Samsung has just applied for a trademark at the USPTO for the name Samsung Sport. The trademark filing reveals that this could be a fitness accessory much like FitBit Force, Jawbone Up and Nike FuelBand with similar functions mentioned. It’s still early days, but from the looks of it, it seems like the Samsung Sport will be the next big thing in the wearables segment. Samsung was rumored to be working on plenty of wearables in the future and this could well be one of them.
The Samsung Sport is apparently capable of tracking a user’s footsteps, provide information on the calories burnt, monitor the heart rate etc, which is a prerequisite for fitness accessories these days. We’re guessing Samsung will have something unique with this accessory to make it stand out from the competition, as was the case with the Galaxy Gear smartwatch (which failed miserably).
Compatibility is going to be key, so it is hoped that Samsung doesn’t restrict the fitness band’s reach to fellow Samsung devices like it did with the Galaxy Gear. We should have this accessory launching next year, possibly during the CES event in January.
