Unofficial Android 4.4 KitKat ROM available for the Galaxy Nexus

Galaxy Nexus

Google dropped a bomb on loyal Galaxy Nexus users recently when it announced that there won’t be an Android 4.4 update for the smartphone. But thanks to the developer community, users don’t have to worry anymore as a new Android 4.4 ROM for the smartphone is now available for download, similar to the Nexus 4 build we saw leaking out yesterday. This comes from XDA user SlimKat and packs most of the features from the official ROM but with a few changes. However, its lack of AOSP support has severely hindered functionality. But as with any new ROM, it will take time to perfect, so use this ROM only if you’re using the Galaxy Nexus as a test device. This ROM is not compatible with the Verizon variant of the Galaxy Nexus which has almost received end of life status, thanks to the lack of support from the carrier.

While Google has completely written off the Galaxy Nexus from any future updates, it’s good to see the developer community still not giving up. We’re hoping to see many such custom ROMs making its way to the Android forums in the coming days.
