The Sony Xperia Z1 has been spotted in a never before seen Red variant, featuring all the markings of the latest Sony flagship. It’s a little odd though that a Red variant has surfaced out of nowhere, indicating that this could well be a limited edition variant specific to a particular market. This variant was spotted in Vietnam, which could mean that this new variant might make its way to neighboring Asian countries as well. The second bit of surprise coming from the leak is that the handset is seen running Android 4.4.2 while the Xperia Z1 runs Android 4.2.2, although an update to Android 4.4 is on the cards.
Android 4.4.2 has never been discussed in the public domain, with all talk of KitKat being limited to Android 4.4.1 which is an update Google rolled out shortly after the launch of Android 4.4. It’s rather surprising that Sony would have access to a new Android version while even Nexus devices don’t have it. So we are not ruling out foul play from the equation just yet. If this is the real deal, we can expect Sony to make things public in the coming weeks, possibly during the Xperia Z1S announcement.
Update: The source Secafe.vn has confirmed that this is indeed a fake picture posted only “for fun” using photoshop trickery. So there you have it folks, the Red Xperia Z1 doesn’t exist, nor does the Android 4.4.2 update, not for the time being at least.
