MediaTek Unveils MT6595 Octa-Core Processor With ARM Cortex-A17

Taiwanese company MediaTek has been quite busy these past couple of months. The company is known for releasing the world’s first “true octa-core” processor called the MT6592 which is powered by eight Cortex-A7 cores just recently. Today, the company announced  its second octa-core processor called the MT6595 which now uses four Cortex-A17 cores running at 2.2GHz and four Cortex –A7 cores running at 1.7GHz.

The MT6595 can use all of its eight cores simultaneously when it is needed. When processing demand is low only the four Cortex-A7 cores are used, like for instance when browsing the web or when updating social media statuses. This allows the device to save on battery power. When processing demand is high such as when playing games the Cortex-A17 cores will kick in adding power to the Cortex-A7 cores.

The MT6595 uses the PowerVR Rogue series 6 GPU which is codenamed “Han”. This GPU has a clock speed of 600MHz and has a performance similar or slightly better compared to Qualcomm’s Adreno 320.

Multimedia is being handled by the company’s own proprietary technology. This processor comes with H.265 Ultra HD hardware-accelerated codec, with support for H.264 and VP9 also in UHD. It also comes with post processing technologies which are ClearMotion and Miravision. ClearMotion allows the elimination of frame jitter while Miravision allows for a better picture quality when streaming. In terms of audio quality this chip supports 24-bit 192 kHz Hi-Fi-quality audio and comes with an integrated DAC that has a >110 dB signal-to-noise ratio. Finally, the chip has a 20MP camera capability able to support 2560×1600 WQXGA for display output.

In terms of wireless technology the MT6595 supports 802.11ac and 4G LTE. It is also now better in accurately determining the position thanks to the Multi-GNSS positioning systems, including GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo, and QZSS. There’s also support for Bluetooth LE stack and ANT+ fitness tracking devices.

According to Jeffrey Ju, General Manager of the MediaTek Smartphone Business Unit, “MediaTek is focused on delivering a full-range of 4G LTE platforms and the MT6595 will enable our customers to deliver premium products with advanced features to a growing market.”
