find a settings option to change this. Please help me to stop this!! Thank you so much, Nikky.
Solution: How many messaging apps did you install on your phone? If you have more than one, then try disabling third-parties and leave the stock messaging app to receive your messages. If, however, you only have one messaging app, try booting to Safe Mode and if the problem persists, try wiping the cache partition through the Recovery Mode. If that doesn’t help either, perform factory reset.
#5. Note 2 Bluetooth issue
Problem: I have a note 2 for about 3 months I read all your updates and posts. The issue that I’m having is I can’t seem to Bluetooth music to others. I can receive music from a friends Bluetooth Verizon carrier. My ATT doesn’t show the share symbol win trying to send music like Verizon just says via Bluetooth but that doesn’t even pick up other Bluetooth signal but when I’m not in music I can Bluetooth, share, send any file thing but music Bluetooth. I googled and tried everything else to no avail. Please help.
Solution: If you’re using the stock Music app, try clearing both its cache and data, it could be just an app issue since you said you can send music track via Bluetooth when you’re not using the app. I don’t think it is a carrier-specific issue but if it persists, try booting to Safe Mode and try the process again. If there is an available update for the phone, please try to download and install it.
#6. App icons shadowed with SD
Problem: I hope you are doing well. I appreciate all of the information you give us. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 with AT&T. I am running 4.3 on it. I recently installed a new 64gig sd card. I first transferred all of the data from my old 32 gig card using my computer. I then moved programs, that were movable, from my phone memory to the new 64 sd card, one by one. I regularly clean my cache, close background programs and optimize. All programs are accessible and work fine. My problem is that all icons that are on the SD card show up on the display shadowed with an “sd” in the bottom right corner of the icon when dragged to a screen page. When I select the “all programs” icon and open the screen all icons show up normally, including the ones on the SD card. Is there a fix for this? — Rick
Answer: There’s nothing to fix because apparently it’s not a problem; it’s just an indication that those apps run from the microSD card. I know someone who knows how to get rid of the label and I will reach out to him. I will update this post once I got the info I need.
#7. Device has been modified
Problem: Hello, I just rooted my Galaxy Note 2 already running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and when I tried to check for OTA update I get this popup saying ‘Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available.’ Please does dis mean I can no longer get OTA updates and what can I do about it? Thanks.
Solution: I hope the rooting was successful but the thing is even the non-rooted phones also have encountered this problem. But here’s what you can do to attempt to fix this problem:
- Unmount or remove your microSD card from your phone.
- Reboot the Note 2.
- Enter the Recovery Mode, and from there, wipe the cache partition.
- Boot the phone to normal mode.
- Check for OTA updates.
- I hope previous steps changed the ‘Modified’ status to ‘Normal’ so you can download and install OTA updates. If that’s the case, then continue with the normal update process.
- Once the phone was updated, insert the microSD card.
- But if all else fails, try factory reset and unrooting your phone.
#8. Note 2 camera not clear
Problem: Hi, I have bought my galaxy note 2 from about 6 months. It probably worked fine 100% but after about 2 months the back camera looks like it is not clear. It captures normally but its is not clear. I tried more than once to reset the setting and adjust the focus but it doesn’t work. It has nothing to do with the setting or focus.
Solution: I’m not sure what you mean by “not clear.” The immediate way to remedy this problem is to reset the camera app to its default settings. I’m not trying to discredit your statement but first off, clear both the cache and data of the Camera app via the Application Manager. If that doesn’t help, boot to recovery mode and wipe cache partition. Should the problem persist, perform factory reset and if all else fails, have the phone checked by a technician. It could be an issue with the camera sensor.
#9. Can’t enter download mode
Problem: I cannot enter download mode using Volume Down + Home + Power on. I pulled out the battery for 5 minutes and repeated the process. Plugged the USB to computer, pulled out battery held Vol down and home button + open ODIN to connect USB to phone. The only method i didn’t try yet is jig. Is there any other method please. I only get into recovery mode Vol Up + Home + Power. Please help.
Solution: Well, you should be able to enter download mode without any problem regardless what ROM or firmware you’re running. It’s just a matter of pressing the correct keys. The following procedures are the same to what you did but please try them:
- While the phone is on, remove the battery to make sure the phone is completely off.
- Press the Volume Down button and hold it, then press the Home button and hold it, and then the Power button.
- Hold the buttons until the download mode shows up.
