It is being rumored since the past few weeks that LG is jumping onto the fingerprint scanner bandwagon with its new LG G3 smartphone which is set for an unveiling at the MWC in February 2014. A report from Digitimes now claims that LG as well as HTC could be looking to adopt a home button made of sapphire for the fingerprint scanners on the LG G3 and the HTC One 2 respectively. It is claimed that demand for the sapphire components is likely to increase in the coming months as more manufacturers look to implement the technology in their smartphones. It will be interesting to see if this will be an iPhone 5s like fingerprint scanner or the one similar to the HTC One Max, which was an abysmal failure.
Manufacturers will have to make sure they do their due diligence before venturing into an untapped concept like this one. Samsung reportedly backed out of using a fingerprint scanner on its future flagships for this very reason and has opted to go with an Iris scanner instead for the Galaxy S5.
