Philips launches two new Android powered TVs

Philips Android TV

Dutch manufacturer Philips has just announced two new Android 4.4.2 powered televisions called the 8109 and the 8209. Since these are officially approved by Google, they come equipped with Google Play services so you can download applications and do everything you would with a Google TV. These televisions come in sizes of 48 to 55 inches, so they’re not your standard run of the mill television sets.

While the storage is a paltry 2.7GB, the TV comes with support for cloud storage services like Google Drive and Dropbox out of the box, along with several USB ports. Philips claims that the televisions come with support for upscaling of apps to view in HD, while the native resolution is believed to be Full HD 1080p.

These televisions will be reportedly available in Russia first with a launch expected in Europe and other parts of the world soon, although Philips is yet to spill details on that. The company however has specifically claimed that these smart televisions will not be launched in the UK.

  1. A projector is cool. I have a friend with this set up and it’s really nice. You feel like you’re in a theater if you can put the right pieces down in the right spot.

  2. Philips TVs are very reliable and of high quality. It’s a shame this one is not for US market. I think it will really sell well here.

  3. Google Play also offers books. I think it will eventually transform into a sort of a virtual one-stop shop for all things digital in the next few years.

  4. Yeah, I too read that somewhere. But I’m not sure about that. Anyway, the company is still releasing consumer electronics with the same ‘Philips’ brand name.

  5. And that is one thing I don’t really like with technology. You buy something today, and there is something really better in the market the next day. Now you feel like you need to get that as well.

  6. Any news about an India launch? This looks really awesome. Would love to have one in my room.

  7. Yeah, they are really tempting. They are just…sexy. The almost-no-bezel design is just so awesome.

  8. It is going to be really crazy that is for sure. We just recently bought a new TV for the bedroom and now we just might need to upgrade with this coming out.

  9. I didn’t even realize that Google Play was a source for music and movies; I always think of apps when I think of Google Play.

  10. I’m all about the big screen TVs, too! We don’t have screens that large here at home except for the one in the living room, but even it isn’t a smart TV.

  11. This is pretty cool! We can already download movies from Netflix (the Wii) right onto our TV. It will be cool to download them from the Play Store too. I love Google!

  12. I never heard that. I just bought a new Philips TV for my daughters room. I did not buy one of these though. I think Philips is here to stay. I can’t wait to purchase one of these smart televisions.

  13. Excellent. So I guess now we can download the movies directly from the Play Store and watch it on the TV! That is so convenient!

  14. But I read somewhere that they are done with consumer electronics and that they will focus only on medical electronics?

  15. Philips makes good TVs. And these two are going to be awesome. With Google TV on board, there is no doubt this is going to be a hit.

  16. I plan to get a projector, and make one of the rooms in the house empty and dark with a good white wall, and then project to that wall. That’s the kind of TV I would like to have. 🙂

  17. I’m all about bigger screen TV’s too. I wish they were going to be released here though. They do sound pretty cool. I love the Google Play will be on them. I’m all for smart TV’s.

  18. I didn’t know that Philips is a Dutch manufacturer! You learn something new everyday. 🙂 As for the TV’s, I am all about those big-screen sizes. All of our TV sets are above 48 inches.