- Press the Volume Up button to continue to download mode.
If you still cannot enter download mode with the procedure above, then try this:
- Make sure the USB cable is connected to your computer.
- Power down the phone normally.
- Press and hold the Volume Up, Volume Down and the Power button.
- Insert the cable on your phone’s port.
That should bring you into download mode.
#10. Note 2 has missing keys
Problem: I just read your article about missing keys are not performing buttons. My delete button, the one with the X on it when I’m online or YouTube my delete button does not delete my text. If I’m making a comment and have a typo I cannot fix it. Do you have any idea what is causing this? It just started a couple months ago before that it was fine. My Galaxy Note 2 has never been in contact with liquid of any sort it’s never been dropped. Hope you have an easy answer for me. Love your articles very informative.
Solution: If it’s not an issue with the keyboard app you’re using, then it must be a digitizer issue. If this issue happens in both portrait and landscape mode, then it must be an app issue. You said that the delete button isn’t functioning, if that happens on both landscape and portrait mode, it’s an app problem. However, if a different key located on that very same location doesn’t function when you change mode, it’s a possible digitizer issue. But I assume you already tried removing the screen protector, if you have any, or cleaning your screen thoroughly. If this is the case, have the phone checked by a technician.
#11. Note 2 keeps crashing and freezing
Problem: Hi Droid guy, I have a problem with my Samsung Galaxy Note II GT-7100. I’ve recently upgraded to JB 4.3 through OTA method. But ever since I upgraded, it keep on crashing and my screen freezes, forcing me to restart my phone over and over again. It happens everyday and I’ve to restart it 4-5 times daily. Quite recently it started to pop up messages that almost all of my apps stop working and running. I bought the phone in January 2013, never been rooted but I’ve added 32GB Class-10 SD Card to help me store the apps and other things. Could it be because I’ve move some of my movable apps to the SD Card?
Solution: No, it’s not that. Apps that were properly moved couldn’t possibly cause any problem to the phone provided the microSD card you’re using is in good shape. There could just be some corrupt data that needs clearing. So, that’s the first thing you should do. Boot the phone to recovery mode and wipe the cache partition from there. If that doesn’t fix the problem, then perform factory reset after you backed up all your important data.
#12. Note 2 pinch to zoom issue
Problem: When I updated my Note 2 to the 4.1.2 I noticed that my camera finger zoom was not zooming in correctly. When I would zoom using my finger tips it would go from 1.0x to 4.0x. The only other way to zoom in without jumping from 1.0x to 4.0x is by using the volume control. How do I revert back to the touch screen zoom?
Solution: This problem is familiar to me as I personally encountered it in 2012. Luckily it isn’t a serious problem. Clearing the cache and data would solve this problem. In case the problem is with the ROM that handles the camera software, wiping the cache partition would surely solve this problem. Lastly, if all else fails, factory reset must solve this problem.
#13. Phone charging slow, cord becomes hot
Problem: Hello I have the note 2 and not only is my phone charging slow but the cord gets extremely hot to touch.
Solution: There is a possibility that the charger itself is defective or the cable has some problems. For your safety and the safety of your phone, buy a new charger. There’s no point is troubleshooting an accessory that could possibly hurt you. I hope you get my point.
#14. Cannot format microSD card
Problem: Hello Harold, I am a Samsung Galaxy Note II user and I am having problems with my microsd card. While searching on the net for solutions; I came across thedroidguy web page listing Top 4 Samsung Galaxy Note 2 microSD Card Problems. Unfortunately none of them was my exact problem. So I wanted to send you an e-mail in case you can help me identify and solve my problem. I have a 64gb microSD card branded Team Group. I have been using it for months with no problem but I can not write to card, neither format it since 16th of October (Because newest photos are taken on that day). Any picture I take vanishes in the second since then. I can read the contents but the contents do not change. I also tried to format it via my computer but no luck. I have other micro SD cards like 2gb and 8gb and they work fine with my phone. Do you have any clue what may be the problem? Thank you in advance. Kind Regards, Sahin.
Solution: I don’t know what’s causing this but there’s one way to force format the microSD card provided it is still in good condition. Here’s how…
- Connect your microSD card to your computer.
- Open the Computer Management Console.
- Under Storage, click Disk Management on the left pane.
- Find your microSD card and then right-click on it then select Format.
- Click OK to format.
