Amazon Prime Data

We already know about Amazon’s plans to launch a smartphone in the coming months, but it seems like the online retailer has some other plans for the mobile industry as well. If a report from BGR is to be believed, Amazon could be looking to launch its own cellular data plan called “Prime Data“.

It is said that this data plan will be launched along with the rumored smartphone, so we might be in for a couple of surprises with Amazon’s new offering. Details regarding how this data plan will be offered are not known yet, but it is being said that Amazon could partner with AT&T to offer something along the lines of Sponsored Data.

Having its own cellular data network to bank on will certainly help Amazon endorse the smartphone better. And it will certainly be interesting to see how Amazon handles the data sharing with AT&T, if this rumor turns out to be true. A merger with one of the MVNOs cannot be ruled out as well.
