Google Launches Moto G Google Play Edition with Android Vanilla OS

Google today launched the Google Play version of the recently launched Motorola Moto G in a formal surprise that makes the device available on the Google Play Store.  Though the news came as a surprise, the specifications of the device are not different from those of the international version of the device.  In case you are not aware, Motorola is owned by Google and Moto G was developed under the full supervision of Google.  This is the reason the Google Play version of Motorola’s current flagship phone has been a surprise.

Google Play editions of popular high end smartphones are often defined by stock elements and minimalist software features.  The Moto G Play Edition has a number of non-stock features and elements stripped but the price is the same as the international version of the device at $179 for the 8GB version and $199 for the 16GB version.  As of now, just like with all other Google Play editions of smartphones, the Moto G Google Play is available in the US only and since Moto G is 3G only device, it works with T-Mobile and AT&T carriers.

The greatest benefit to picking the Google Play version of Moto G over other versions is that the device will receive updates sooner and since the device is devoid of bloatware, it runs smoother and allows for better customization than the standard Moto G.  The Android 4.4 KitKat updates for Moto G devices started rolling out last week, so the Play Edition version of Moto G comes with the latest version of Android, 4.4 KitKat.

Google did not point out why the Google Play edition of Moto G was necessary but experts view this move as a way to expand and retain a Google Play edition as a brand and as an alternative to consumers seeking popular devices with streamlined software.  This means that we are going to see more and more Google Play edition devices in the future – probably of mid-range and even budget devices as well.  For now, here is a recap of the features and software that were stripped from the standard Moto G to make Motorola Moto G Google Play Edition:

  • FM Radio
  • Motorola Assist
  • Motorola Boot Services
  • Motorola Camera
  • Moto Care/Help
  • Motorola Connect
  • Motorola Device ID
