The recently announced Sony Xperia Z1 Compact was widely hyped and built up for being the true ‘mini’ smartphone (based on the Xperia Z1 hardware). However, the smartphone was still running on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean at the time of launch, which was a bit of a letdown since Android 4.4 KitKat was already available. A new leak now claims that this handset, along with the Xperia Z1 and the Xperia Z Ultra will receive the Android 4.4 KitKat update in April. Since Xperia smartphones are mostly available unlocked across the globe Sony will not have to worry about carriers meddling with the update rollout process.
We only have the April timeframe at the moment with no concrete word on the date. Samsung has already begun its Android 4.4 rollout for the two flagships from last year and so has HTC. LG is believed to be readying an update for its LG G2 and G Pro 2 smartphones by the end of March. So by sending out an update in April, Sony is one of the last OEMs to rollout the coveted KitKat update. Devices like the Xperia Z2 and the Xperia Z2 Tablet which were launched earlier this week sport Android 4.4 out of the box.
