Qualcomm has announced the arrival of the Snapdragon 802 chipset for Televisions and Set Top Boxes. With Google TV failing to make an impact among the customers, we might get to see future iterations sporting this particular chip. So what’s exactly special about this chip? Well, while it’s not as powerful as a new gen smartphone SoC, the Snapdragon 802 will be capable of delivering Ultra HD 4K videos to your television. This is not an uncommon feature to have in a TV as Samsung has launched 4K TVs a few months ago in the market.
The chipset is a slightly advanced version of the Snapdragon 800 and it features the Adreno 330 GPU on board and four CPU cores clocked at 1.8 GHz. The chipset will also support Dolby Digital as well as DTS Surround Sound, so it is tailor made for your living room devices. The chipset is also capable of software tricks like splitting the display into two parts to play two separate videos, which is a great feature to have if you want to watch two videos at a time. Set-top boxes and televisions featuring the Snapdragon 802 will break cover later this year according to Qualcomm.
