The Xiaomi Red Rice 2 will reportedly launch next month as the successor to the popular Red Rice smartphone. The Red Rice is a low cost Android handset which retailed for just $130 in China while the manufacturing alone cost about $85. The Red Rice 2 however will not be a low end device as it is reported to feature the MediaTek made eight core chipset which is said to bring true octa core capabilities to smartphones rather than the current 4+4 configuration seen on Samsung’s octa core chips. Apart from the powerful eight core CPU, the smartphone will also reportedly feature a 5.5 inch 720p display so as to keep the manufacturing costs to a bare minimum.
Although the Red Rice 2 will be substantially larger from its predecessor which sported a 4.7 inch 720p display, it goes without saying that the price difference will not be too much. The secret to Xiaomi’s immense popularity in China is its pricing and with the company’s plans to expand to global markets, we can only expect sales to go upwards from here. The manufacturer sold over 220,000 smartphones within just three minutes a couple of days ago on the national Single’s Day sales in China.
