  • Recent updates prevented Play Store from downloading apps.

  • “Download was unsuccessful. Please try again.”
  • “Download was unsuccessful.”
  • “com.google.process.gapps stopped working.”
  • “Cannot download apps from the Play Store.”

Possible Solutions

Again, this is a troubleshooting guide and we don’t exactly know what the problem is. The first step to solving the problem is knowing what is the problem and that’s what we’re going to do.

Step 1: Check your internet connection

If you’re connecting to a Wi-Fi hotspot or network, try to disconnect first, ‘forget’ the network and reconnect. Try to browse the web using your Xperia Z’s browser to confirm you have an active internet connection. For those who connect to a mobile data network, double-check you have the correct APN settings. Disable and re-enable mobile data and try to browse the web.

Forget Wi-Fi on Xperia Z

  1. Tap Applications icon from the Home screen.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Under Wireless & Networks, tap Wi-Fi.
  4. Tap and hold the Wi-Fi network name you’re connecting to.
  5. Tap Forget Network.

Reconnect to Wi-Fi on Xperia Z

  1. From the Home screen, tap Applications icon.
  2. Scroll to and tap Settings.
  3. Under Wireless & Networks, tap Wi-Fi.
  4. Let the phone scan for available networks.
  5. Tap the network you want to connect to and enter credentials if necessary.
  6. Tap Connect.

APN & Data Settings on Xperia Z

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
  2. Scroll to and tap Settings.
  3. Under ‘WIRELESS & NETWORKS,’ tap More.
  4. Scroll down to and tap Mobile networks.
  5. Ensure that Mobile data traffic is checked.
  6. Tap Access Point Names. By default, the device should be set to the T-Mobile Data APN.
  7. Tap the Menu icon in the lower-right corner.
  8. Tap New APN.
  9. Enter the access point information as necessary.
  10. Tap the Menu icon in the lower-right corner.
  11. Tap Save.
  12. Select the newly added APN from the list.

If you already have an active internet connection, try downloading an app from the Play Store and see if you can. Perhaps, this is the only problem you have. If not, then proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Clear Google Play Store Cache & Data

If you got an error like “com.google.process.gapps stopped working.” then it is a sign that the Play Store stopped working as well since it is one of the Google apps that were installed on the phone by default. You need to boot your phone if this is the case. But if the problem just occurred without apparent reason, you may need to clear Play Store’s and Download Manager’s cache and data. Here’s how:

  1. From the Home screen, press the Menu key.
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Touch Applications.
  4. Touch Manage applications.
  5. At the top of the screen, touch the All tab.
  6. Scroll to and touch Download Manager.
  7. Touch the Clear data button.
  8. If prompted, touch OK on the warning that all the saved information will be deleted.
  9. Press the Back key.
  10. Scroll to and touch Google Play Store.
  11. Touch the Clear data button.
  12. If prompted, touch OK on the warning that all the saved information will be deleted.
  13. Press the Home key.

You may need to setup your account on the Play Store after this procedure but after that, try to download any app and see if you can.

Step 3: Uninstall Google Play Store Updates

There were hundreds of Android users complaining not being able to download apps from the Play Store after updating it. Obviously, one way to test the theory that it could have been the new update that’s causing the issue is by uninstalling it reverting the app back to its working state.

  1. From the Home screen, press the Menu key.
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Touch Applications.
  4. Touch Manage applications.
  5. At the top of the screen, touch the All tab.
  6. Scroll to and touch Google Play Store.
  7. Tap Uninstall Updates.
  8. Tap Force Stop.
  9. Tap Clear Cache and Clear Data buttons.
  10. Reboot the phone.

Now try to see if the problem was solved.

Step 4: Factory Reset

If all else fails, backup everything in your Xperia Z especially your important data because you would need to revert the phone back to its factory settings by doing a factory reset. Here’s how you do it:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
  2. Scroll to and tap Settings.
  3. Scroll to ‘Personal,’ and then tap Back up & reset.
  4. Clear the Automatic restore check box.
  5. Under ‘Personal Data,’ tap Factory data reset.
  6. Tap Reset phone.
  7. If you have screen lock turned on, enter your PIN or password, and then tap Continue.
  8. Tap Erase everything to confirm.

I hope these procedures help.
