A recently released report by Counterpoint, a leading independent market research and consulting firm, shows which smartphone models have made the most sales globally for the month of February. As expected two brands dominate the list which combine to capture 8 of the ten slots. The remaining 2 slots surprisingly come from a relatively new company that hasn’t even started to sell its smartphones in the global market.
Top Ten Smartphone List As Of February 2014
- Apple iPhone 5S
- Apple iPhone 5C
- Samsung Galaxy S4
- Samsung Note 3
- Apple iPhone 4S
- Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini
- Xiaomi Hongmi Redrice
- Samsung Galaxy S3
- Samsung Galaxy S3 mini
- Xiaomi MI 3
Apple and Samsung dominate the list with Apple capturing the top two slots with its recent iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C model. Samsung on the other hand counts the Galaxy S4 and the Note 3 as its popular models which captured the third and fourth spots respectively.
What can probably be regarded as the dark horse in this list is Xiaomi which has two models capturing the seventh and tenth spot. The Xiaomi Hongmi Redrice and the Xiaomi MI 3 have made it into the list which is quite impressive since the company has only made its products officially available in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.
Peter Richardson at Counterpoint said that “At the global level there has been little brand diversity over recent months. However the appearance of Xiaomi on the best sellers list highlights an increasing trend – local brands moving up the sales rankings in their respective countries. It’s a consequence of commoditization of hardware and software. Provided the price is sufficiently attractive, consumers are willing to try local brands over the higher profile global brands.”
The Xiaomi Hongmi Redrice is a budget quad-core device that has an impressive 4.7-inch 720p IPS display with 312ppi density protected by gorilla Glass 2. It uses a MediaTek MT6589 Cortex-A7 processor with a clock speed of 1.7 GHz and a PowerVR SGX544 GPU. It also has 1GB of RAM , 4GB of storage space, and uses a 2000 mAh battery.
The Xiaomi MI 3 on the other hand is the company’s premium smartphone that sports a 5 inch display with an impressive 1080p IPS 441 ppi resolution.
Xiaomi recently revealed that it has already shipped 11 million devices for the first quarter of this year. This is already more than half of the number of devices it sold for the whole 2013 calendar year. The company aims to sell 60 million devices this year.
