Samsung Galaxy Beam 2 Spotted In China

Remember the Samsung Galaxy Beam that was first announced at MWC 2012? This device was quite unique since it came with a built-in pico projector that allowed anyone to make presentations on the fly. While it allowed consumers to have a smartphone and a projector combined in one device it however suffered from a few flaws. It was quite bulky, ran on an older version of Android, and its projector is relatively dim.

Now two years after the release of the Beam it looks like its successor is about to be released. Spotted over at TENAA (China’s equivalent to the FCC) is a model called the SM-G3858 which Samsung submitted for certification. Several photos of the device have been included which shows a bump on its upper back side with a wide lens at the tip. This has prompted people to believe that it comes with a pico projector. Since it has a pico projector then it must be a Galaxy Beam device.

The 3.5mm headphone jack has been moved from its usual position at the top to the left side of the device just below the volume rocker.  Another factor that strengthens the assumption that this is a successor to the original Galaxy Beam is that it has an extra button on its right side located above the power button. The original Galaxy Beam also has this extra button.

The TENAA entry also includes the specs of this device which we have listed below.

  • 4.66″ WVGA (800×480) display
  • Quad-Core 1.2GHz chipset
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 32GB expandable memory via microSD card
  • Android 4.2.2
  • CDMA and GSM/3G connectivity

Let’s take a look at the specs of the original Galaxy Beam

  • 4.0″  (800×480) display
  • Dual-core 1 GHz Cortex-A9
  • 768 MB RAM
  • 8 GB storage expandable memory via microSD card
  • Android 2.3.6 (Gingerbread)
  • GSM/3G connectivity

The upcoming device definitely shows a lot of improvements. Its display is much larger, It uses a more powerful quad-core processor, comes with bigger RAM and storage, and uses a newer version of the Android operating system. Hopefully, Samsung will also include a more powerful pico projector.

Based on the photos we could also see the logo of China Mobile 3G at the back. Since this carrier does not have LTE yet then we could safely say that the SM-G3858 will not only be a 3G device.

  1. Yeah, I have heard about that. Don’t the carriers in India provide good offers on such device giving a contract on 2 years or something similar?

  2. While I appreciate the fact that Samsung did some work with Beam 2. But still there was opportunity to work on the Android version. If not 4.4, at least 4.3 could be released here.

  3. It is the same problem with Indian market. The number of people still using Samsung Galaxy Y is big.

  4. i think Samsung is trying to address the wants of a market in China. Most Chinese can’t afford high end phones like iPhones and Galaxy S and Note series unless they set aside a sizeable amount of their monthly income for a few months.

  5. Its time to stop, Samsung. We know you can make a lot of unnecessary phones, flood the market with them, and confuse your potential buyers. Now, please stop till you release the Note 4.

  6. Samsung made something new! Wait, it is just an upgrade on their older version. Yeah, no innovation.

  7. I din’t the first version of this sold well enough for the company to come up with a second version. Anyway, having a mini projector on your phone is kind of a good idea.
