The original Pebble smartwatch is a great little device since aside from offering notifications from a paired smartphone users can also install third party apps in it. One thing that it does not excel at though is in its design. This is about to change with the upcoming Pebble Steel that’s made with a stainless steel body and uses Corning Gorilla Glass to give it a premium look.
The Pebble Steel can run all of the apps designed for the original Pebble. It even uses the same e-paper display which consumes a little amount of power. Aside from the steel body and use of Gorilla Glass there is also an added RGB LED on the side which right now indicates the charging status. In the future, app developers may take advantage of this for other purposes.
Some of the key features of this device include
- 5-7 day battery life
- 5ATM waterproof
- Daylight readable display
- Tri-color LED
This new model is also able to work with iOS or Android devices. This allows consumers to view and manage notifications from their phones in the smartwatch. This is a handy feature since the phones will now hardly leave the pocket.
Consumers will be able to use this smartwatch while washing the dishes or even taking a quick run in the rain as it is waterproof.
It will also be supporting the Pebble App Store which is expected to go live at the end of this month. This is the place to get all of the smartwatch optimized apps. This app store will be available within the Pebble, iOS and Android systems.
There are two versions of the Pebble Steel that’s going to be sold. One is the Brushed Stainless Steel version while the other is the Black Matte version. Both versions come with two straps, leather and steel.
The device will cost $249 and will begin shipping out this January 28. Stocks are very limited and orders will be processed in the order that they are received.
