Yesterday we ran a story regarding the Chinese documents that showed OnePlus is owned by Oppo. This is quite controversial since from the start OnePlus CEO Peter Lau said that the company is an independent startup that wants to break the status quo by offering an affordable no-compromise device.
With a lot of people wondering where the new company is getting its funding , how it is able to setup a worldwide distribution network quickly, or even come up with a high-end smartphone in less than six months, it didn’t take long for the documents at the Shenzhen Municipal Market Supervisory Authority (SIPO), a Chinese regulatory agency, to show up. The documents show that Oppo is a whole stockholder of OnePlus.
OnePlus is clearing this issue up and has made an official statement regarding this.
“We understand the confusion as many people are just finding out about OnePlus. But as we’ve said from the beginning, OnePlus is a separately run company that does share common investors with OPPO. One of those investors is OPPO Electronic. OPPO Electronic is an investment company and is not the same as OPPO Mobile. OnePlus is also in talks with other investors.”
The statement given shows that it isn’t Oppo Mobile (makers of smartphones) but instead Oppo Electronic (an investment company) that has made a 100 percent investment in OnePlus. This same investment company has also invested in Oppo. It is not unusual for a company to diversify its investments and it probably became easy for them to invest in OnePlus since Peter Lau, CEO of OnePlus, came from Oppo.
Does this issue affect the end consumer? Probably not as consumers are more concerned about the specs and features of a device rather than who owns or invests in the company who releases the device.
What will probably affect the end consumer is that OnePlus wasn’t able to make it clear as to who owns the company. From the start they have always said that they are an independent startup so when the news came in that Oppo is a whole investor of the company then this created confusion among a lot of people following the company.
OnePlus will be releasing its OnePlus One flagship Android smartphone soon which will cost only $299.
