How To Fix Problems With Verizon Galaxy S3 [Part 3]

#1. Verizon Galaxy S3 text notification won’t clear

Problem: Okay guys, since you’re asking your readers to send their problems, please help me with mine. I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 under Verizon network and it just started about three days ago that text notification will not go away even if I have read every message in my inbox. I double-checked and I’m sure there aren’t any unread message left. Do you have a remedy for this? Thank you guys! — Michelle

Solution: This is just a minor glitch, Michelle, and it can be solved by simply clearing the cache and data of the BadgeProvider service. Please follow the steps provided below:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap the More tab.
  3. Tap the Application Manager, then swipe to display the All section.
  4. Scroll to and find BadgeProvider.
  5. Tap Clear Cache, and then Clear Data.
  6. Reboot the phone.

#2. Verizon Galaxy S3 used almost entire RAM

Problem: Hello Droid guy, I have an issue with my phone. Before anything else, the phone is a Galaxy S3 and I’m with Verizon. My problem is that my phone now runs very, very slow and I understand it is because it already used up almost its entire RAM. Is this a common issue with the phone?

Solution: High-end smartphones, while they’re so powerful, will come to a point when their performance will deteriorate and RAM is always one of the things to blame. If it were my phone, I should have performed factory reset already but to save you from the hassled of backing up your data, please try this:

  1. Go back to the Home screen.
  2. Press and hold the Home button.
  3. You can close each application by touching and dragging them to the right. Or, you can simply tap the Clear All icon at the bottom-right.
  4. With Recent Applications cleared, tap the Task Manager icon.
  5. Tap Active applications and tap the End button next to the application you want to stop. You can also tap End All to stop all active apps.
  6. Now, if you have unsaved data, save them first because the next step may delete them.
  7. Tap the RAM tab, and then tap Clear memory.
  8. At this point, you must already have freed some space in your phone’s RAM. Try to view free memory.

#3. Verizon Galaxy S3 keeps restarting after the update

Problem: I am helping my mother with her problem. She has the Samsung Galaxy S3 and she’s on Verizon. She recently downloaded an update but her phone cannot start up normally. Did she get a bad update or is this a common issue with the phone? — Mei

Solution: Not necessarily a bad update. I’m not sure what update she got but if it’s a major update, there could be some changes in dependencies in the system and some data may have been corrupted. There’s only one way that I can think of aside from factory reset:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Simultaneously press and hold these three buttons: Volume Up key, Home key and Power key.
  3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but keep pressing and holding on the Volume and Home keys.
  4. When the Android System Recovery screen shows up, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  5. Press the Volume Down key to highlight/select “Wipe Cache Partition”
  6. Press the Power key to select and wipe cache
  7. With the “Reboot System Now” highlighted, press the Power key to restart the device.

#4. Gallery stopped working after the update

Problem: This is my third email to you guys and the first two emails, I found solutions is one of your posts. But by the way, my problem is that the Gallery app stopped working on my device and I cannot view my pictures. Every time I open the gallery, the message “Unfortunately, Gallery has stopped” pops up. How can I fix this? My phone is a Galaxy S3 and if it matters, I’m a Verizon customer. Thanks guys. Keep up the good work! — Myrna

Solution: Don’t worry Myrna, this problem is minor and can easily be resolved. Basically, during the update some data may have been corrupted and we need to clear them so the phone would be forced to cache newer and fresher set. For this problem, try going to Settings > Application Manager > All > then look for Gallery > tap Clear Cache and Clear Data buttons. If the problem persists, boot your phone to recovery mode and wipe the cache partition.

#5. Verizon Galaxy S3 Messaging app problem

Problem: Please help me Droid guy. I am an 80-year old woman and I need my phone most of the time to text my grand children. But recently I cannot text them because of there’s a small box on my screen saying my message has been stopped. How can it be stopped when I haven’t typed something yet? Please help me. All I want to do is text my grand children.

Solution: I am sorry you have to go through all this mess. But basically the problem with your phone is minor and it should be fixed a by simple procedure. That little box you see is telling you that the Messaging app, the one you use for texting, has been stopped. It can be fixed by this simple procedure:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings and then More tab.
  3. Tap Application Manager.
  4. Swipe twice to the left to choose All tab.
  5. Scroll to and tap Messaging.
  6. Tap Force Close button first.
  7. Tap Clear Cache and then Clear Data buttons.
  8. Launch the Messaging app and observe if the error message still pops up.

#6. Factory reset via recovery mode

Problem: Hi guys, Melai here. My Galaxy S3 will not continue to start up and I was told by a friend that I should perform factory reset but how can I do that? The only way I can do, as far as I know, is by going to Settings, which I can’t do now. Please give me a step-be-step guide on how to do master reset.

