HTC’s latest Desire 616 handset spotted in the wild

HTC Desire 616

HTC appears to be quite keen on expanding its midrange lineup. We recently saw the launch of the Desire 816 and the 610 during the MWC event in Barcelona and now a newer Desire handset has cropped up in China. This smartphone is known as the Desire 616, indicating that it’s a smaller sibling of the Desire 816.

The handset has just passed through TENAA which is the Chinese certification database and could soon make its way to retail outlets around the region. Some lucky users have managed to gain access to the smartphone and have posted images as well.

Needless to say, it looks exactly like every HTC smartphone we’ve seen since last year with the BlinkFeed homescreen as well as the front facing speaker (only one in this case).

The Desire 616 will reportedly feature a 5 inch 720p display, an 8-megapixel camera, 1GB of RAM, support for microSD cards and a 1.7 GHz MediaTek made octa-core chipset. The Android version running on the Desire 616 is not known at the moment, but we’re guessing it’s Android 4.4. The smartphone will be offered in white, black, blue, yellow and red color variants.

Pricing has been set at 1,299 CNY or $209, which is quite decent for a smartphone of its caliber. HTC is yet to confirm if the handset will ever make its way outside China, but considering the demand for midrange handsets in global markets, it might not be a bad idea to bring it to Europe and other parts of Asia eventually. We cannot rule out a North American launch either.
