The much rumored mysterious Amazon smartphone was claimed to be shelved as per previous reports. But Taiwanese source Digitimes claims that the smartphone is indeed real and will break cover within the first half of 2014. Of course there’s no confirmation of this yet, but the rumor reportedly originates from industry sources, so there could be some weight in it. A company named Primax Electronics has reportedly received orders for smartphone camera modules from Amazon. These rumors are neither here nor there, so take it with a pinch of salt.
Amazon has been awfully quiet about its plans for the smartphone industry, but it shouldn’t take us by surprise if it tries to leverage the name it has made for itself in the tablet segment by launching a budget smartphone. But with a smartphone, the expectations will be slightly higher and Amazon will possibly have to cut down on profit margins to remain competitive, but it wouldn’t mind that as its ultimate goal would be to sell these smartphones in volumes. We hope these rumors come true and we get to see an Amazon branded smartphone by mid-2014.
