Caterpillar is a company known for manufacturing heavy equipment, the kind used in the construction industry. Unknown to a lot of people is the fact that this company has also released an Android smartphone called the Cat B15 which hit the market last year. What’s interesting about this device is that it is designed to be rugged and survive hard knocks, immersion in water, dust, or falls from a height of nearly 2 meters.
So how rugged is the Cat B15? The company recently released a video over at YouTube showing how tough the device is. First the smartphone was dropped from a height of 35 feet into a pool of water. It was then dropped from the same height to solid ground. A quick inspection of it showed that it still works.
The next test done was to lay 600 Cat B15 smartphones on the ground then have a Cat 277D Multi Terrain Loader which weighs more than 9000 pounds (around 4 tons) run over the devices. After running over the devices they still worked without even the displays getting cracked.
Check out the video below.
Of course the Cat 277D Multi Terrain Loader isn’t the company’s heaviest machines. The threads of the loader have also been replaced from metal to rubber. This therefore distributes the weight of the loader which ensures that no single Cat B15 smartphone will be taking too much weight in a single time. Despite this, it is still pretty impressive and we are sure no normal smartphone will be able to survive such tests.