Solution: No problem, please follow the steps below, Melai:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home, and Power buttons.
  2. When the phone vibrates, release the Power button but continue holding the other two until Android System Recovery screen appears.
  3. Use the Volume Down button to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’ and press the Power button to select it.
  4. Still use the Volume Down button to highlight ‘delete all user data’ and press the Power button to select the option.
  5. Once the master reset is finished, highlight ‘reboot system now’ and hit the Power button one more time.

#7. Keep screen turned on during calls

Question: I don’t know if it’s possible but is there a way to keep the screen turned on even if I’m on a call? I understand that the screen would automatically turn off when the phone nears my face but if there’s a way to keep the screen on, that would be great. Thanks.

Answer: Yes, there is a setting for that:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap the Phone application.
  3. Tap the Menu key, and the select Call Settings.
  4. Tap or uncheck the ‘Auto screen off during calls.’
  5. Your phone’s screen will stay on during calls from now on.

#8. How to turn off word auto correct

Problem: I have a very annoying problem, guys. It came out after the update. I don’t really know what happened and I don’t know so much about smartphones. This Galaxy S3 is my first smartphone and I’m with Verizon here in the U.S. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Solution: There’s a feature called Predictive Text in Samsung Galaxy S3; you need to turn that off to fix your problem. Here’s how…

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Scroll to and tap Language and input.
  4. Swipe the switch beside Predictive Text option to display Off.

#9. Verizon Galaxy S3 downloading files again

Problem: Hello sir, after the update, my Galaxy S3 phone downloaded all files that I previously downloaded. Does it have to be like this? Is this a common issue with the phone? Oh by the way, I am a Verizon customer.

Solution: It’s a minor glitch. Here’s how you fix it:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings, and the More tab.
  3. Tap on Application Manager.
  4. Swipe left or right to display contents of All tab.
  5. Scroll to and tap Download Manager.
  6. Tap Clear Cache first, and then Clear Data.
  7. Tap OK.

#10. Verizon Galaxy S3 doesn’t display MMS pictures

Problem: Hello Droid guys, there is a slight problem with my phone. It’s a Galaxy S3 and I use Verizon’s network. I don’t know if my problem is common but whenever I receive an MMS message, there’s a warning sign or an exclamation point beside the icon of the picture but the image doesn’t show. What’s the cause of this? Is there a fix? I called Verizon’s customer service and the rep just doesn’t know what the problem is. He wanted me to perform factory reset but I refused because I have a lot of very important information saved in my phone. If you guys can help me with this, I would surely appreciate it. It seems you are more knowledgeable when it comes to these things. Thanks guys.

Solution: It happens when MMS settings are set to “High.” It’s no problem, it’s just a matter of lowering the settings to normal. Here’s how to solve this issue:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Touch Messages, the tap the Menu key again.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Choose Multimedia messages (MMS).
  5. Tap Priority settings.
  6. Choose Normal.

You would also need to turn off delivery reports:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Touch Messages, the tap the Menu key again.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Choose Multimedia messages (MMS).
  5. Tap Delivery Report.
  6. Send Test message.
  7. Turn off Delivery Report and then send a test message.

#11. Verizon Galaxy S3 can’t download apps

Problem: My Galaxy S3 phone can’t download apps from the Play Store, there’s an error. This started shortly after I updated it. I already tried rebooting the phone and removing the battery for two minutes but the problem is still there. Also, I already cleared the cache and data of the Play Store to no avail. I am at my wits end here and I need your help. Please suggest a solution. Thank you in advance.

Solution: There’s one thing I want you to try, here it is:

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings and then More tab.
  3. Tap Application Manager.
  4. Swipe twice to the left to choose All tab.
  5. Scroll to and tap Google Play Store.
  6. Tap Uninstall Updates.

#12. Cannot call in or out

Problem: Droid guy, I have a question for you. I can neither receive nor make a phone call; it’s saying call barring is on. What is that? Is it a network problem or it’s just with the phone? I am not a tech savvy person so I need your help please. Do I have to call Verizon about it? By the way, my phone is Galaxy S3. Thank you.

Solution: Nah, you don’t have to call Verizon for it. You can fix it by yourself. Just follow these steps:

  1. Turning Off Call Barring
  2. Launch Phone, then tap the Menu key.
  3. Tap Call Settings, and then Additional Settings.
  4. Tap Call Barring, then Voice call.
  5. To disable call barring, tap each of the barring types that you’ve enabled before.
  6. Enter your barring password. If you never changed your barring password, then the default is 0000.
  7. Tap OK.
