As rumors of the ASUS Padfone Mini increased in frequency, we were expecting an official unveiling soon. And right on cue, ASUS has just announced this smartphone+tablet hybrid with a relatively midrange hardware. Going against the conventional Padfone design, the ASUS Padfone Mini features a 4.3 inch smartphone which docks into the 7 inch tablet.
The tablet on the Padfone Mini packs a 7 inch 1280×800 display, while the display on the smartphone has a qHD resolution. The device also packs a quad core 1.4 GHz Snapdragon 400 chipset, an 8MP camera with the ASUS PixelMaster technology, 16GB of internal storage along with a microSD card slot and 1GB of RAM. The smartphone contains a 1,500 mAh battery while the tablet has a slightly bigger 2,200 mAh battery. The smartphone can be charged while docked into the tablet, which is certainly a neat touch.
The Padfone Mini combo runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with some customizations, so it’s not entirely stock Android. Availability is currently limited to China, Russia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Indonesia with no word on European or North American launch just yet. Pricing has been set at NT$ 11,990 which is a touch over $400.
